Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Greg Cole

#1

Greg Cole has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Looking forward to learning a lot during this competition. I have watched several of the challenges in the past, but never participated. I am a designer by trade, but use 3D software little in my every-day work. I am using Cinema 4D XL version 7, so I will have some modeling challenges

I’d love to hear your comments/critiques of my work!

Here are my first thumbnail sketches to try out different concepts/layouts. I like to begin by making very small test sketches that have little detail – these focus on the layout possibilities and help me visualize the different components that will make up a final shot.

This first concept involves a massive ring station that is drawing power from a sun/solar flares to create a concentrated energy beam. I like the idea of having the contrast between the top fiery/red-orange orb of the sun and the blue-green planet in the bottom – with additional action sequences taking place in between…

This next concept has contrasting characters fading in from the background withthe focus being a large ship coming out of a worm-hole/subspace and launching an attack on the planet in the upper corner. The layout possibilities are nice with a balance of action and characters…

The third sketch depicts a humanoid female behind a crumbling wall – hiding from a mech/alien craft that is hunting her. I like the thought of having an upward tilted lens to add depth and perspective. Another idea is to have the female character holding an infant…the sky above would contain additional elements to help build the story. I may add an alien ‘scout’ creature atop the mech looking across the horizon as well…

Final concept for now  This version shows a street-level battle between invading forces and a more humanoid race. The thought here is to have good depth with foreground elements like broken down building walls hiding secondary characters while the battle/action takes place in the mid-ground. A battle-scared cityscape would then be in the distance…perhaps some ships seen orbiting, etc.
