Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Andrew Larking

Hi all.

I think I’m going to alter my idea quite a bit, I think it’s not a personal enough piece. I want it to have more meaning than just a space battle, I wanted it to be more heartfelt. I’m not sure if my new ideas will qaulify for the contest, but I think I should run with them anyway. Expect an update soon, just need to get rid of this flu and I’ll be back to it.

This current idea will live on another time.

Andrew.

OK.

My new ideas are:

A soldier returns home after a battle to save whatever planet he lives on, to find his home city/town or dwelling destroyed to the point where it is now a layer or dark grey dust and nothing more.

A soldier tying a ripped piece of the opposing force’s flag around his damaged leg, surrounded by fallen comrades and enemy soldiers.

A priest standing at the door of his church which is flaming from the roof and is covered in demon-like red aliens. He could be holding one by the neck??

A soldier standing on a shoddy, home-made cart which is loaded up with wounded comrades. The cart is being pulled by two of the demon-like aliens and the solider/priest is holding two guns to their heads to force them to move.

What ya think?

Andrew.

go with whatever you think will be the most interesting for you to make. Im only here to watch…you are tha master, whatever you do will be great.

Hi all.

Well, I’ve decided on the final idea and so started to make the priest. Here is a WIP of his head, about 40 mins of solid work so far. I know the mouth needs work, and his head is wonky, but that’s actually correct! I’ll sort the outh ASAP and get a full head up as soon as he’s done.

Best.

Andrew.

Here is s mall update. I hve cleaned the mesh more now, but for some reason cant upload the image to the host. I’ll try again in the morning. I’m going to try and get permission of to pos a pic of the real guy I’m basing this on, as some of the wonkyness will make sense then!!

#26

He does have a very priest like head… I think it is cool. Can you post the original / reference pic?

#27

Hey.

Yeah, but I have to ask the dude permission first. Hopefully it will be up later.

Andrew.

Hi all.

A Quick update for you all. Think he’s starting to look a little better now. Next is the body, I’ll do that untill some of you people give me some crit!! Is it that bad?

Andrew.

Hey man, it does have a nice overall shape…however, if you are going to animate this guy…topology around the mouth ma be an issue. Also, just being picky, the tear duct looks a little odd. Other than those issues, it’s looking nice!

The nose definately looks weird, the nostrils in particular. The tearduct may be a little deep, but it does give his face a nice particular look, esp. if he is going be be wrinkly. Since this isn’t an animation challenge, I wouldn’t worry about the face, or, if you are, you can always use the topolgybrush to fix it up.

good work so far, and keep the updates comming!

Your sketches look impressive to me, but I dont get the idea behind your main concept, could you please explain some more?

I’m curious

Hi.

Gavin, yeah, I have cleaned up the mouth a ton and am continuing to work on him. I think I ffixed the tear duct, just gotta get the mouth sorted now.

The main concept is a priest standing at the main entracne toa huge blacksh blue gothic cathedral draging a demon with its legs tied. There will be more going on though than that. The basic idea is that as a race, us humans got it wrong. Hell is above us, not heaven, and because we’ve spent so many years constantly sinning every day hell is full, and is now literally overflowing back onto the Earth, which is now running wild with demon creatures. Teh priest is a bit pieved as you can imagine, and so has taken matters into his own hands. It will hopefully be an iconic image, it is in my mind at least!

hi, i found a pic at similar angle, i cant find words to explain but maybe you will see something that helps? im only novice
hummmm well i dont know how to post a pic…for the angle the head shape needs widening the eyes further apart, the eyelid thicker, the bottom lip more curve, the jawline/back of head , thicker neck, the nose looks correct for the angle, theres parts of the ear looks eaten. but what do i know
nice to see it coming along

Hi all.

A quick update. My posts and plan seem all over the plce right now, but this will all become clear.

This is a troop transport ship. I sketch in 3D as I find is to be like sculpting, without the mess! In Silo I can model so fast I can almost compare it to sketching, but of course I can turn the model around. This is a troop landing/support craft. It is based upon an insect I found on a gate in the front garden, not sure what it is, couldn’t get a picture in time. All I know is it fits perfectly the thought in my mind, so I’m ran with it. The main man is still undergoing modelling changes, and I’m woring on his hair right now. I doubt I’ll be able to make the dealdine as work has gone crazy, but I’ll keep going just incase and if not, I’ll finish it for the hell of it.

Best.

Andrew.
