testing some stuff with the city again.
the final city will be a combination of this one and the block-city I posted earlier + some green, maybey some water; whatever it takes to be a dream-city.
Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Arthur Dam
looking cool, makes me wonder whats going to be in the middle
One crit, Im sure its preliminary, but your greeble buildings all have this stretched proportion to them, really leads the eyes to the center, which might be your aim, but doesn’t seem really realistic to have all the buildings like that.
yup the building are supposed to be all square but I was too lazy to make a big deal out of that.
anyway there will be a -huge- building in the centre with a beam that’s pointing to the sky or something like that.
anyway: I recon I’m done with sketching the city itself, now yust some sketches on the ships and background or w/e. After that it’s serious modelling time, ow yeah baby
Hi there.
Looking really great sofar with the ideas - although something nags at me a bit. I know you’re already peeved with the ‘merlin’ ship thingy from EVE, but your city sofar. I just cannot help I’ve seen one or more designs (not in this challenge sofar) that were virtually exactly the same as yours, and worse, to your idea of a tall building in the center. What I’ve NOT seen before though is somethin like this where the item in the center was organic and didn’t look like it belonged. Think giant tree style.
Following this one as well.

edit ok now I have seen it in this challenge. http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=4322
Looks like you’ve got someone to beat in ‘Awe factor’ now
You really are talented when it comes to find ideas, and how to turn them into pictures. And to those that are saying “it’s not original” or “oh, already seen it in that game”… Space Opera is a vast theme, but at the same time, it has very strict criteria you have to stick to if you want people to understand on the first look what is the scene they’re looking at.
And about the design of your ships, I’m sure that the design used by the EVE Online team is close to another already done before. It’s hard to come up with ideas NEVER done before, so, as long as you’re inventing your stuff, even if it reminds people of something else, it’s fine, go with it. Better to create a coherent universe (even looking like others) that YOU like, according to your personal tastes, than a totally original but not “appealing-to-you” one. I mean, create something that you visually like instead of forcing you to give birth to something no one has already seen (well, if what you visually like is something no one already saw, good job :).
P.S. Sorry for my english, obviously not my native language
Jo chug,
I was thinking about the same. Since someone else already said ‘a huge tall building has already been done’(eventhough it was submitted later than I my ideas were ) I’m still not stepping of it (mainly because it’s too general ;)). With stuff like spaceopera’s is nearly impossible to make something that is’nt done at all, since it’s so over-done. Eventhough I’ll cut out stuff that look too much like things that already exist (like the eve-online ship) I won’t cut out other because I would’nt have anything left then
anyway, thanks everyone for your comments, more cool stuff will be coming soon :buttrock:
and chug, don’t worry; your English is better than mine
Yeah, A really great job. And keep peace in your mind and do what you first thougth, because as I see the first ideas are the best, and more in your case. I love de first concept and the second is a natural continuation of it.
My eyes is on you!
i like very much the assault and other ships design…xmmm i have to subscribe on this one too!
That last concept is looking good. I like the camera view alot. Keep up the good work, I am gonna keep an eye on this.
okay seriously this is the last sketch of the city itself. The green stuff will all be made in while making the final scene, and right now I’m going to start with the ‘center-building’.
good point, I was already sorta thinking about making the final so random it’s more mazy than boring like right now. (probably by taking a map of Rotterdam and using it as a reference :p)
I think do build the city in round was a good idea… You could keep it and insert the center big building in…
Don’t think you need to overdo it, at least not from that perspective, a bit would help it though.
buddy nice designs… i liked the circuler-center-with-huge-building concept… i can only imagine how vast the scene gonna b. o by the way i know its just a concept skatch now but the squre building setup looks repeatitive… keep it up m watching ur progress
