Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Peter Schonefeld
Just playing with the idea of an advert for or scene at the Galaxy Fair, the futuristic version of the World Fair that was massive event and really popular at the turn of last century. Lots of scope for a bit of fun…don’t worry about the doom III monster look alike…he’ll go in the next concept.
I hope I can finish this one
Good luck for everyone’s entries…can’t wait to see all the great work!!
Nice idea to have a poster for the Galaxy Fair, the challenge will be in converying a real sense of scale and gravity with the poster. Good luck!
Thanks for the comments phillsmiff, and I agree so will go for a scene of the fair itself (panoramic perhaps? not sure of size limits).
Still want to design a poster, but will instead have it projected on a planet surface as a banner.
Here’s an updated concept of what i’m thinking…

still not so grand, but a start.
Please submit all images here.
Judges will be looking at CGNetworks pages to review your progress.
Thanks.
2nd rough concept, starting to think about the ‘grand’ scale of things and composition. Still a way to go, but it’s a start!
wow, talk about advertisment. Cool idea. Like the concept and the depth in the image. Good luck!
Another composition sketch. Have added some depth to the ground plane, hopefully increasing the scale of the scene. Each statue will depict a figure from the history of each century of civilisation. Giant trees feature at the base of the monument. The sign projected on the planet will be a subtle decorative design.
Thanks zem. Will refrain from including sponsorship by a well known food chain on the sign…although the planet will be a gas giant, so it might be appropriate
hi drawMonger[color=White], nice to see that you’re participating… your concepts are of great promise…
i’m looking forward to see your further work.
good luck

drawMonger,
I like that you’re drawing your idea from the past and modernizing it. Have you given any thought to the “conflict” part of the story? All those inventions, experiments, specimens could be the target of a galactic spy. Great composition in your last drawing – I like the line of glass domes very much!
SalamanderCoral, thanks for the kind words…this will be my first non-sketch, hopefully finished art work of this type, so hope to be able to do a reasonable job. Colour scares me, but will have to tackle that when the time comes.

Yes, I’ve been thinking about that. On the one hand, It would be nice to show a peaceful scene where the art and cultural achievements of a high civilisation would be enough to evoke the grand elements required. However, An attack from an alien race or King Kong like monster reeking havok have also come into my mind. For now, i’ll go with the first idea and if that turns out too static, I’ll add a little drama. Thanks for raising the issue
There will be lots of space and air craft flying around and sitting on the docking bays. This is a concept for a massive cruise ship.
The initial fair sketch (not the advertisment, but the high view of the fair) is my preferred! It looks very good, but even the second sketch has some potential…dunno where you will go whit those
Gio
i like your ideas so far. your sketches have a nice grand feeling and detail to them. i look forward to seeing more of your progress
drawmonger, I like the idea of the galaxy fair and the projection on the planet is a great idea!
I like your second drawing the most, maybe you could add some more domes/buildings/tents, where people would go into to see whatever may be showing at the fair like in the first drawing, I mean, if all those cristal domes are for statues (and it will look very good), then the only building where all the fair will be shown is the tower?
anyway, good luck!
