Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Leonardo Calvillo
I add some details but this is only a inicial idea, I’m working in the backgroud and the “ships”.
Opinions and critics are welcome.
hi, like your idea and designs - no criticisms really. looks like it might be very effective.
Ok, in the next weeks I’m going to work in this image and also in the last sketch.
That image is almost finished but I want to add something more and create a really Grand Space Opera.
Critics and opinions please.
I love almost everything about this new image, but I have a few issues:
a) It almost feels like a vector graphic, very 2D. It would be great if you could add some sense of dimension to it (maybe shift your camera so we’re looking up at these a bit instead of straight on from the side?).
b) I don’t have anything that gives me any sense of scale (foreground element). If you were to add a cityscape to the bottom. or better yet a some ships flying towards / between these alien objects (have one start close and the others off in the distance) that would really help to give these crafts / beings another reference point. Even an outcropping of land would help… just some foreground element that has something that we can relate to.
c) I think the 2d-ness of this image also comes from the similar palette, some slight tweaks to either the ship/alien colour or the space colour may help to separate and add depth. Fading out the intensity of the blacks on the ships in the MG / BG would help as well. Have the closest ship / alien have the most saturated colours.
regardless, love the design and the feel. can’t wait to see where it goes from here…
Thank you very much cgkrusty
. I’m agree with you according to the dimension, the sense of scale and the contrast.
Yes I’m going to add some ships flyring but first I need to work in the point a) and c).
Very good ideas.
Check back soon
Hi Leonardo,
I like your design and the shapes you created… the only critic I have about the machine is thats maybe its too empty inside the sphere... by adding something like a gas cloud youll maybe have a better interesting look here :curious: but it`s only my opinion…
Nice work
I`m looking forward to see more :bounce:
hey, i like the sense of refinement and the slight turned postion of the ones on teh right side. do you think you’ll do something like that with the two on the left? maybe turned ever so slightly off from the center, etc? it creates a good sense of variation.
Thank you Nomad and Hillartsympho for your opinions. I will add something inside the sphere (a gas, a small city, etc.) and also more spaceships in the background (probably with this change I can create a better sense of variation). Now I’m designing new ships for the image but these are only quickly sketchs. Sorry my eng…
Great artwork!
Simple yet effective:thumbsup:
But you should check out your monitor brightess. Some parts look bit dreamy, but in some areas black is burning thourgh the picture.
I personally prefer dreamy colors like in the middle.
Of course you could test out different kinds of contrast values for that final touch
This is extremely interesting for me as I enjoy deep sea creatures like jelly fish; and this one happens to look like one. It’s true that the ocean is very much like space so giving the relationship for a nice way to go. I enjoy the colors you have used an cannot wait to see the end result of you image!
Your post for Wednesday, 22 December 2004 has a very unique and original feel to it. The design of the organism feels so natural…like it actually exists somewhere in time and/or space…on another plane of existence…I really think that this should be the central portion of your image…but of course, i dont know your direction. I Just wanted to let you know that This particular portion of your idea has a very uncommon feel…very unique. You may want to pull out the color wheel and try some different color combos…split compliment, double split compliment…the monochromatic looks great…just imagine multicolor. Nice concept.
LaRoyce-
I’m trying to do something different. I add more spheres with a few changes, like color, from the rest.
Critics are welcome.
I like the additions . Almost feels like a bubbles.
I presume that your new set has blueish light? Is it quite finished yet?
If that will be the new direction i would like to disagree slightly. Overall red ambience would be the dominant factor in your picture. You could use colors with slight red in them. One idea would be that the inside of the jelly bubble would be blueish. That would work.
Dont bring the blue light outside the jelly bubble.
Good luck! Happy new year
I like the abstract shapes. My advice now would be to work on your rendering of the various objects in the scene, make them a bit more 3D. It also might be nice to add an element that the viewer can relate to, like a small spacecraft (like in your sketch), or something similiar. Be careful not to isolate the viewer too much.
Falcor thanks for your opinion, at this moment I’m working in the light, colors and also some shadows. I need to check different shades…
Blackarts thank you, yes I’m adding something in the blackgroud and front of the image, like the spacecratf and maybe with shadows and more details looks more 3D.
Sorry my english…
Quite good. Detailing and color scheme look great.
I agree with blackarts…there needs to be some point of reference to give the image scale. I think you could also create more depth between the elements by forcing some atmosphere (although there is none in space…) and by overlapping some more elements. The image looks a bit bidimensional.
Keep ‘em comin’
