Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Martin Brennand
I like the idea of the whole unniverse in danger
Youāll have to finish it now, else eveything will be destroyed!
Iām glad you like the idea. My concept sketches arenāt very good, so itās hard to put across what Iām trying to achieve.
Itās very frustrating when you have this glorious vision in your head but canāt put it to paper!
Working on the arm. Limbs always cause me trouble, so Iām using a decent reference this time! Got this delightful arm reference from āLanceās Art Shackā :
http://decef.elf.stuba.sk/~pk21381/tutorials/body/anatomy/anatomy.html
Hi! it“s good to see again , I liked the idea, good luck!!! I hope that you finish!
You could just cheat and give them semi loose-fitting clothing. Save the anatomy study for an ⦠anatomy study.
Personally I think a good costume is much more interesting than muscular definition. The creative possibilities are greater. Plus, in my experience, as long as itās not hanging itās easier to rig than muscle structure.
I know exactly how you feel⦠We could have T-shirts printed, with āsub-par draftsmanā across the chestā¦
That aside, I agree somewhat with lord Sphere about anatomy studies - this might be a good chance to simply avoid muscle definitions, and instead focus on wicked intergalactic garments⦠unless of course that whole Fabio thing has etched itself permanently in your mind⦠then you would have to really walk the walk and actually add a torn white shirt over a very fit and oiled-in upper body physique
On the topic of draftsmanship, if you feel itās your achilleās heel then perhaps you would make more gains in the 2D category. Time spent is directly proportional to quality achieved. If you spend 60 hours on one sheet of paper/canvas/pixel spread, your result will look fantastic and your skills will be amply rewarded. 60 hours is only one hour a day for two months, after all.
Or you could try dedicating the first month towards your concept āsketchā and your second month towards everything else. Your chances of finishing may decrease, but so what?
As you may have guessed Iām a big proponent of traditional drawing skills. I think theyāre worth the hard work & frustration involved in the learning process.
The main protagonist is wearing fairly tight fitting dark clothes, so Iāve got to have some body definition there. The other guy will be in robes, so thatās all heāll be! Robes.
As to the 2d work, yes I agree that spending time in the 2d depatment would well be worth it, and Iām looking into it. Itās certainly true that a better concept of space and form comes out of having those skills.
Hi erilaz!
Your story is really well done, i liked it.
Keep going with the sketchs man.
Good luck for you!!

Hi Martin,
Considering you have only two months, you have ti push it hard.
Youre right considering that "Even the kickass prizes can't compare to the wealth of knowledge I pick up struggling through this challange" Its available for me too.
I like your first concept sketch. Its mysterious. Dont forget the huge spaces in the background.
Good luck and have inspiration!!!
Blocking out the main hall for the scene. The main concept will be trying to blend futuristic space elements with Traditional japanese design. Still nutting that bit out.
Cool design. You will have alot of interesting shadows to play with. Itāll be great to see the mix of Old Japanese and futuristic design.
Canāt wait to see what a ānebulus crystalā looks like.
Thanks zem. Yeah, the lighting in this is going to be a real pain!
I just saw Steam Boy last night, so Iām inspired to put lots of gears everywhere, but Iāll resist!
OK, Iām with you now about the thight fit dark clothes⦠A bit like the nihilists in āBig Lebowskiā right?
Maybe you could give them funny hats/helmets too (assuming youāve seen the movie in question of course) - keep whacking those polys :wip:
Thanks for your comments, I have reviewed your work, and as you posted the detail add so much life to the models, so they donāt see like paper pieces. You must think for this as if you were to create all this within a studio, and start to think as a designer. Put some pieces here and there, but search a background story for all the elements so that way you can make some more realistic touches to all your work.
Havenāt had much time, but still perservering. Just some work on the assasin today. Comments on topology appreciated.
erilaz - Iām not a 3d person, so I canāt offer much in the way of hints or tips - but I can offer support! I love your basic idea and think you are on the right track here. I canāt wait to see where you take it. Good luck and keep at it!!
