Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Roger Adams

Blocked in the local color and established my light source. The light source it technically behind and to our left so they really should be more backlit.

I played around with several types of weapons the guard would be carrying. I tried to stay away from swords for obvious reasons. I tried batons and axes but decided on a spear instead. Also, I started putting down a grid to help with the storytelling. The heros are fleeing the last capital ship that is going up in smoke and the guard is determined to get revenge for his leaders.

Beautiful colors, and the clouds look great! Looking at your perspective guidelines, though, it doesn’t feel like the ship fits in with the perspective of the rest of the piece. I suspect that a simple back-view would work better in a shot with less extreme perspective going on. Anyhow, good luck with it!

Thanks Walrus, let me first say your entry looks amazing! You can tell you put in a lot of thought and work into it. Great job!

I know what you mean, the ship is kinda distracting. I wanted to make it look like it was banking to the side or on another trajectory but I’m not sure if it’s going to read that way. I’ve got my fingers crossed that the final piece will make sense

Added the capital ship that’s going to be in flames, multiple views of the ship the main characters are flying and changed the pose of the standing character.

Changed the capital ship and the poses of a characters.

I really have a lot of admiration for those that can paint to a photo or near-photo realistic style. One day I hope to reach that level. Until then here’s a closeup of the details of my piece.

I think this is it. I cropped a little of the image and darkened the edges to focus the eye a little more. I’ll sleep on it tonight and submit my final tomorrow.

Congratulations to everyone! This was a lot of fun and a great learning experience. Till next time…
