Latest Update: Concept Sketch: Another view of the Palace

Here is another concept I’ve done, mainly in order to have another angle on the palace, and to try to make it look a little more technological. In the end, I think that I’ll go for a mix between this one and the one from the first concept sketch. The angle of view will however be more like the one in the first concept sketch. You can also see how the city will be, almost built on the palace’s feet, so that it can protect it, and can slow down attackers. Of course, the buildings that are so close to the palace are military ones (barracks, headquarters,…).

Hi minna-san,

A little post just to drop a word to wish good luck to all the people entering the competition, and to say that I’m gonna start to really work on the project this week-end.
Hope to get a lot of feedback from the community, so that I can improve the little skill I have in 3D :).

Ganbate ne minna-san!

Best wishes to you french guy :bounce: I’m in hurry to see what you will do

Lemog…

Thanks Lemog, I hope I won’t deceive you…

So, a little update to explain the background of my universe:
The human civilisation has spreaded through space, and colonized a lot of planets. With such a huge Empire, the leaders of mankind can’t allow any human planet system to quarrel each others or to feel like becoming independant, they have already enough to do if they want to keep on increasing their realm. So, propaganda has been used in order to put in mankind’s mind that they are the race to rule the universe, and can’t share it with any other civilisation, as there would be a risk of being betrayed by the non-humans. Each time another life form is encountered, it is exterminated, and the planet where it was living is colonized.

That’s how mankind discovered the Klaeneks. Small humanoids, about half a man tall, with blue/greyish skin, no hair, yellow big eyes and with 3 horns on the back/top of their head. Their civilisation is based on science, and diplomacy. Their technology is based on short range teleportation, using laser pointers to determine the place they want to go to. Their lack of physical strength is compensated by exo-armor they wear when they have to travel, or to work.

Sensing the arrival of a human colonizing ship near one of their own colony, the Klaeneks prepared a warm welcome for their new guests, offering to share technologies and resources for the best interest of both civilisations. As humans weren’t expecting to encounter such a tech advanced civilisation, they first acted as if they were as peaceful as their hosts, but they didn’t forget to send a message to ask some reinforcement to wipe the Klaeneks off the planet.

In order to avoid losing soldiers, human leaders decided to launch a massive orbital attack on the planet. Almost half of the planet burnt down to ashes when the huge human battlecruisers started to fire on the planet. Klaeneks weren’t able to fight for their planet, as it was a pure science colony and lost a lot of scientists and civilians. This has been the beginning of the war between mankind and the Klaeneks. Klaeneks oriented their research and development on means that could allow them to win a war without having to kill their opponents. Each Human Planet System was given the choice wether to rally the Klaeneks or to face their destiny. Many systems joined the Klaeneks, and finally, Human leaders were driven back to their palace, on the makind central planet. And in the end, the arrogant human leaders lost, in the final assault leaded by Klaeneks, Rebel Humans and other races allied with the Klaeneks.

And mankind entered a new era, as a new ally of the Klaeneks growing empire.

So, for my scene, I’m still wondering if I’m going for the first attack of mankind on the Klaeneks colony (huge spaceships firing on a planet from which escape pods are desperately trying to flee, but shot down by small human interceptor ships) or for the last battle, with Klaeneks besieging the Human leader palace, fighting the praetorian guard in the city surrounding the huge building.

Gonna post the early concept sketch I’m working on atm.

Here is an early concept of the Siege scene I’m thinking of (the one of the end of the war). You can see a preliminary concept of the Klaeneks Exo-armor on the left. The middle part of the picture will be the ruins of the city with Klaeneks fighting against the remaining praetorian guards, and in the back, we’ll see the last human troops trying to keep the non-humans away from the palace’s walls. In the sky, we’ll see human ships chasing the Klaeneks ships marking the ground for their troops to teleport.
Let me know what you think of it, and if I should go for the first scene instead of this one.

in my opinion i’d choose the second idea: “the last battle, with Klaeneks besieging the Human leader palace” mainly because there could be alot of varied scenery, creatures and people running around in addition to spaceships. I guess both ideas could be visualized from the surface of the planet. The first could be visualized from space, but the second maybe not. If the second was seen from space, the pic would be mostly spaceships and the planet, unless if seen from the inside of one of the ships. And actually, i’m wandering if it’s allowed to have a pic that’s based on the surface of a planet, and not in space if it’s a “space opera”
anyway, sounds like you got a lot of neat ideas to pull from:)

Thanks oid for stopping by :bounce:

It’s fine to do a scene on the surface of a planet, as long as it still deals with the space opera theme (see the illustrations posted in the opening challenge thread, not all the pictures are taking place in space  ). Plus, we’ll still be able to see spaceships, even if I go for the second scene.

I do agree with you that if I choose scene 2 for my entry, I’ll be able to show a lot of variety in the action, but if I were to chose the first scene, I could do really huge spaceships, almost destroying half of a planet, which would also be really impressive IMHO. But I would lack soldiers, infantry fighting on the ground that can give a very epic impression…
Well, are there other people in here to tell me what they think ?

#8

Hey , Chug. I like the composition on the concept sketch. It gives depth to the image.

Keep it up!

#9

good sketch

all the best:thumbsup:

#10

Thats quite a storyline.I can see epic battle taking place for sure.very much within the theme. For me I would choose the second scenario…I think for this praticular challenge vessels and architecture are more the models of choice…But of course a few infantry nearer the foreground can still show more of what you have wanted.Adding to the vessel attacks…Ok,I hope the best for you.Best of luck, and have fun with your Space Opera…:arteest:

Cool robots around here ! We want to se more things !

#12

Hey guy, you really created a nice history!:applause:
You have a very good imagination. I Like it, when you use a “real” contest when and where the history happens we can really feel the final scene, and understand what is going on.
Good luck! I´ll be back lookng for updates!

#13

Virtuoso has a point there, the second story " I think is the most apropriate" for this competition…

Nice sketch and great story.

  • cheers!

#14

I vote for the second one :bounce: et maintenant, bon courage…

#15

Cool, another french artist !
Good luck to you !

#16

Anybody home? I was hoping to see more of this thread :frowning:

#17

I also like the composition of this scene, and am lookig forward to seeing the “tower of babel” looking super-structure and certainly the suits frame left.

#18

Sorry people, posting this really quickly just to ensure you that I’m still thinking of it, and trying to find some time to work efficiently. Next update to come in less than 3 days, with 3D modelling, and at least one more concept sketch :). Thanks for the interest you’re showing.

okay no prob. we’ll wait for it. clear concept there… hmmmm… it’ll be fun.

#20

Mmm can’t wait till tommorow  Nice so far, but more concepts, so we have something to critisize.
