i agree with you on that look like he could have been in a Spawn comic with alot those guns
Game Art Comp #8: Monev the Gale - Trigun
For those who don’t know what Monev looks like, I have created a collage of screen captures
from the episode he was in. This is what I’m using for reference.

I also plan on modeling the backpack and guns on his arms. And I know it will be tough,
but I’ll do the best I can with the muscles. I’ll have some progress to post tomorrow.
Another reference shot I made for trying to get the muscles right.

After working on this for two days, here is what I’ve got so far.

I was around 3400 Tris, but I reduced it down to 2998 (Tris, not quads, even though the image still has quads). I’m a little disappointed by the fact that the ammo got reduced to a string of planes, but I may change that yet. As for the muscles, I’m happy with the way they turned out. The head is pretty tiny, but I think I kept it in proportion judging from my reference images. I want to finalize the mesh as soon as I can so I can start UV mapping it. What do you guys think so far?
do use proud man!!!
you can’t mess with this character plzzz dude do it right
PS: great choice Strider3030, get to work!
Here is an update. I’ve been working on the head. I wanted to be able to animate his face so he can look as fierce as he does in the images, so I modeled in a mouth and some teeth. It took some time optimizing, but I got it down to 352 triangles. Most of the detail is below the visor in the mouth and chin area, but I still wanted to model the rest of a face in case I want to try something with alpha maps. Take a look.

And here is a smooth shaded view with a Photoshop job faking the transpareny on the visor-

So what do you think? Also if you haven’t seen the body, look up to my previous post, it has been posted for awhile, but since I am a new member, it didn’t post it right away so you may have missed it. Any feedback is welcome.
I’m not too familiar with this character, but that being said I think juding by your reference pics the model looks great, get to texturing
I finished my UV map and started texturing him. I’ve got the basic muscle lines and flat color areas textured in, I just need to add tone and detail. Here’s my map and texture -

I really want to finish the texture so I can rig him.
Seems like a bit too much contrast on the muscles… maybe used a dark purple, instead of black, on the texture?
I totally agree, I am only using the black lines as reference for when I add the tone/shading. Like I said, I still need to add tone and detail. I just wanted to show you where the texture is headed.
Here’s the latest version. I think I’m done with the texture. I was going to do more with it, but I like the way it turned out. It kinda has a Kingdom Hearts look to it. Take a look.

Now all I have to do is rig it and make some cool poses.
I can’t say I’m not disappointed. Personally I think it would be much better if you took it to the level of detail in the screengrabs you’ve got. I’m not a fan of the over-simplified look most of the time.
I second that seconding. Make him gritty. As far as Anime goes, that was one of the most down and dirty ones, and this character was mean, and sweaty, and desperate. He looks too clean, more like a toy right now.
On the other hand, if you do decide to keep him this way, at least fix the gradient on his arm guns to be less evenly applied. Right now it looks like cheap flash shading, and it’s the weakest part of the model. If you decide to stick with the simple version, it could work, but I think it could use a bit of tweaking to get it there. Sharpen the highlights, and paint in a few more of the details, particularily on the mechanical bits.
I think if you could push the texturing style more in the direction that qubism did it here with his project with moppius
Note the sharp highlights and sharp lines defining muscles.
It’s a good model, and well worth the extra lovin’, so keep it up!!!
Man, I wish I was as good a texture artist as qubism. My texturing is always the weakest part. But I will give it another try. I can’t promise anything since I have a busy 4th of July weekend planned, but I will try to make it better. Thanks for the honest crits.
I brought the first 3 trigun dvds, and didnt really like them enough to buy the rest, so i never got to see monev, but i did see him in the form of this cool action figure i saw ages ago - that shows what can be done with the character - he kinda looks a bit basic at the moment. I dont think a simplistic toon shaded approach suits him.
Ref images - too bad that the most useful image is of some daft limited edition transparent version.

My recomendation to anyone who wants to watch Trigun is to skip the first disc entirely. The plot REALLY starts picking up around the halfway point of the series… the few discs after the first are leading up to it, but once you get past the halfway point it’s simply amazing.
Vash is one of me favouritest characters… though I really wish I had that giant Monev the Gale action figure to go on my monitor next to Vash…
