Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Martin Brennand
Okay, just to keep you all entertained while I’m sketching up my concepts, here’s the basic premise behind my Grand Space Opera:
Lord Yukio, a noble of the the Nobutokane family, has started an interstellar war with the Capital Planet of Aziminoku, with plans to overthrow the benevolant ruler of the galaxy, Emperor Kane. Stealing the crystal that pulses at the heart of the galaxy, he has constructed a massive war titan that will turn the tide of the conflict to his favour.
Kiyoshi, an assasin in the employ of the lower houses of the Imperial government, has been given the fatal mission of bringing Lord Yukio down and stopping the titan from being unleashed on the universe. With the nebula crystal gone from the heart of the empire, the very fabric of space is in danger.
My scene will encapsulate the moment before Kiyoshi attacks Yukio.
This is an extremely rough sketch to try to pad down my idea. I may actually push out a 3d sketch instead, because my drawing skills are sub-par.
A mock up of the idea and camera shot. I’m planing on having a window scene out onto space, with perhaps a world below it… maye even a galactic cityscape, if I have time.
Well, I figured if you’re going to have some epic drama, why not go the whole hog and endanger the existence of the universe? 
I’m planning on having this nebulus crystal in shot, by the way. It’s only fair.
Predominantly I’m a low-poly modeller, so getting back to high-res is a dream… and a curse! This is a low poly start of the main protagonist, who will take up right of shot in the scene.
I stress that I’ll need as much assistance as possible to get my modelling looking right. I’ve been used to low-res topology for some time now!

I’m glad you like the idea. My concept sketches aren’t very good, so it’s hard to put across what I’m trying to achieve.
It’s very frustrating when you have this glorious vision in your head but can’t put it to paper!

You could just cheat and give them semi loose-fitting clothing. Save the anatomy study for an … anatomy study.
Personally I think a good costume is much more interesting than muscular definition. The creative possibilities are greater. Plus, in my experience, as long as it’s not hanging it’s easier to rig than muscle structure.
I know exactly how you feel… We could have T-shirts printed, with “sub-par draftsman” across the chest…
That aside, I agree somewhat with lord Sphere about anatomy studies - this might be a good chance to simply avoid muscle definitions, and instead focus on wicked intergalactic garments… unless of course that whole Fabio thing has etched itself permanently in your mind… then you would have to really walk the walk and actually add a torn white shirt over a very fit and oiled-in upper body physique 
On the topic of draftsmanship, if you feel it’s your achille’s heel then perhaps you would make more gains in the 2D category. Time spent is directly proportional to quality achieved. If you spend 60 hours on one sheet of paper/canvas/pixel spread, your result will look fantastic and your skills will be amply rewarded. 60 hours is only one hour a day for two months, after all.
Or you could try dedicating the first month towards your concept “sketch” and your second month towards everything else. Your chances of finishing may decrease, but so what?
As you may have guessed I’m a big proponent of traditional drawing skills. I think they’re worth the hard work & frustration involved in the learning process.
The main protagonist is wearing fairly tight fitting dark clothes, so I’ve got to have some body definition there. The other guy will be in robes, so that’s all he’ll be! Robes.
As to the 2d work, yes I agree that spending time in the 2d depatment would well be worth it, and I’m looking into it. It’s certainly true that a better concept of space and form comes out of having those skills.

I like your first concept sketch.Its mysterious. Dont forget the huge spaces in the background.

Blocking out the main hall for the scene. The main concept will be trying to blend futuristic space elements with Traditional japanese design. Still nutting that bit out.
