Game Art Challenge #11

#61

Aaaah damn this comp sounds nice. I’d like to join but I still have to do my WIP and for this comp I’d like to do a female one but I don’t have any background of historical women (10-15th century)…
Obviously I slept too much during history education

#62

Great competition. And for once I’m going to participate despite school. I already know whom I’m going to do. CYBER-Hitler, lol. Think "Hitler’s corpse brought back to life and fitted with state-of-the-art prosthetics and weapons. I considered Churchil, but he’s too fat for 8000 pollys. I’m joking, of course. I just don’t find him as interesting and I want to do an evil character.

I’ll call him HITLOR!!! Finishing move: Blitzkrieg (Or is that too obvious?)

#63

Someone has already done something similar to this…

Here…

#64

Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I certainly hope no one minds two people using the same historical figure. After all, his idea is a robot with Hitler’s brain, while mine will actually be largely organic. I think there is enough differrence here to avoid a conflict of interest. Besides, it might be fun to see two unique interpretations of this well known tyrant.

#65

Seeing that the basis of the contest is to create the character in your own fashion, it shouldn’t matter. As long as it’s your own style, everyone could technically do the same character and each one would be different.

#66

No, I don’t think that it will be a problem, just telling you in-case you wanted to know that you would not be the only person on the board with Hitler.

Also, Bentllama, any word on the form shorting problem?

#67

Awesome idea for a competition. I love the open endedness of allowing for use of a known historical character and letting the creativity fly with the improvisation. I’m finally at the point where i think i can do a character that won’t look like block-o man next to the other entries. Good luck all, and to myself.

#68

I dont think 2 people doing the same character is a problem - the chance of both characters being finished and submitted is quite rare!

#69

 hehe, good point Andy… though I do hope you guys can prove us wrong…

no problem with 2 of them, as long as their unique different.

#70

hmm, interesting. In light of these events I might have to switch back to my previous (and favorite) idea.

#71

The way i see it, is - no offense to anyone - that some people see the front page plug, think “ooh, ill do that” and come up with the most popular ideas. However, the chances of them finishing it and sticking to it for the 3 month period is a different matter.
All i can say is that as long as the designs are different, i dont see a problem with doing the same character - the one who manages to finish their work is the one worthy of the chosen historical person!

I say this on account of the last few comps - all the cool ideas are taken early and not finished - to hell with it, i say! Its very frustrating to see the best ideas taken and not completed.

Just thought id mention, that i reccomend everyone get this great book!

http://www.otaku.co.uk/cgi-bin/itemview.asp?itemid=58835a

Ive had it for a while now, and its one of the best artbooks i own and is gonna be indespensible for this project!
Chock-full of colourful, chunky capcom goodness from nearly every good game theyve done

#73

Thats a great book andy H, Ill be getting this one for sure! Thanks for the tip!

Edit1: hmm, apparently no thread sorting has been sorted. I thought for a moment it was. It was just that my browser remembered the “sort by last post” I clicked before. So nevermind.

#74

Im in for sure, but won’t have time to start this until after x-mas.

I’ve still not settled my mind on what to do, but Im playing with the idea of making Odin’s son Vidar - the second strongest of the norse gods (strongest would be Thor).

Not quite sure though…

/Vidar

I havent witnessed many game art challenges besides the last one but by the sounds of it Andy alot of people drop out, whats the average amount of people who complete a challenge? I think the last one was 13 completions? I intend to have my designs done to start in the new year.
Wow that book looks great, where did you get it from?(link?)

ok, one quick question, one 1024 and two 512 maps for everything (spec., bump, normal) or may we use seperate maps for these?

#77

Heya Hanzo,

Thanks for the cool topic for this contest… I had a question though.

In most new fighting games 20,000 tris or higher is standard. (Look at DOA3/Ultimate or Soul Calibur 2) I was wondering why the budget was set at 8000? Is it illegal to go higher? I’m tempted to since I don’t really care about winning…

Just for reference the DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball characters are upwards of 25,000 tris.

#78

good question. yeah do the bump and specular and normal count?

as for the same entries, i don’t know why people are having trouble over this, the topic is so broad and there are limitless possibilities.

id like to share some other choices i wouldve gotten otherwise, to those who can’t decide:

icarus
william tell
merlin
don quixote
mick jagger
lawrence of arabia
king tut
ramses the great
osiris
frank sinatra
ELVIS
marylin monroe
Nixon
muhamad ali
million dollar man
medusa
little red riding hood
prince charming
dumbo
michael jackson
babe ruth

Ohmi, you got me dude, I did the research before I wrote up the challenge, I think 8000tries is plenty enough, though I was tempted to do the full 20000 + then I had decided 15k then I dropped it again 8k I think that would have scared a lot of artists away that mostly into low poly game modeling away from entering… I mean 20k is high poly, but ya never know, maybe I was wrong. :frowning:

Ifx3d, yes you can use multi maps but only 3 base color maps, with the various others (alpha etc) they wont count…

#80

I do agree that 8000 is rather low for a singular fighting charcter within a 1vs1 type of fighting game, especially when there are tests with next gen hardware that has it pushing obesely large groups of characters, with complex AI,multiple passes, the whole shebang, etc - holding that same 8000 budget in a non-fighting game genre…

however…

this is a game art challenge

game art = art defined by real time engine limitations

challenge = surviving limitations

with the native chief I am creating, who has multiple snakes in his hair, fringe and other detailed adornment…I would love a larger budget…but I have challenged myself, and hopefully I will triumph…

*** if you decide to up the budget Hanzo, whish it is early enough in the challenge to do, I would not go above 15,000…exceeding the 12-15,000 range is an easy way for novice modelers to get caught up in detail and lose topology efficiency…game modeling after all, this generation or next, will ALWAYS be about making every last poly/pixel count…
