Is it me, or does it seem that this comp is dying out? There was a deluge of entries to start with, and as usual, only a few people are still actively working on their model. What is causing the lack of intrest? The theme? The long timeline? The high poly count?
I must admit, my entry may not reach the deadline, or even be completed as i have a few other projects on the go, and im stuck in designers hell - i want to model, but i cant decide on a design to work from.
Maybe the next comp should have a shorter timespan for those with short attention spans like me
Where is our fearless leader, hanzo anyway? Ive not seen him around on the forums for months!
Yeah it seems that way AndyH! I dont think its a problem with the timespan but maybe the huge poly count could have something to do with it? Alot of people seem to jump into the challenge with excitement and then reality hits a few weeks later and they realise their too busy to commit to finishing such a large undertaking!
Yeah. Im not exceptionally busy, just stuck at the design part. I guess it pays to get a clear concept in your head before you jump in with the polygons.
I want to get it finished - i hate having unfinished work, but im more motivated to start animating the bunny girl i made, or to make another celshaded anime gal!
i blame resident evil 4.
perhaps more realistically, people got real bored over xmas and had lots of time to start a model, but finishing and polishing a 15k model is a lot of work. i’m sure many of the people in the comp have lots of other priorities (e.g. crunch time, paying projects, prior commitments, other deadlines, etc) and sometimes you just have to let the unofficial comps slide. one other option is to simply BE kwak, in which case you can model your whole entry in like 10 minutes
that said, i do intend to have at least the modeling portion of my model ready by the deadline. I probably won’t get around to UVing him though.
Yeah Adam I guess I wont be finished on time myself, I’ll have it modelled for sure but I dont think I’ll get much further before the deadline. 15k count is something I’ve never attempted before, its alot!
I have been doing paying stuff up until last week so i’ve jumped into this one a few days ago, alas I left it too late I think but I will finish it on my own deadline. Its the best I can do!
Seeing as i highly dbout ill finish my entry in time, id like to contribute in my own little way by becoming a judge?
It wont be hard, being as ill be judging - a the most - about 4 entries!
Woohoo!
Metal gear solid 3 is finally out (in the UK) this friday! Thats scuppered my entry good and proper!
I’m in the same boat. I asked for recommendations awhile back of ideas and they still didnt’ stick. I’m not gonna enter the competition, i’m just gonna make a fighting character of my own liking. I’m tired of sitting around for weeks in this “design” phase.
The challenges over at CGchat always get a lot of final entries. The winner gets a book of his/her choice from Peachpit Press or New Riders and a year subscription to 3dsk. All of the entries are also post realtimecg.com
Maybe CGnetworks could give the winner a book of their choice from Ballistic or something else?
The point of a CGTalk challenge such as the GameArtChallenges is not to win a fancy prize such as a book, but to grow and prosper as a CG artist. The nice thing about the challenges (IMO) are that there is not any awards, and the people who enter, do so to improve, and this shows in their entries. CGTalk provides one of the best networks of professionals, many of who come and critique these challenges to help those who want to learn and prosper their skills in the first place. The competitors love what they do, and for this reason they enter the challenges. Basically the whole point of a CGTalk Challenge is to improve your skills and just have fun. And if there were prizes awarded to the contestants, you would have a lot of entries from people seeking the prize and the prize only. And that would just not be the same.
Well the practice and fun doesnt seem to be enought motivation for everyone  I think that some kind of prize would serve as an extra motivation for those usually join these challenges. I doubt that a ton of people would jump in for a book or whatever the prize may be.
from christmas to late january, nobody posted anything really. i think having the holidays in the middle of the thing killed us. i have no friends, and i don’t like my family, so i kept working for a week or so after christmas, but no-one was around to crit so i lost a little motivation. once work kicked in again I was pretty well finished. we’ve got the australian grand prix on this weekend, and i’ve been preparing endless (version if we win and version if we lose) projects for BMW. bastards just won’t let me out of the studio.
so, for mine it was the long deadline. i was really excited, and worked hard early on, then i just petered out with the competition. thing is people need to be kept in the habit of working this way (outside hours, for fun and knowledge etc), and the world has a way of sucking you back to the day-to-day if you look away from a personal project for too long.
anyway, that’s more like a blog entry than i’d hoped.
so long as i don’t back rodney up, there’s hope yet that i’ll finish him.

obelisk dude you pretty much put it in a nut shell, explaining even the psychology.
I think your absolutely right, and that I actually made the deadline to long, stakes a bit high, not to mention the way off timing of the year
I can’t wait until the next comp, my mouse hand is itchy
I’m officially “out” as well - I’ve already sunk at least 30 hours into this comp and I’m nowhere near finished, and I’ve just got too many other things to work on.
That said, it was still very beneficial for me - I’d never tried anything even remotely as detailed as this model, and I learned a lot in the process.
Even if people don’t finish their entries, it does NOT mean it was a total loss!
I think that I’m pretty much just gonna go back an Finish rigging mine andbe done with it for a while. It was fun though.
i am working to get a plan together and presented for an official comp…one with prizes and everything… stay tuned for more info
i just hope there would be more interest than what is currently shown…it is actuallyrather disheartening to see the decline in the comps lately…
I got my first full-time job in game industry, and I had to learn XSI in quite short term. Sorry but I had no time to finish my entry
But I will finish him in (distant
) future and I’ll post him here.
Bentllama - I cannot wait!
