does anyone know of any sites where i can get some decent fur and clothes textures and refence pics?
Game Art Comp 9: Bulldog: British Sergeant(1808-1813)
very good job.
Is good to see how the help of others could do alot of defference, mate very good job.
On the next comp i’ll need some good advise 2.
thanks dacheese and aryes.
ok, i’ve uv mapped his body now (i’m gonna do 1 for the body and 1 for the accessories and weapons) this is my first real attempt and texturing something so any advice and crits would be great.
here’s the start of my texturing! i know the creases on the torso look crap at the mo but i’m still experimenting.

Good start considering its your first real attempt at texturing.
If i could give some tips, its that you should tone down the cloth wrinkles, and add more colour into the shadows rather than black. Also, work on the head texture some more - add variations of hair and colour. He looks kinda like a teddy bear right now. Do a google image search for bulldog and use the reference.
Keep it up lad!
Bulldogs have short hair so you would be better off going for a “stubbley hair” look, rather than the “wavey fur” look. Try laying down a solid color layer and then using another layer set to overlay or soft light to add some suggestions of stubble texture and short hair strokes. Then a third layer could be used to develop the soft highlights, wrinkles and shadows to give some volume to the folds of skin on his face. Just a suggestion
Keep up the good work.
Do you have a uv-snapshot?
I think that in texturing, the uvlayout is one of the most important things. And its always interestring to see.
: )
sure thing, here’s the uv layout, it’s just missing the teeth plane which i’ll add in later.

thanks andy. there’s still a couple of problem areas i’m struggling with. in particular the upper chest as u can see from my latest update. any crits?

Looking much better.
I should make the white areas a bit yellowish - just something other than perfect white - it looks too white if you know what i mean.
Also make his nails less luminous, and try and improve the face map / UVs - it seems a little blurry.
The posture is much better - especially on the shoulders on the side view.
here’s yet another update. i think the rucksack is coming along nicely, the ends of the sleeping bag are prooving to be somewhat of a problem, i may have to go back in and change the uv layout.

nearly finished now, i’ve sorted out the uv’s on the face and shifted some about on the chest so i can but the belts on. everything is textured now, it’s just a case of improving things.
i know i stand no chance of winning this comp (in fact even coming in the top 50% would be good) but it’s all experience and besides, it’s the taking part that matters. thanks for all the help guys.
c&c would be great!

Your quite the fast one. Here’s some C&C, hope it helps.
>check the stretching on the cheeks of the bulldog. Also try to cover that seam within the texture or vertex coloring.
>Try desaturating your colors a bit, that red almost hurts the eye.
>Same goes for those white pants. They need creases, and most of all they need dirt to make 'em come alive
> Add some shadows around the little details on his chest. Like what you did for the white straps on his chest. Do the same for his buttons and the white horizontal things.
>Variate the color of the collar, add some dirt and shadow.
>Try giving the white straps on his chest some detail, they take up a lot of space and look a bit boring the way they are now.
>Also try adding a little shadow on the underside on of his head. it looks really flat. Also a bit more shadow under his armpits and under his crotch would bring more depth to the texture.
>Try to add some leathery texture to the leathery parts like the bag and straps. The more worn, the better.
You’ve got some time left, so try spicing it up as much as possible.
Good luck!
thanks for the crit supervileg, i’ll try and sort all the things out mentioned. at the mo, i’m having my first go at rigging so i’ll try and get round to finishing off the texture in a few days time.
thanks again.
anyone got anything else to add?
i’ve been trying to refine him a bit more now improving all the areas mentioned, rigged him aswell and done the beauty shot.
Can anyone tell me what the correct way is to have applied the texturing cos i was getting problems when it came round to having to move the rifle?
is it ok to have all the accessories attached together, then to do a texture map for them and then to detach them from each other so they can be moved around independently?
here’s the beauty shot, c&c?
