Latest Update: Final Image: Final

Discription:
It is 500,000AD and the world is a barren, desolate shithole as a result of the
stupidity of humans. Across the dry dusty plains of central Europe, the dead are about to rise, to die another death.
Unknown to the handful of humans still remaining on the planet, their earliest ancestors are about to awaken from a 7 million year gestation period. Those who were buried in the earth after a death of old age, after 3,000 years, slowly worked their way deep into the bowels of the planet where they started the slow process of a wonderous metamorphosis. Small are their number due to the constant shifting of tectonic plates and grave disturbances. The few who have made it this far are about to emerge to see the ‘New Earth’.
In a fit of fear the humans attack the fragile emerging giants in an attempt to protect their precious few life giving resources.

Well, here it is. My final image. Again, my appologies for lack of participation. I literally spent every spare moment I had working on this.
Anyway, I’m tired so it’s time to sleep.

Good luck to everyone!

Rough concept for my 3D entry. composition is not near final. I’ll spend more time with composition in 3D.

#3

what a unique idea, i only have one suggestion. i think the fragile giants, recently awoken from their millenial slumber, should really be wearing pants. i mean, honestly dan, who needs to see that.

looking really cool man, nice and original.

#4

Yeah dan, where’s his genitalia???

#5

No seriously mate, its a great idea, very different to the vastr majority of postings so far. I think a more dramatic perspective and more ‘canvas’ space to accentuate the wings, and the sheer scale of him would help…

but great start, and glad you decided to take the plunge and submit!

I should give a bit of a background here:

It is 500,000AD and the world is a barren, desolate shithole as a result of the
stupidity of humans. Violent winds blast across the dry plains of central Europe. The dead are about to rise to die another death.

It took me a while to settle on this idea. It was inspired by the cicada bug. They bury themselves deep into the ground and then come out after up to 17 years later. here’s some info on them:
http://inside.msj.edu/academics/faculty/kritskg/cicada/faq.html

can’t say it’s riveting stuff.

As long as thier sexless creatures as shown here I think modesty has been acheived. but who am I to tell him what he should and should not show?

Rock’n concept man! I did it, other than prehaps playing with the camera angle (to show scale and to be more dynamic in feel) and more scene elements to fill out the enviorment and to add to the scale of the creatures. I think your off to a great start!

good luck!

#8

I should point out that I’m a friend and colleague of Dan, in case anyone is wondering why I’m asking about the genitalia…

#9

Nice concept Dan, I like how different it is.

Maybe it would be cool if he/she was swatting one of those ships out of the air dramatically…although you might be trying to portray the ancients as harmless beings getting attacked by the stupid greedy humans, if so then forget what I said.

And I agree about the camera angle comment but as you said composition and the like wasn’t final so I guess this will be fixed when you start on the 3d stuff.

Interested to see how this evolves.

HAHA! you guys!

WeevilMan: Cheers man. I think even perhaps a dress could work. A short lacy number perhaps. And I like your suggestions regarding the wings.

Unitstudio: “Yeah dan, where’s his genitalia???”

4000 years after submergence the male giants eat their genitalia for the precious nutrients that are needed to survive for all those millions of years, oh, and to grow wings too  as for the females, we’re still researching.
I agree regarding your compostional suggestions. I’m very much looking forward to messing with camera angles in 3d. I have to admit I struggle in 2d.

“I should point out that I’m a friend and colleague of Dan, in case anyone is wondering why I’m asking about the genitalia…:)”

I work with you? where do you sit?

BookMansBlues: cheers for the comments. I agree, I really do need to spend some more time with the composition to increase the sense of scale etc. I’ll be messing with that in 3D. Yeah, I totally agree about filling out the background. thanks for that suggestion. I was thinking of placing heaps of the giants out across the plains falling back toward the horizon with hundreds of ships buzzing around in a way to suggest that humans have become as annoying as flies :).

#11

Cheers Zeldrik. yeah, i like that idea about swatting one of the ships. I really do need to work out ways to make the image more dynamic and ‘epic’ and smashing up a ship would really help.

#12

and like, it’d be cool if like, as the ship was getting swatted, all the debris and flame was making a hole in the creatures hand and burning it all up.

and stuff.

i like explosions.

(p.s i should point out that i’m a friend of dan’s work genitalia, in case anyone is wondering why I’m asking about the concept…)

#13

I think genitalia should be emphasized to create more an impression of scale! Imagine being in a ship swapped by a giant phallis

Dude, I think you got a cool idea going there; really really giant beings getting annoyed by pesky flysized ships…
I think you have to work on the composition and the creature’s poses though. A viewpoint looking up at them would make them bigger, maybe have one look down at the camera with a ship zipping past, about to be swapped. The bloke’s pose looks a bit too undramatic and symmetrical right now.

I should also point out that I was a workmate of Dan’s before he got so much on my nerves I had to change jobs

#14

heya wiro, Hahah, i just think you have a thing for huge genitalia.:curious:

yeah, my 2d really is crap hence the dodgy composition and pose. i don’t usually sketch out my ideas, i just work in 3d but given that i have found doing a 2d sketch has really helped with the evolution of my idea.

I’ll be applying a lot of what i learned from working with you when i render this piece.
oh yeah, did i mention i’ll be working with you again soon <----(entirely untrue, comment was designed to instill a sense of panic and dread.)

#15

Ok. I know I’m going to get ziltch for community participation. And I know how annoying it is when someone submits all their work at the last second, but… Fulltime work has kept me busy and drained so for me to submit anything is a big personal achievement…Anyway, enough excuses.
Here’s the model of the giants head. I really enjoy modeling heads so i have probably got more detail than will be seen in the final image. I went for a slightly exagerated look.

#16

Here are some rather rough textures for the giants head.

#17

Here’s the ship. Very qucik and dirty texturing  and I mean really quick and really dirty…

#18

Heres the lighting on the giant. I’ve learnt a whole lot doing this image. It’s the first time I’ve done a piece this complex. I kinda stuffed up with the lighting consistency between elements in the final image. But it helps a great deal rendering out each light as a seperate pass especially once they’re in photoshop.

#19

I grabbed the reference for the wing through google images.
