Good PC configuration for Combustion?

#1

Hi there,

I’m not quite sure if anything like this has ever been posted before, I tried search but didn’t get the results I wanted. I’m kinda looking for some replies on what would be a good PC configuration. We’re expanding our filmcrew and projects, and therefore I’d like to upgrade my PC. I will mainly have to take care of the VFX. I’ve had Combustion for a while now, and it runs pretty good, but I dunno. I have 3ds max as well, something I will have to use from time to time as well, as well as Photoshop and probraly some AVID stuff for the editing. So I’m thinking off getting another HD and some extra memory.

512 mb ram
256 mb Nvidia GForce
200 gb HD
3GHZ Pentium 4

Need to know anything more, tell me… Got a budget at about 100-120 euro’s… 150 max…
Was thinking of having 512 mb ram extra and 160 GB HD (about 121 euro’s)… because I’m thinking of also taking a small 5.1 surround set (25 euro’s) to mix the sound…

Thanks in advance for the replies,

oh yeah, giving a link to some thread or internet page is good as well, a couple of replies are enough

And the effects won’t require too much memory I think, but I don’t know, we’ve done some larger projects, like doing Gollum, so …

What always amazes me is that people have thousands of dollars worth of software installed and are cutting down on their hardware, but still want performance…

For most apps that deal with video adding more ram will help in performance, also a lot of these apps work better if you have a workstation opengl graphic card installed, combustion uses this for the particle system for instance.

An extra harddrive will do nothing extra performance wise, unless you’re using it as an extra swapdrive.

Reading your P4 comment I guess you’re hardware is gonna show it’s age. With your budget there’s not a lot you can add to improve the performance i guess.

good luck though,

So maybe I should spend the money all on RAM you think? I could, then buy just some 40 or 80 gb along with it… but it’s a usefull reply, thanks

Well dude, right there you have listed over $10,000 worth of software and you can’t afford a couple of hundred backs for RAM and drives . . .

Combustion uses as much RAM as you have free to cache the playback of your frames, as I understand it. More RAM = more smooth playbacks for a start. I just stuck another gig in mine (2 gig now) and it really helped with the playback of my stuff.

Well thanks for the advice, wolf…

Yea, all that software is stuff I’ve bought over the last few years. I don’t buy all of the upgrades… Got an expensive vacation coming, gotta buy a new camera as well, and I don’t think I’ll need that much RAM and stuff because we don’t need VFX that rely on gigs and gigs on RAM, you know…
