Gnomon or Digital tutors?

#1

Evening ladies and gents, im enrolled for VFX diploma program in july and am going to be doing some extra prep work prior to my start date, iv been looking at the Digital tutors membership and had 72 hours of free access to everything and i really do like the way its laid out and how the lessons are planned and executed.

i just stumbled upon the link to Gnomons membership page which is a little extra per month (10 shillings) my question is have any of you done them both? i don’t see why any one would do both but hey you might be out there, or maybe explain what you liked about which ever you have taken lessons from?

Yup there are indeed those of us who do both, believe or not…heh.

To begin with, I’ve referenced DT’s over a number of years for mainly 3D modelling spec’d instruction, whether video and/or text/screencap format, to wit apart from, although not always the case generally, less favourable quality found via youtube, so yeah in my opinion, its fair to say Digital Tutors for the most part tends too resolve a sticky push-button workflow issue, primarily I find specifically helpful at times when applicable, rather than discipline oriented in depth technique/s per se commonly sought by most artists, so in effect user friendly tutorial library easily accessed, at an competitive price point, especially for those starting out or intermediate level.

On the other hand the Gnomon Workshop overall is aimed towards experienced/advanced users, hence not as specific in terms of guiding the viewer through instructor prompted que/teaching “hand-holding”, coupled on the whole typically assumes some familiarity with the app feature set functionality, therefore less tutorial runtime and on average [last I checked] more expensive to purchase, but TBH well worth the extra coin dropped, so easily in this instance - You Get What You Pay For.

Of course its entirely your call at the end of day which avenue proves a better fit, however that said, essentially since you’re prepping prior to course start, for the sake of “acquiring the basics” and/or “head start” in other words in regard to your CG area interest I’d recommend DT’s for the time being, remembering you could always reference Gnomon at a later date when time and circumstance permits.

Cheers

sacboi’s post is great and really accurate, I absolutely agree.

personally, I prefer Digital-Tutors, their tutorials are a lot more diverse and they also have, in my opinion, more interesting projects

DT in my opinion offers a huge range of tutorials and is best value for money.

Gnomon does tend to be more for advanced users but thats not to say you wouldn’t benefit from it.

But I have always felt that DT focuses mostly on the technical side in learning how to use the software and Gnomon is more artistic. Not to say DT isn’t, but the instructors on the Gnomon DVD’s primarily focus on using the software to create art more so than DT I think.

But I think both are very valuable resource for learning.

DT offers a whole lot of great stuff for getting up and running with specific software. I always think the stuff that actually gets made in the DT tutorials are a little but lame and uninspiring, but all the important stuff pretty much gets covered. They also point out little software quirks to take note of, which is especially helpful with Zbrush for example.

Gnomon is really much better for getting inspired but it’s not going to hold your hand in the same manner as DT.

I really do learn better by simply watching people work which is why I prefer Gnomon.
