Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Artur Malczyk

GaNNEl: thanks for kind words! I hope not to let you down:thumbsup:

overcontrast: do you mean the exploding one? And do you think that those explosions aren’t too good? Because I can’t judge it by myself… thanks for the comment

soon more tests…

Hey Arturro,

Just saw your latest landscape image , this is looking great. The foreground terrain is very nice, although the most distant mountains could use some haze IMHO. Also the large planet on the right has some bright rings on the surface which I am assuming is some type of volcanic activity or something similar. This activity on the dark side of the planet seems a little too bright.
Great stuff all round.

Very nice sky this looks great i like the mood that gives, i agree with mmoir and overcontrast about the moon.

i like how this is going the composition is really great cant wait to see those vehicles inside great scene:thumbsup: .

#344

Hi there! thanks for your comment… yap, I’m working on some different settings with the fog, and lighting… ’
And with this moon… these rings should be explosions, I mean the sort of a shockwave, which is spreading not too fast and burning colonized moon… If I don’t get a result which is good enough I think I will resign from those explosions…

#345

thanks! I’ll try to do something about this moon and about the distance fog, to emphasize the feeling of long distance…
Tests with some vehicles soon… but I want to finish the background first

#346

Hm, haven’t peeked in your thread before (thank god for links in sigs) …

This looks really good. I like the kind of retro sci-fi feel in those buildings

Since you seem to be working on lights now, I’ll say what I see:

Overall, it looks very appealing, particularly on the foreground part where you’ve managed to attenuate the uneven ground in a nice way.

While looking at the distant mountains, it feels a little bit like a studio set rather than a big planet surface. You could probably make this go away by adding some more faint omnis around the entire scene to provide a stronger sense of global illumination (not technically GI here, but “global illumination” in a pre-CG era meaning). There is also some distant peaks that are very black, and those probably need some more light as well. Perhaps consider some very subtle distance fog or similar to get a sense of depth.

Finally, it might be worth trying to change the diffuse falloff for the planets/moons in the sky… just make the transition from day to night side more abrupt.

Very cool concept overall, and I’m looking forward to see how it develops.

#347

ok everything looks real cool i can tell!

now tell me please, are you trying to get close to reality on this one?
i mean… do you care about facts and such?

because if you do, you should check out some pictures which robots took from the marts surface, your planet is reminding me mars somehow, maybe if you look for reality it will give you a little help… there is the link… i found it on google…

http://www.arcetri.astro.it/irlab/Astro/mars/

good luck dude, i love it!

#348

thanks man! I’m really greatful for you comment. Very useful one! I will do more tests soon. Just wanted to ask about this exploding moon… I have mixed feelings about the effect…

#349

Yes, I want to get rather realality here… but you know, with the mood of science fiction a maybe a little bit of fantasy… It’s hard to reach… I’m not sure If I will reach it… It also strongly depends on the smoke and fire effects which I will make soon…

thanks for the link. Got some ideas from there:thumbsup:

Hi arturro. I have some advices for you. The texture its great, I think you achieve your goal, but about composition… I don’t know if this is your final camera, I thik not but anyway:
First, Those planets up there… it seems to me they are too close, may be if you show only a half or if you low the bump and the detail. Second: I rather an angle that show more those incredible buildings back there, maybe in a second plane or why not a firt plane. And finaly I think that background of stars, it is too dense, Let your image breath. Ok that’s all.

Thank your for your advices in my forum.

#351

I haven’t decided about the camera angle… but I like this one, even more than the previous one. My city is not very good… there are simple shapes only… And this angle helps me with many thinkg… like:

  1. It gives more focus to the first plan, which is the scene with kneeling troop
  2. It lets me to spread my air battle, not to cover the whole background with it
  3. It lets me ot show the space, which adds a nice mood
  4. It shows the scale of the scene, and generaly of the event more precisely
  5. I like it:) I will probably do some changes, but not big one…

thanks for other suggestions! they are very helpful. I will think of them when doing next tests, I appreciate your help:thumbsup:

#352

Hi there Arturro!

