Grand Space Opera 3D Entry: Alan Baars

#11

Hello,

Your idea is great but I agree with lehmi that your structure is too big… I mean more graphically the earth looks too small… and in terms of logic too… its strange to build a such big structure if we have the technology to attach just few big reactors on its axes for example… but if I can devlopp your idea maybe that can be a super big space station… in this way that will be logical…
just my 2 cents  I`m always looking for logic in SF constructions :banghead:
Also your idea on the first sketch talks more to me…

Keep that good direction

Thanks for the crits. Probably will increase the size of the earth relative to the transport somewhat. Don’t like the idea of attaching anything to the earth that’s large enough to support a drive system, in this age, earth is a nature preserve, so no permanent structures.

So far today. Not sure about the inset shapes, I’ll take another look after work, maybe I’ll change them.
gotta go (me too!)
Al

No real time to work on this last few days, but have a block of time tonight to devote.

Here’s where I’m at so far. Lower right corner is a render test of an experiment using extruded 1point polys as windows (with glow). Like how this worked out so no I have a process to create the thousands of small windows.

#15

last posts of the day, two views of as far as I got tonight…

#16

another view…

#17

Great concept idea and i like your concept sketch

Modelling is processing really good great job:thumbsup:

keep it up and good luck

Wild idea, thinking out of the box…Cool concept, way out there, but thats why it’s cool Alan…I’ll be watching for further developements…Best of luck…:arteest:

Hadn’t had a lot of time to work on this during the week, hope to finish the transport tonight.
here’s where I’m at so far.

going to have to remove more windows looks a little too dense, more time later today…

p.s. carefull of the spiders in Wisconsin, got bit by one five weeks ago, doctor’s stumped. no spidey strength yet just lots of little bumps (ugh!).

#21

Yeah, definitely too many windows. I like very much the amount and placement of the windows from your concept sketch. I would stick to that. Maybe add a little bit more, but not too many.
good luck:thumbsup:
I’ll be back:twisted:

#22

removed a few windows, but still not there yet, I thought the look was worth posting though…

#23

Hi there Baars!
Nice model You have here, loads of polys and great detail, quite original

Starting the escort ships, wanted designs that would be simple, like the planet carrier, yet be visually interesting. Here’s the quick sketch of a heavy cruiser.

#26

Here’s a second ship concept, a carrier…

#27

Here’s where I’m at with the heavy cruiser, still a bit to go on this. Want to add a third smaller ship to fill out the cap ships, still working out the design sketch.

#28

Another view of the cruiser, probably won’t do to much more detail to the back of this, since this view won’t be visible in the still.

Thinking of doing an animation based on the still though (after the challenge) so I’ll finish the back later.

#29

think I’m done with this one unless anyone has crits of anything obvious I’ve missed.

starting the carrier…

thanks to all to those who’ve wrote in with crits and comments.

gotta run,
Al

so far not bad, though think this will get modified somewhat as it progresses.
