Well, I’m not sure that I’ve even posted before, but now I’m jumping in. I couldn’t resist with a theme like this. I’m torn though; I have two specific space operas that I’d like to use this challenge to develop, but I’m not sure which to go with.

The first isn’t really an opera in the Star Wars sense. It’s in space, but doesn’t have that ‘good vs. evil’ component. It’s more of a man vs. nature story, an interpretation of Swiss Family Robinson, actually. It is, however, clearer in my mind.
The second is much more of an opera, but the visuals are much less clear.

I was also thinking of doing an actual poster of one of the pieces, ala the original SW 1977 poster, but I’m not sure if that’s what they’re looking for. I’ve been doing a fair number of thumbnails, but can’t make up my mind.

When I get my courage up, I’ll post them and maybe you - the throbbing, CGTalk brain - can give me some pointers.

Later,

Well, while I’m not sure anyone will wander past my thread, I’ll post some stuff just in case. I can’t imagine someone finding me out of the huge number of other entries, but anyway…

I decided to go with my gut. The story behind this project is based on Swiss Family Robinson, by Johann Wyss. In my telling the story focusses on a small clan of an amphibious race as they are traveling to a new world. En route, their ship is attacked by pirates and the crew abandons ship, leaving the clan to fend for themselves. They are shipwrecked on a desert portion of a planet - an environment that is as dangerous to them as the pirates above.

Here is the species concept I did way back when - it’s not very good, but it’s the origin.

This is the rough concept for the piece. I’m still debating the style. I think that I’ll go with a movie poster look, but the artwork will be more or less the same.

Any comments or critiques are appreciated.

Interesting vantage point you’ve set up for the viewer. Looking forward to seeing more!

I added a character to the foreground and played with the background objects a little.

Ah, well I don’t know if I’ve figured out the system or not, but at least the images are on the thread. I’ve got another color WIP, but I don’t want to have to submit every image I want on the thread. I suppose since I just submitted it, it will be on the thread (and I won’t have to re-post it in this message).

Anyway, C&C is desired.

Hey all, whoever you may be. I’ve finally figured out how to hot-link from my URL. I wish that I could retract the stuff I’ve already submitted - especially since I’ve now changed my piece.

I decided that the image I had been working on wasn’t ‘iconic’ enough so I went with a different story and used an image that really spoke to me. It’s a little post-apocolyptic, but from the space opera that I’m working on.

Well, here is the line drawing I did. It’s pretty shaky, but I’m WAY out of practice with the tablet.

Here is the color WIP.

Funkbuttah - thanks for all your help. I like the crashed ship idea. Your hunter-tribe is a great cross-over.

balistic - thanks for taking the time to post. I’d love to get your feedback. You’re doing work that I aspire to do someday. The pirate and pumpkin are awesome. Thanks again.

Another interesting composition. The flag is a nice foreground anchor, and none of the elements are too centered. Good job. Maybe try to think about what your lightsource is going to be, and what color palette would best suit the mood you’re after. Sometimes I like to do a few thumbnails with radically different colors and lighting, just to get an idea of directions I can persue.

Thanks for the compliment by the way.
