Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Robin Chyo

Great concept - like an interstellar battle of Briton

Gord MacDonald

#9

designed another spaceship. i guess this would be more of a mother ship kind of design. but then again, it’s not as chunky as standard mother ships. dah well!

#10

just a quick building design. i’m really not sure how i’m going to set this alien/culture’s environment out. still trying to decide. i’ll probably head out to union square tomorrow and see if something pops up!

#11

Here’s the real scan of the general perspective/composition that I’ll be using. It’s too earth-like right now, but I hope to be able to obtain a design for the environment that’ll set it apart from earthly buildings :stuck_out_tongue:

#12

Looks promissing
Your composition is falling to the left though. Maybe you should rotate the whole thing 10 degrees clockwise. But maybe it’s too early for crits… I dunno.

Good luck with the challenge

good perspective work, don’t forget the ground/ lower area (if it goes further down in space) I can’t wait to see this colored. maybe digitally painting in some values on the darker planes/sides of the buildings will help you firgure out the rest of the archtitecture and keep it from getting too confusing! good luck!

Thanks for the comments, peoples!

shadowstarre-i think i get what you’re saying, and i would follow through with your suggestion, but the initial sketch’s perspective was way off. the more refined sketch is more accurate as far as the perspective goes. Whether I decide on using precise straight lines is still up for debate. i’m just happy i’ve got the perspective going

element5 + gordonm- thanks!

Jason- haha. yeah, i’m still trying to figure out if i should have little people on the bottom of the image or if i should go with my original idea of having a kid waking up in his bed and witnessing the chaos. hmmmm!!! but godzilla belongs somewhere in the image :stuck_out_tongue:

jeroentje-thanks for pointing out the whole falling thing! i wouldn’t have been able to notice that myself!

Hillartsympho- i’ll be sure to work on the lower area. i’m still not sure what kind of colors i’ll be using, aside from the sky. i’m pretty much set on using a light blue violet/ yellow-orange gradient. it’s supposed to take place during sunrise :sunglasses:

–I was hoping I’d be able to stick with this concept/composition, but seeing how it was my first concept, I thought I’d try making some thumbnails in class on Monday morning. I came up with a thumbnail that I liked.

It features more characters than the concept I’ve shared so far. It’s in a crappy state right now, so I’ll try to post a non-crappy doodle sometime today once I get my homework done (:(). It’s 6am! Time to get some rest!–

Playing around with another concept. I was thinking I might try making a scene without any cityscapes :p. I’ll eventually put in two armies into this scene. One army on the left “island” and one on the right foreground “island”. Let me know which concept you guys think has more potential

#16

Right before I was going to go to bed, I thought of a new idea. Personally, my favorite so far. It’s supposed to be of a young man relaxing on top of some sort of super weapon. He’s just on top of the world. I guess there’s supposed to be some irony, as he’s laying back peacefully on top of something that is so chaotic and disruptful. Hope this isn’t too wide of an image :stuck_out_tongue:

#17

that last one’s hot. I dig the second concept too tho, the rock formations are well designed and composed… maybe a little of both?

smoochies.

Here’s another concept I came up with this afternoon. I’m really enjoying this one. It’s much more kinetic and animated than my previous concepts.I know the lower right hand corner is kind of empty, but I’m thinking about putting in a soldier there (head shot!)

#19

Taht last one is an awesome one… If u only could put something big with an enormous speed is closing to the main characters in front of the camera, this will be a real thrilling moment. And with all that cityscape in the background, the final pic could be grand.

#20

I agree to NinjASSN the last sketch looks very promising.

#21

I really liked following your concept art, you have alot of great pieces here! I’d say I like your latest work the best.

#22

You seem to have a great sence of making things big and important around the characters, I really like the angle of your last concept, KEEP THE IDEAS COMING

#23

A design for some soldier. I guess I’ll be sticking with the third concept scene, since I’ve received more positive feedback off of that one. Anyways, this design will probably be altered. I’ll try to come up with some more designs this week!

#24

Nice concepts man, realy like the grey concept. Impresive line brush, realy artistic. Keep the brush moving!

#25

Made another soldier concept. The hoses on his arms shoot out marble shaped grenades. The hoses are controllable via artificial muscle tissues and nerves (haha, I’mnot a doctor! I make stuff up sometimes) :stuck_out_tongue: I guess this guy can be considered a heavy armor soldier.

Do you guys think I should have these soldiers up against another alien race (actualy troopers) or should I pit them against another alien race’s fleet?

#26

Hey Robin, that last image looks great  Maybe instead of troopers or ships coming at the soldiers, you should have a giant robot or giant alien monster charging at them :scream: The soldiers could then be either in a battle ready stance or a wtf stance  Soldiers and ships would look good too… Up to you I guess

Nice sketches and great start!!!Indeed the last scene has a nice feeling of action and hugeness.
