Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Luis Nuñez de Castro

#21

Veeery dinamic, its awesome. More ships maybe? Im just curious about the
white blobs in the lower corner ? Is it some sort of nebula ?

#22

Ganthu: The white blobs in all the concepts from first to that last are big explosions of the distant battle between the spacefleets. I have to do some nearby study of this explosions whom probably post here today.

#23

Great concepts, your work has a wonderful sense of motion!

#24

I dunno about this concept, I still pefer the earlier concept with the swirling ‘vortex’ like thingy, and the extending platform - that to me was a much more epic image.

#25

good color collection

#26

A (bad) study of the battle explosions. Done in photoshop and painter. I have to do another one cause it isn’t what I’m searching for.

#27

Same of the last one… I’m trying to paint it using nebula pics as reference.

#28

Here comes my first sketch reworked with photoshop and painter. I think that I’ll try some completely different idea 'cause this one don’t satisfy me.(Or maybe it’s so hard to do it in a realistic way)

#29

Odd, the one you’re least happy with is the one that I think is the most promising (the latest one… the remake of the first).

Just my $0.02, but I really like that idea.

#30

New idea, new story: A space elevator, which joins the planet surface with station in orbit, is being attacked by the enemy. Of course this is a first concept of that idea and still there’s absence of more spaceships, explosions, etc.

#31

Another sketch of the space elevator idea. In the next I’ll try to do something similar but in the dark side of the planet.

#32

Hi,
I don’t know how you will detail your sketches, but please ! keep this speed impression you draw so well !
Good luck

My space opera

#33

Hmm - the space elevator idea is pretty cool. I think it could be a very good piece, with loads of space fighting - huge buildings (the elevator)… very cool indeed.

I prefer the landscape orientation to the portrait myself, I feel it just works a lot better, especially as the action will be able to be seen better too.

It’ll be interesting to see this develop,

good luck.

#34

I think I must try to model the space station and some ships with 3D for use them as linework to paint over, 'cause painting them directly I can’t put enough detail of form.

#35

First ship design. Actually don’t likes me. I have to try with 3D!! But I’ll post some 2D design more.

#36

The ship is sketched in photoshop and detailed adding layers, then post into background image and worked a little with painter. Finally texture layer for finishing.

#37

Quicksketch done in painter and photoshop. This may be an alien ship for the scene of the space elevator or a planetground battle scene.

#38

You are flushing out some very interesting images. I like your approach - laying down alot of different scenarios in rough. Giving yourself a wide range of options to choose from. Keep up the good work!

Luis, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment on my page, thank you!

As for yours, I really admire you’re posting every sketch of the process, it’s very interesting to follow your flow of ideas. As some painting professors are a big candidate on ‘drawing with paint’ I feel it is very necessary sometimes to ‘write’ with the paint such as you are doing now I believe! however, I think it would be worth your while to put some more thought into the story through words. Start thinking about it in between work or something. I carry a mini sketchboon anywhere I go and for me, at the beginning of this challenge, it helped for me to write down the evolution of my story and the imagery I saw as it was coming to me. Developing a story will naturally lead to something you’re passionate about and imagery will just flow out of your mind.
You’re coming up with some good starter stories, but choose one and develop every aspect you can about it.

Black hole. Do some research into black holes, see what type of setting is around them. I think you need to have more stars in the idea. With black holes, everything in the vicinity is being suck into it, that woud, I think, gather millions of stars into this vortex which would give you some fantastic imagery opportunities. Something really beautiful that is actually a very powerful thing which is the backdrop for a big battle.

The elevator. Take into consideration that planets orbit and move in space. Unless a planet was orbiting at the exact same speed and direction as another, an elevator connected between the two would rip apart! But still see how you can develop this.

As for 3D, you’re more finished sketches show you have no need for 3D at all, you seem to have a grasp on rendering in 2D. If you have the same problem as I do, it’s just hard for me to focus too much on one sketch to get enough detail in there to describe what I’m doing. I need to finish it really quickly, I just want to get it done, and to put more time into detail is just frusterating for quick sketches. But, althought 3D is very useful, and it wouldn’t hurt to take advantage of it, I think that you might underestimate yourself!

Good luck, look forward to your process!
take care

oh yea, I read that you’re looking at nebula’s for referance, I am too.

I downloaded this document a while ago from a really great space artist, Greg Martin. It’s a pdf with great compilation of space images by hubble and other artists and links to their sites. It’s about a 14 page long article explaining his passion of space, the beauty and mystery in it, just different aspects hoping to encourage and inspire the reader. I would highly recommend reading it, it gives you a new perspective on things

here’s a link to the download, let me know if it doesn’t work and I’ll try to find some way to get it to you!
take care
