Game Character Topology

#1

Hi guys…Right now I am doing a low poly game character in my spare time…
This is the High Poly

and this is the retopo progress so far

This is the first low poly game character for me and I feel a bit of confusion when it comes to the topology part…triangles or quad?If i look at naughty dog or blizzard wireframe i see a lot of triangles and i’ve read that using triangles is good to mantain silhouette too but I am a bit scared because i do not fully understand where to place them…

So I need sone good Critiques to help me figure out a game engine ready low poly topology

waiting for your critiques guys!

Quads

And once in a while you’ll need to have vertices that are more than 4 edges converging together…you can do 5 but avoid 6 edged vertices.

Hi BlackL0tus,
Nice character!

For game characters, generally speaking quads are good to mantain a clean topology while triangles give you a finer controll on how exactly the shape of your object or character should look like.
So you should use only quads as long as you’re dealing with flat and smooth surfaces and you can put some triangles where the shape needs more details.

On the face, try to follow the reference that AncienRegime provided: The important things is that you have those clean circular loops around the mouth and the eyes which are very important for animation. In other areas of the face you can pretty much do whatever you want since they don’t need to be deformed so much.

In the shirt area it looks like you’re using triangles just fine

Hey Guys! Thanks a lot for the critiques, i really appreciate it!
As a High Poly modeler i have not so many problems when it comes to dealing with quads…I have confusion when it comes to think about low poly characters and deformations with triangles…i modeled the head like this because I planned no face deformation on my character but As a portfolio piece Right now I am thinking about reshaping the topology.

What about the triangles in the shirt?JacopoS do you think it’ll be good with deformation?I would love to rig it and put in a different pose for the turntable

I think you’ll be good with those triangles on the shirt.
You might want to take a look at this tutorial series by Hai Phan. I found that very helpful. He covers all the process of how to make a game character (the link I provided is only about low-poly topology but there’s a lot more).
By the way, I took a look at some of your works: very impressive stuff!

That is an excellent series. He also gets into rigging that character too.

Hi guys…sorry for all this time but i just couldn’t find a free spot to show you my character…i call this done because i need to move forward

Cool! It’s Wally from Monkey Island right? :stuck_out_tongue:
