GI rendertest

#1

Modo is my modeler, and when I was browsing the forum @ Luxology I saw a few users rendering the Ajax Head with different render apps.

http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=5028&page=5

So I downloaded the model and tried it in EI, to see how it compares. I didn’t spend much time on and got this image in 4 min 35 sec on a 2 Ghz G5 processor (single processor).

Nice…

Interesting to see that the Lightwave renders were coming in anywhere between 8.5 minutes a frame to 2.5 hours per frame…

hmmmm

We are however seeing just a lit side, not very photoacurate, so its hard to tell exactly how smooth the GI is when we arent realy seeing a whole lot of shadows or bounced light.
Are there any Images out there of EIAS rendering specific benchmark scenes?

#4

Very true.

Okay all you EIAS GI monkeys…I’d like to see some tests!

Hi Hans

Where is the download link ?

Here ya go,

I think there is another EI GI benchmark page but I can’t find the link…

The 1024x780-Frame took about 6 min with 4 Bounces on a 2.09 Ghz AMD 3000.

The problem with benchmarking between different render apps is that it is difficult to match them (Materials, Lighting etc). This case it was easier because there is only one object, one light and GI. I tried to use the same lighting as in the other apps.

One of the reasons why I chose EI many years ago was based on fact that I liked the speed and look of the renders, and seeing other renderers, I still like the camera look. For a little company like mine, EI is very efficient and I can get the ā€˜look’ I desire very easy, for the rest it’s all about budget and deadlines.

For EIAS users, benchmarking can be interesting when we want to buy new PC’s, or just rendernodes, to see which processor delivers the best price performance ratio. http://eias.groothuis.com

Thats what i was after, thanks, oh and here’s one i made earlier-

About 10 minutes render time (high quality)

Yeah great!
but - ehm - if we can trust silverbullet - there is obviously still at least one guy out there who needs (even with EIAS) up to 4 min rendertime more for that

Hmm, thats not too good then, the ā€œspeed testā€ was the same project as above, but modified by Matt Hoffman for really quick render times, although i prefere the quality of my setup :arteest: notice the area shadows…

OK, perhaps I was a bit ā€œto fastā€ with my answer.
I’ll try to prefer quality next time too.
