George Carlin turned down :(

#1

My first WIP of a 2d painting submitted for critiques because it got turned down for a place in the Gallery. I am hoping to understand why so I can get one in there. I would welcome any and all honest feed back. I cried all night when it was turned down.

It’s a good portrait, very recognizeable. His emotional level is slightly more intense (better) in the drawing than in the original photograph, though I doubt it was intentional, I like that. I suspect it was declined due to lack of originality in the subject matter – not only is it a portrait (which in the digital art world is bland) but it’s a direct copy from a photograph. I think also according to the terms, you are not allowed to copy photographs without giving credit to the original.

Stuh505, Thanks for the feed back. It could be that it is from a photo. George was not available for a sitting. I am not sure who took the photo but this is the one I was using as reference.

In addition to what stuh505 said, it also looks like something that would be considered a “study” or a sketch for a finished work. The background is too uniform and the overall work is too simplified to be considered a stand a lone work. If you are going to do a portrait I would suggest you say something with that portrait. For example take a look at Quadart’s sketchbook here. He has an Alfred Hitchcock portrait he has been working on in that thread that is a good example of what I mean.

P.S. chin up, you’ll get there. Just keep moving forward.

mybutterflyiris First I am honored to have you crit this painting. Secondly, I see the quality of work that is excepted and strive to show what I can do. This is my 2nd painting with photoshop and felt it was my best as far as the elements I was going for. You point is well taken if I understand it. I should add some element that helps the image emphasize something about the subject. Something that would make it more interesting and perhaps, stand out.

In next painting I will keep that in mind as a thinking about the layout. I am not at all discouraged more enlightened. Thank you.
