GameArtMiniComp#2:GatetoaTomb(blankslatejoe)

Hey everyone, it’s about time I popped in here on these boards again… I love the idea of the mini challenge, it’s a perfect way to hone down on some tricky skill issues you don’t have time to address on a bigger project…

Here’s my entry thus far, after coupla hours of modeling: 600tris on the dot.

I’m aiming at something to be viewed at a distance/angle similar to the 3d Castlevania that came out for PS2… a VERY pretty game with lotsa gateways to think about.

I’m not going for that style, just that level of detail… maybe…

Anyway, comments/crits welcome!

i like the geometry, ho it looks textured?
i wanna see how you texture the great stone!

come on!

Gadric

#3

Thanks gadric… sighhhh, at least I know now why there aren’t more games with this curvey-style stuff… it’s a PAIN to unwrap… It least it’s done!

Yeah… there’s SOME stretching… but hopefully it won’t be too noticable in the end…

Oh, apparently, I’m only at 530 ish polys too… I didn’t realize I had a -hidden- first attempt at the doors to delete.

#4

use a gray texture to show your model better because now i can not see your model good.

#5

Wow nice UV job - that must have been a challenge. I like where this is going, but it is hard to tell what exactly is going on - Is this all carved in stone?

#6

massoud: I use the checkerboard to check early for stretching, since it takes about 2 seconds to make the checker, and unwrapping is a teeediious process… made even more tedious if you start painting before you’ve gotten the stretching somewhat undercontrol…
I’m assuming you meant you weren’t digging the checkers…

Metronaut: Took longer than I wanted to… I’ll admit that one! But, I’m much slower at the second half of this whole process… modeling; 3 hours… texturing;3days…

I’ll post more goodies tommorrow!

well, I’ve finished up this little guy… It’s been awhile since I’ve done anything non character… Comments and crits welcome, of course, but I’m crossing my fingers that no one calls “…1 bit alpha…” on me…

And without the pretty micky-mouse-fog and texture filtering:

I think my for next skin for this thing I’ll work in a bit more established, strong painted in lighting… I’m really keen on trying out something drastic lighting-wise…

#8

wow, so cool, i like the colors and this alpha too, great gate
texture is a bit blured, but this is because of the little texture

best regards,
Gadric

i really like the mist / fog…it makes it look eery…maybe you might look at making your gate texture (the purple) more stylised like that also…it would look fantastic…

i’m thinking more Tim Burton than Disney…but keep it up…

thanks guys for the feedback,
Defaulthuman - Man, I know exactly what you’re talking about… I was trying my best to give it that consistent style a bit moreso. TimBurton-y is closer to what I want than Disney… but I couldn’t think of a better way to describe the smoke at the time… I might go back and push the style more in a few days.

Gadric - Yeah, it IS a bit blurry… I didn’t repeat NEARLY as much as some of the other guys doing this challenge have been. There still is a heavy amount of repetition though, but it’s still mighty blurry…

I’ve been barrelling through this, and have already made the second skin that I wanted to do.

The first one was made for some kinda ingame lighting, but I figured since the light source is well established in this second one, I could try my hand at REALLY painting in strong lighting, which is lotsa fun.

Here’s the finished project for now.
Texture Sheets:

Skin Number1: Unlit and eerie:

Skin Number2: Lit/Activated:

good idea with the light box…very nice…really gives it some pop

i’m sure you could do it with vertex paints though…saving on your textures…

#12

hrmmm you’re right… I bet It WOULD work out that way… If I have time to get back on this guy I might just fix that up a bit…

Thanks for the compliments!

#13

wow, this gate is really nice. i like the style alot.

some flowers or plants on the base would be great and i would give the light coming out a colour - white is boring
maybe some more colourvariation would be good so not all parts look the same.

#14

yeah…i think that too, looking at it now…surely the light should be purpleish because it’s bouncing off of purple walls…

then again, the whole think will be purple then…so i’m not sure…

#15

huh,… good point guys… maybe a pink would work, or at least a richer yellow-to-white fade…

I’m glad this thing isn’t over till early oct, it may be a week or so till I can come back to it.

Thanks for the crits and compliments!
