Latest Update: Lighting: composition & lighting

trying to get my final scene and lighting scheme together.

i think my lighting approach will be very much along the same lines as a lot of my test renders. high-contrast, low-set sort of lighting.

the question is, can i possibly finish this in 48 hours?

#2

phew. well, i hope i have time for this.

got an idea brewing…

sketches, etc. to come.

PS - good luck to all the entrants.

PPS - but not too much.

aw, hell.

i just returned from my honeymoon and before i return to work tomorrow, i figured i’d put some time in on this.

…and then i see the warhammer cinematic on the front page.

that scenario, almost exactly, is what i wanted to depict in my entry. the whole “lone remaining soldier planting his flag against all odds” kind of thing. but now i’m not so sure i want to do that.

what do you guys think? can i still pursue my original idea or would it be better to go back to the drawing board?

#4

okay, i’ve abandoned my original concept for fear of being accused of unoriginality, but i’ve come up with something new and, i think, better.

the new concept will be a 40’s/50’s sci-fi theme. think of the old buck roders in the 25th century comic strips or the flash gordon serials of the 30’s. maybe a little mars attacks! thrown in there, too.

so. retro campy science fiction. should be fun.

sketches to come.

#5

initial sketches for the hero model.

#6

concept for enemy robot/vehicle.

#7

enemy sketches

#8

another enemy robot concept.

#9

heya, welcome to the challenge! Really enjoyed your MF entry, I’m sure you’ll rock this one too.

concept sketches look cool… very retro ;p

#10

Relly like those concepts, especially the two last ones.

Carl.

#11

(very) rough concept for the moon base (which will be being terrorized by evil martians, if all goes well).

#12

concept for martian saucer

#13

i’ve got more sketching to do, but i was excited be the prospect of modeling a flying saucer, so i took a crack at it.

#14

fleshed out the martian soldier a bit.

#15

Cool looking saucers, and I like the POV in your moonbase sketch. I’m enjoying your retro approach. After all these years, and the hype on UFOs, can you actually imagine traversing great distances in one or two seater? The big disintegrator gun is right on! Are you going to button-tuck those seats? Nice work. Looking forward to seeing this scene.

#16

thanks Versiden and mr_carl. this is a bit of a departure for me, so i hope it turns out.

going to take a crack at sketching the hero spaceship and maybe modeling one of the robots.

#17

thanks. i’m not sure what i’m going to do with the interior at this point, really. the composition i have in mind wouldn’t really have any of that stuff visible, i don’t think. but we’ll see.

i also have a martian foot soldier in mind that will carry a mini-disintegrator rifle around.

#18

nice sketches and overal style
are you planing on some kind of cartoon shader?

that martian surely looks like kiff croker - especialy from the pose and expression

#19

concept for hero ship.

#20

i’m going to try to keep the style a little cartoony and a little realistic. the shading and visual style i’m going for is something like this (mars attacks! cards). highly saturated colors and a sort of pulpy look.
