Garage - What I'm missing here ???

#1

Ok,
I got a problem with my scene. Here is my latest render:

If you’ll notice, the building is smooth. But I have textures and bump maps on them. The same goes to the fawcettes. Here are the two shaders that I am using:

The wall:

And the fawcettes:

I checked the model’s normals. They are all good. Checked render stats - looks good to me. So why when I render the entire image I get smooth walls with no textures and bumps on them ? The render itself was with mental ray, but also a different render with photons & FG didn’t get/showed any details on the walls.

Any idea ? ? ?

do the shaders render when you make a simple sphere and render it?
Also it could possibly be a high frequency noise that is smoothing out due to lack of samples in the render…
I would say try a simple sphere and see if it does show up…
Oh and I forgot, prolly the uvs are all at 0,0 so try automatic mapping and see if the patterns show up…

Yaayy… :bounce:

Automatic mapping have saved the day!

Thanks darktding. But the funny thing is that the file give an error when trying to reach the UV editor. Deleted my Maya user profile, restarted maya and still get error when trying to open the UV editor.

  The alert is:

   Error: Object not found: polyTexturePlacementPanel1
  wierd.

You have to decide if you want to apply the texture as a projection, or else use a normal texture based on the UVs. For a project like this, I’d probably try to skip the UVs and use mostly projections, but that’s just my preference. Putting some UVs on the surfaces will help if you do baking later though (we’re going to talk about baking.)

I had the same issue with the UV editor. Same error message, and the editor showed up blank. After two weeks of trying to texture it all procedurally, I figured out a fix.

Just import the geo, etc. into a brand new scene file. It took me a few tries on a few past different scene versions, but rather quickly I got a scene file with the UV editor working. Something just got corrupted along the way I guess.

Hope the trick works for you…

That’s interesting. I tend to avoid the UV editor and just use a lot of projections myself, but yes, starting a new scene and just importing what you need is generally a good way to fix most bugs or corruption that can creep into Maya scenes.