Wow! Now that’s a pretty ambitious project you’ve got there… quite the scope
I just have a few crits about your last pic…

there’s too much information in your sky imho, considering the amount of stuff that will be going on, I think it would serve the image better if you kept it a bit simpler… maybe just a moon and faded starfield, perhaps? Also you could add some clouds and fumes to give the idea of an atmosphere…

I also think that the colors on your buildings tend to blend too much with the surrounding landscape, maybe you could give them a color that would stand out more…

And that’s it! Pretty cool work on the ship and veichle designs… keep it up mate

#353

Great step forward arturro! Well done! Y
You have to change few things, but you are on good way to create something on a top level! I think that all the things that should be changed were mentioned… so I will just wait for the next tests…
Good luck mate:applause:

#354

And one more thing… In my opinion some small stones, and rocks would make the scene more realistic and would add something which would show the scale more precisely!
Man, you have to finish this on time, or I will find you and give you a big kick:twisted:

#355

Yes, it does look like a tabletop set. Although you seem
to have reduced the bumps with didtance, at some points
they just pop up again. Is there an atmosphere on this planet?
If so some haze would definitely be needed. Maybe the bumpy
surface of the distant mountains need to be hazed out or
smoothed off. Also some shadows seem to be too dark under
some buildings. They should all get lighter back by the buildings.
he sun seems to be low, so it would seem like some buildings
would cast longer shadows. A line of sentry buildings from the
front (Large) getting smaller as the go could help establish depth.
And the detail on that moon is to sharp and contrasty, of course
in art you make errors in order to make some mood, so it’s just
my opinions. But I’d change the colors, less redish brown in the
distance and as the ground plane recedes. The red wavelengths
from the didtant buildings and mountains get hazed out by the
more compacted blue wavelengths of the light we perceive which
are scattered down all along the distance and so have a cumulative
effect, so the distantce should look bluish. But if you want this
sunny red-yellow mood, try getting rid of the long distant foreground
which looks like a tabletop filled with sand, and just crop up to the village.
Well these are just my ideas, I’d have to post these experiments if I
were you, just to see what happens. Well, that’s why this is a wip.
Looks good otherwise. Interesting deseased ships! Full of “mites”!
You’re going to add fires? I’m looking for fire tutorials, please post
any links if you want. Thanks.

Rui_Padinha: thanks man, you made good points… I will try them:thumbsup:

graga: I’m happy that you like it… and yes, I plan to put some rocks there, thanks! I hope not to let you down, because I wouldn’t like to get a kick from you:bounce:

userBrian: I appreciate your comment very much! thanks for pointing out what you would change. I will try it tomorow, bacause now it’s 3 A.M and I have no power to work:)

#357

Aw shieet… thanks for pointing that out… [same timezone]… :scream: Time to sleep now what?

#358

well, it’s about time:) my bed is so tempting… and the pillow so soft… and all those ladies waiting for me in my dreams:twisted:

#359

Thanks arturro, for your great advice to my thread,
I will get drawing some textures tonight, and give some
hopefully realistic depth to my sceen too! I’ll be checking
yours, of course!

For the moment… it’s not easy to have a good impression of the scene scale, aloso for the distance… we don’t have any references actually…

Far details are very thin… like that, we don’t know if it’s really far or if it’s only little mountain… atmosphere at the end of the mountain must be better in a sort of hot fog…

The habitations don’t have enough contrast… you must maybe to change of material… of to modifie a little the color…

There’s too much nebulas or stars in the sky… with a space like that… hidden faces of the planet must be more enlightened I think…

Sincerely, I don’t like the texture of planet at right… the other are awesome, but this one… too special, too différent…

Also, I think that these planets are too near, they seem on the same plan… the most little was certainly far than the 2 other… but we don’t understand that…

These 3 planets seem too much centered in your framing… as if you want focus inevitabely on them… I think 2 on the screen will be better… and for what not a part of an another one cutting by the edge of the picture…

This is my first impressions… but yet, it’s already a great work… cause I know that’s not easy to build an environment like that…

I can’t wait to see that’s following, especially when you’ll add all your pretty vehicules…

Well, courage man…
