Grand Space Opera 2D Entry: Fabian Hernandez

#21

Hi therecoCoKNIght ! First let me thank you for your comment of my entry colur raw concept is already submited:-)Now to your work.I like your civilian ship concept wery much. Why don’t you play little with it.Few examples:I thing that would be cool to make this ship burning and rushing towards wiever.Or change ship to bad guys version and turn it to more medusae form feasting on good guys planet/city/ships/anything you want.

Cool… The spherical structures could be made of many spheres inside all connected in stands and cool bright lights and the outer bubble is to keep the atmosphere in. This would make them bigger and the attackers smaller. just a thought…

#23

I did some googling and came up with the following:
earth diameter: 12800 km
height of the border where Troposphere und Stratosphere meet: 11 - 12km
My round flying house is supposed to have a diameter of 40m, so I made a setting in 3dsMAX with those numbers and came up with this picture. Blue is atmosphere which I want to make very cloudy / stormy. I hope it’s allowed to use a simple 3d scene for reference…

#24

I don’t see why it wouldn’t be allowed , it’s just a little help to
get things in proper perspective.
Kinda like using a photo of earth and moon as reference.

and well thought

#25

its considered your own loss if you do. i did, but with somethings like that, where you want to get the scale correct, its invaluable.
plenty of other people have already used 3d props for reference, its no big deal.

#26

Ok, now that that’s been clarified I can go back to work :scream:
Thanks for your quick responses!

#27

looking forward to updates my friend

#28

I like your new idea, very nice
maybe you could turn down a bit the diameter of the planet (it’s not the Earth but the planet of light after all) or increase the size of your houses, so that you can actually see the curvature of the planet, at the moment the horizon is flat (40m compared to 12800km…), it’s just an idea, it is ok as it is now
another thing… the bad guy’s spaceship will be black against a black background… I just wanted to point it to you so you are careful with that, it looks good in your previous sketch too
I like the idea of the stormy atmosphere and the organic-bubble-houses, and the way you have separated the image in “light VS dark”,“good VS evil”…

#29

@Mark: me too :wip:

@Fernando: Yeah, I’m not gonna stick to that render, it’s just a guide. You’re right I’ve got to be careful with those spaceships but even an entirely black one would be visible with such a starfield in the background. I think making the spaceships very dark has great dramatic possibilities/potential.

@all: thanks for your motivating replys. I don’t know when the next update will be because things are not optimal for me right now, but I’m doing my best.

#30

Hope everything is allright soon. Like your concept and wait for refined sketches.

Good Luck

Tom

#31

Oh, I’m perfectly fine, it’s just, I don’t have that much time and the pc at work sucks… But hey, it’s weekend :D…

#32

good to hear that!

#33

some interesting ideas. The light-beings could work really well, if done teh right way: coudl be like jelelyfish or squid glowing in water, or those seethrough fish in deep oceans…

#34

Wow, that’s been a while since my last update… sorry guys!

Well this is a concept for some sort of space monster, or rather troposphere/stratosphere monster, whatever. I had those beasts in mind for a long time now, but didn’t have time to draw it.

Right now the story’s going somewhere completely different: I decided that the story wasn’t space opera enough…

Well, my new idea is:
There’s a sick professor that collects all intelligent species of the universe. He takes one specimen of each gender and puts them each in some sort of ball which is not much bigger than themselves and which keeps them alive forever. Those balls are then placed on a very low orbit around a planet which the doctor keeps only for this purpose. The balls take their energy from the many lightnings of the outer atmosphere of the planet. And the space monsters clean the transparent hull of the balls so that the doctor can always watch his collection.
Well, it appears that the professor has localized a new race: the humans, and has opened a gataway to earth. Curious like the humans are they send an expedition through the gateway, but on the other side the professor’s luring with his ultra advanced spacecraft

I hope you can imagine more or less what I’ve described, else just wait for the next sketch

#35

I really like your idea of the balls being powered by atmospheric weather. The flying, cleaning creatures sounds reall neat too! I’d love to see a concept sketch of the underside of the creature (like, what kind of mouth it has and how it cleans).

Sounds like good stuff! Good luck

#36

it’s really interesting concept, but i fail to see any grandeur or ‘galacrtic civ climax’ on this one:shrug: with 70 days to go, i suppose spending some more time on the concept will pay off…

#37

YeeWu: Thank you and, I’ll see what I can do

giza-di: I’m not planing on winning the contest, especially not haveing people like you around here  but you’re right and I’m too not happy yet with the idea, and of course it’s also true that there’s much time left… we will see, at the end I’ll come up with something completely different. Anyway my goal is to finish this, to learn a lot and to have fun. (the only point I’m not sure to reach is the first one). Thanks for your input! I really apreciate it, and if you’re wondering why I don’t comment too much on your thread. I don’t wanna tell you what you already know: that your pictures are terrific…

#38

This is going somwhere… somewhere I like.

Real cool idea and storyconcept. I like the cleaning creature.
No real crits yet, because you still in a rough stage.
Waiting for more:thumbsup:

#39

So this is the very rough sketch… I hope I’ll come up with a REALLY good idea but until then I’ll just continue to have fun sketching and learning
Again, thank you all for your suport, I might have given up already

#40

refined the last sketch a little.
It really is not much epic, is it?
Well I guess then I’ll have to come up with a new concept
