Great job on the costumes, really impressive. Just one crit on the swords, somehow
they seem a bit too… um big. But thats just a personal commentary, Im not really
a fan of manga style oversized-nes. Keep up the good work :]
Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Ronald Wimberly
Thanks for the compliment. and sure, you’re entitled to your oppinion
the white prince’s sword is big. It’s not big for bigness’ sake either. I’m not gonna spell it out. But everything I do is intentional.
I believe that I am more interested in an aesthetic that will be interesting, not one that follows any set of rules doggedly, especially not, realism… I mean, it is space opera… not a WWII illustration or a signing of the declaration of independance.
hi, nice ideas and concept sketches. I think sticking to your own aesthetic and style is crucial, and definitely a way to stand out from the crowd (many people will be doing variations on levels of realism or comic book style - including, alas, me
). Picking up the ‘opera’ as opera is something I’m also trying to do - overthetop tragic/melodramatic plots and costumes etc
I think the only danger is making sure it stays in touch with what is core science fiction. anyway, keep it up.
ok after seeing your entry, I feel like I should get into the influences in this picture.
the list short list: Architecture, Gaudi specifically a hotel for New York he sketched out but never built; Costumes, Felini-specifically Juliet…, eiko; Picture making, Felini, Hitchcock, Leutrec, Hiroshige.
and in terms of science fiction and it’s role in space opera… They’re not the same thing in my oppinion, but I DO get what you’re saying. And it does play a role in my story. I’m choosing to address it in the fantastic costumes, the robots, and the border framing the piece- which provides a symbolic setting of the picture.
I want to make a picture that communicates the ideas while also a piece of my character, and not just a homogenious space… er scape? spacescape??
you know what I mean.
PS. I admire you’re thorough delineation of your work process… tip top
Every line of every character within your concept work, has a story to tell. Your style is magnificiently narrative, and I would love to see a story/series including your visual style and character concepts. I love your work.
Though you have many dramatic sci-fi refrences within your last post, I believe that much more can be done with the “Grand” asapect of your piece. I think that you could make the canvas area larger, and have a intergalactic conflict ensuing all around the scene, to counteract the “local” conflict. This is just an observation/opinion of mine. Although, I do realize what you are saying about,“I want to make a picture that communicates the ideas while also a piece of my character, and not just a homogenious space… er scape? spacescape??” I am just making an observation based on the vast amount of competition within this challenge. Its all about visual communication…If you can pull off what you are saying (and I believe that you can), then that’s all that matters.
Overall, I love your style, and I cant wait to see what else you do with the artwork.
