it’s not bad, but it’s strikingly similar to this guy’s work:

http://xcloud.net/

Agreed. Actually when I saw the thumbnail I thought it was another character from the same guy… so that’s a compliment. I just wish you woulda changed him up a lil more or said it was inspired by the work on xcloud.net. I have know problems with the model though, there’s even a tutorial of the guy. If you plan on still working him, I’d dirty up the textures just a lil bit. It seems like you’re going for a more clean look, but it looks a bit too clean… specifially the boots, pants, and hip armor.

Overall… good work

#4

Yep… totally reminds me of xcloud’s work.

Lovely work otherwise.

#5

looks quite familiar as been said already, but in the same place - very good
congratz

I thought imitation was the greatest form of flatery. I think everyone browsing on cgtalk take ideas from one an other like this. How many times did i post something and someone ported my idea in his folio.

Its not too bad actually good looking, you kept it close to the original, i may do my own.

Sorry, but I could not disagree more. If I spent a month concepting, modeling, texturing, rigging, posing and rendering out an image for critique on a good forum such as this one, the last thing I want on my mind is people lifting my design and plopping it into their ‘folio’. Wow, I just worked for free so someone could profit from it.

In this case, if there was a tutorial for this particular piece, then credit to the maker of the tutorial should be given, at the very least.

Some people need to remind themselves how good imagery sticks in a persons mind. Having participated in the hiring for new recruits at the last company I worked at, (I’m an ‘artist’ btw,) one sees how someone whose full time job sorting through masses of imagery on the web and demo reels will see rip-off’s.

This has been flogged to death in other threads, but does one really want to have other peoples work in their folio come time to show it? Even if the original isn’t copied completely, should the reviewer be familiar with the original and no credit is given, the artist comes off in poor light to say the least.

Some people will get away with it. Heck, some devious peeps actually get away with ripping off co-workers ideas etc. But does that mean this should continue? No.

There is a huge difference between inspiration and outright pillage. With imagery so easily ripped, it prevents artists from posting some of their best stuff, and our community is poorer through this.

K, rant’s done.

Thank all replys!
First I’ll say I was follow the art style of Seong-wha Jeong form “xcloud.net”,I’ve study his tutorial too.I love his design and art style,so I decided to created a chinese style one. I study the tutorial,Then I Draw my concept,Modeled and textured myself,I didn’t copy and paste his texture, and I didn’t clone his wires,I don’t think this is a shame thing. And I think this is why he posted his tutorial.
The thing is just like if we see a very cool Game character, like FFXI or something, and we like it very much,Then we created a model similer it and posted here.
Sorry for my bad english,
And Thanx Seong-wha Jeong.

To wonder: great work so far, in some way you could make something totaly different and keep it original to you. You have the talent. Trust me

EnginesofCreation: your point is correct, however i was not stating that anything of this was good or bad, simply that its being “done” in some way or an other.

its taken from a tutorial also.

Indeed not bad and very similar to xcloud.net .
What your character lacks is expression… So you could work on this a little.

#11

seems really good low poly

#12

Great modelling and texturing man.

#13

pretty cool man, nice work.

#14

Technically really nice work… however it is a bit too similar in design to xcloud.net

Hi there,

First I would like to congratulate you Wonder for your fantastic piece of art and for sharing it with us.

Please take no offense to that but some people comments would have ruined my mind as an artist if that was my work (not only in this thread).
Let me explain, for sure I’m totally aware that this work is similar in many areas to Seong-wha Jeong works ( http://xcloud.net/ ).

According to my taste when I discovered Seong-wha Jeong works I tought that it looked similar in some ways to that of Benoit Regimbal Cote : http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/cottages/b1ll/
There was also a feeling of final fantasy and a little bit of Magna carta

What I would like to point is that sometime some people have the same vision of art in their mind. I’m almost sure that Wonder has taken a direction in his cgart style now and to the sight of his skills I hope he will make his own art very soon and very different from Seong-wha’s.

Can we really argue about the limit between inspiring and copying ? With tweaking of his Chinesegeneral you could easily do a Tom Clancy’s character for example. So where are the limits and why sould we have to limit ourselve in a way or another ? To me art is a brillant thing because it connect people in many ways. I have my eyes on cgtalk for 5 years now and I’ve always been pleased with the honesty and availaibility f all the users down here. Please everyone remember that “You are responsible for your own words and any harm they may cause.”
I would like to precise that english is not my language and that I do not want to look angry to all of you. I just want the best to this exceptional community.

By the way Wonder are you okay sharing some wire shot with us ?

Thanks a lot.

zerofil -

the problem isn’t that he was inspired by Seong-wha Jeong, but that he borrowed heavily from the sword master character without crediting the original artist. Yes, everyone has inspirations, but there’s a big difference between being inspired and copying. now, he’s said that he was doing the tutorial, which there is nothing wrong with, but it should have been mentioned in his first post.

This is my worst post in CGtalk.
Thanx, skrubbles,I think may be it’s really a bit too clean,At first im going to do a kind of sryly without “dirty texture”,But now i think I may need add some dirty colour to it,May be add some dark red and green to the boot .
zerofil,Thank you!Here’s my wire:

I really dont want argue on this is a inspired or a copying. For me,This is not a piece which can earn money or something. But I really feel I was improved alot though this work, and I finally found a style worth me walk down. Thank zerofil and peanut again,My next one will be totally different.

With everything said, I think that the artist intentions were honest. Looking at the work itself, it was done nicely, and I cant deny talent. Dont feel bad, take it as lesson learned and move on and do greater. PEACE OUT!!!

I forgot to mention the fact its a amazing model and very well textured! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
