Systematic Global Incubation Deconstruction. In lay terms, This is an illustration of a civilizations liberation from its home world. This race of beings (very similar to humans), has spent the last 500 years of their existence remanufacturing, and reengineering, every aspect of the planets natural and economic resources into a planet that can deconstruct (take apart itself) to move from place to place. As you can see in the illustration, some of the ships contain pieces which appear to be high rise office buildings…well, this is not far from the truth. In the process of breaking every element of the planet down into constructive pieces, the engineers and architects had to incorporate the surface buildings into the overall design of each part. Size wise, the larger ship in the upper central portion of the image, is roughly the size of The US and Australia combined…so you can get a very clear picture of the mass/size of the planet that has been deconstructed.
I started and finished this sketch today in about a 3 hour period (working off and on throughout the day). I am an art student but I have a part-time job working with kids before and after school…so I draw stuff for them mostly every day. They loved it…I hope that you all will like it as well.

Sounds and looks like an awesome idea mate, the potential to detail each ship and give it an unique attribute is definately there, rather that replicating several of the same ships you could explore the idea the each ship has a specific function whether its just a huge living quater for the mass population of the lifeform in question or, whether its their military ship, their entertainment ship, are they transporting animals from their home world, in order to protect not only themselves but the the other forms of life they they lived with, kinda like noahs ark, a zoo. I hope you get what im trying to explain, but in any case, great concpet, plenty of potential, i look forward to seeing what you come up with mate. Goodluck.

I have copied the right side to the left side. As you can see, the image already maintains a very operatic feel to it…very rhythmic. I chose this step only to show the epic grandeur of the piece. I will probably not keep the same ships on the left side as on the right side, as I will possibly utilize the compositional placement of the ships, to draw new ships which maintain balance with the right side.
I suppose it will all depend on how well I can simulate the lighting emanating from the residual of the atmosphere (which will be in the center vanishing point of image)…to determine whether or not I will keep the symmetry on both sides.

You are exactly on the same wavelength that I am on, with this concept. The three very large carriers on the top portion of the image are large magnets which carry the planet foundations through space(The huge boards). They also help to keep a dense, magnetic, spacial field, within all of the ships, to keep everyone instep with the other. Some of the longer ships on the bottom are oil/natural gas/fuel tankers, controlled by corporations whom have agreed to mine any and all necessary fuel needs throughout the civilization’s journeys. The high rises atop the tankers are the corporate headquarters of those ships. If you look toward the very bottom center of the image, you can see people witnessing this great event. Actually, The viewer (you) are inside of this huge observation dome viewing this event as well…so the final image may have the backs of people in a sort of stadium-like seating all the way up to you…the viewer. Yes…all of the ships have different functions and tasks.

This piece is very interesting to look at, but dont let it be an excuse to draw only half of the pic and call it finished and mirror it. I often mirror my stuff totally, but people will always sigh and moan about fully mirrored stuff… so heres what i might be adding
Main key in my mind would be non uniform lighting… maybe from right… and from center to avoid the lightning to look similar. That way it may rise on the prestige levels?
This looks like a mushroomcloud of machine parts. I wonder what the finished piece will look like. Good luck!
Don’t let a criticised technique stop you from using it to achieve the effect you want. Mirroring is a tool, like a pencil or a computer, some people still frown on the computer. If it works to your satisfaction, exploit the mirroring technique.
Also, I think you are working in a radically different way from many other people. Exploit it and your own strengths. I would like to see how this original thinking carries into your following processes. Maybe the pervasive “style” at CGnetworks is innapropriate for you. maybe someone like Miro, Picasso, or aboriginal artwork and African work will speek more directly to your vision… concerning light and color.

Indeed My style is and has always been very different from the norm. Over the years, I have had many great teachers, with much knowledge, but many of them seemed to frown on my style because it is not conventional. The other fact is that I am an African American, who has grown up in a very multicultural surrounding, so I not only draw upon my heritage, and my Christian beliefs, but also my vast understanding of abstract concepts and non-conventional methods of thinking.
I do welcome any and all comments and criticism, yet I don’t feel bad for mirrioring, as I am already, and always have been, a traditional artist. Digital is no exception to traditional principals, in that you must still have VISION to make something worth looking at.
Thanks -Falcor_-… I was indeed considering making the lighting versatile throughout the whole piece, as to make the piece non-symmetrical. Thanks for the direction.

oh man that’s freakin awesome! definitly got an iconic thing…maybe if we could see more of the planet…can’t wait to see some color and detail…imho you should make the canvas huge and get really nitty gritty about detail then your image would be something people would want to stare at for hours, and at the same time be able to step back and look at the whole thing and see it’s iconic value and power…just some thoughts…can’t wait for an update!
I love the idea and the symetry really helps drive the concept of deconstructing worlds. Great work, can’t wait to see the color!!
Sorry for the long wait, and lack of interaction with you all…last quarter was extremely busy at the art school that I attend. Throughout that time, I was producing, and I decided to redraw the ships on the left side, to add more structure to the entire visual. I have decided to keep the main larger ships, as they assist in the management of the gravitational pull between the entire fleet of ships.
I have decided to include a visual icon for the people’s persistence across galaxies and places unknown…sort of the essence of their fervor. Perseverance.
After rendering this concept for perseverance, I decided to position the people directly under her, within a sort of transportation ship, which is covered by a dome. I might create a few of these ships within the lower portion of the final composition but that will depend on the status of the image in its final stages.
This is the slow expulsion/disipation of the planet’s atmospheric components. This background will be placed behind the entire composition of ships, perseverance, and the people.
This is the full concept of Systematic Global Incubation deconstruction, without the detailed line art of the people. I am pleased with the composition and placement of objects…so far. The next step is the concept for the look of the people…then its on to color keys. Thereafter, the coloring process.
LaRoyce - Wow, this is a truly iconic, epic image! The coloring will really make or break it, but I think that this is going to look amazing once you have the colors in… if you have time to get them all done! …'Cause that’s a heck of a lot of ships to color! I like the mirroring effect here, it makes it more of an iconic image. As does the presence of Perseverance in the center. I have to confess that I wouldn’t have realized that Perseverance was a “she” if you hadn’t said something about it. The face could go either way but the shoulders are quite broad and the leg is somewhat muscular for a female. You’ve got to stay true to your own style, but D pi has some intriguing points about going more stylized with the figure. Anyhow, best of luck with it!

Thanks Walrus…I really appreciate your comments, and yes, I absolutely see what you mean with the figure of Perseverance. I was indeed looking to make her more on the side of a strong person, like LADY LIBERTY (always portrayed as being very strong and masculine), which is why the proportions are the way that they are. I am very glad that you brought attention to such things…as they are a part of my overall direction. Thanks for your help…once again, I love your piece.

I am trying to figure out what I want the suits on the people to look like. Even though you will only be able to see gestures of the people, I need a basic construct to draw from, so that I can work the gestures into the lower portion of the illustration (the mass of people in a transportation dome).
The civilization is in deep space and there is no natural sunlight to aid in the body’s natural maintenence and functions. The engineers and scientists of this race of people, created these suits which have built in muscle and nervous system stimulators. The red indication lines in my sketches, represent the places on the body that the stimulation technology works on. I am trying to decide on one of these particular designs so that I can create a male suit which cooresponds with the female…the overall design of the male suit will be virtually the same. If possible, I would like some help in deciding on the right design, or combination of designs to finalize this portion of my process…so please feel free to comment on which one you think works best.
