Thanks for the info KeeganB.
Another 2 questions pop up.
-Fictional characters, do they have to be human?
-What is considered historical? Do people famous in the eighties for example count as historical? Is there a year limit?

Your questions do make it difficult to answer but my understanding is that fictional means anyone fictional from films, comics, books and so on! They can be either human or non human i think?
I dont think theres any time limit on the historical thing, i will be doing someone from the 1940’s which to me sounds historical whereas Kroax is suggesting someone whos real right now and alive but he is historical to the sport of football which to me sounds acceptable also!

w00t, frontpage, funny how there’s now 32 ppl looking at this thread instead of the usual 1-2.
I asked the ‘human’ question too, but no reply from Hanzo yet.
I can see the point of doing normal fictional chars such as … hmm … can’t think of anyone at the moment, but not in doing ones like Spiderman, or other super heros, there’s not a lot of poetic license to make them into a fighter.
Pyrotechnic - Yeah man I agree with you there, theres no fun in doing a fictional character like ‘The Hulk’ or ‘Spiderman’ when you can do someone that is less fantastic and it requires a bit of clever thought to make it appealing and ‘cool’ for a fighting game.
Everything seems to be done already when its a comic book character

<-- confused
I don’t get it. How are historical figures and capcom characters related? Why those 2 themes? Why not historical and xmen or historical and marvel…etc. Was this just done by random?
Why not just make historical figures similar to capcom characters? That would be challenging.
Oh well. I’m not arguing with your decision, I’m just confused and can’t really start until I “get it”.
kudos to all the people that are leaning heavily on the historic aspect…your imagination will thank you.
look at it this way…the character that I am doing [check my thread] can be seen as an Akuma equivalent, if I so chose to take him in that direction…or I could look at other fighters for inspiration…like Heihachi in Tekken…
I think of it as Historical figures (real and fictional) designed in a creative style similar to capcom fighting game characters.
Designing modern comic book heroes and film stars only shows a lack of creativity. We’ve already had several challenges about redesigning cartoon characters, game charactesr, and villains, and etc.
bentllama - Your exactly right man, the real historic characters that have been chosen so far have so much potential and theres so much cool things that could be done with them, I can’t wait to see how everyone get on in this challenge!
Keegan
in a way, our challenge’s defeat and triumph lies in the fact that it is open-ended within a certain theme…
other game art challenges around the web sometimes focus on VERY sepcific material…that is not to say that specifics do not work, just that there are varied levels of direction a challenge can take…
…this challenge is VERY open to interpretation yet structured enough to have a theme threaded throughout all entries…
I am looking forward to it…
I don’t think I will have time to compete, but here are some ideas:
Madmartigan - Willow
Inigo Montoya - Princess Bride
Rocky Marciana
Pete Sampras
Thor
Odin
Ahura Mazda
Huitzilopochtli - Aztec war god
Gen. Patton
Crocodile Dundee
Clubber Lang
Hulk Hogan
This sounds like a great challenge, I’ll be watching it closely.
It sounds to me like it can be a real person or a fictional character from a video game or comic book.
The hard part for me is making up a story for them, I’ve never been good at that.
Hmm…sounds like an interesting competition…if I have time, I’ll probably enter, so I’m calling my possible ideas for an entry now:
Jesse James (from the good old wild west), or Elizabeth Bathory (The Blood Countess). Probably won’t get to start modelling this till after Christmas though…grrr…
muwhahaha…
I can’t really decide which one to do though…Jesse James in the style of a suped up Civil War Veteran/Bandit with some nice steam-punk style machine guns and fire-arms…
Or a really wicked, vampiric, Countess Bathory, with dripping blood, and all sorts of cutting and torture implements…
Ok, well that’s what I was hoping/thinking this would be. But I got thrown off when someone said to do hulk and not “like hulk”. I would prefer to see historical characters and prefer to do that, as appose to just remaking another comic book character that already exists.
Hey guys, long time no see
I’ve got sh*tloads of work on at the moment, and will do over Christmas too…
I really want to sign up and do a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde character… just depends on time
Great idea for a comp btw
questions, questions…
Can two persons choose the same historical person to participate in the comp?
Someone just nabbed my idea. I’ll probably think of a new one, but others are likely to ask the same question…
I must enter this competition, and I should actually have the time to work on it now…
Although I have a ton of my own projects just waiting for me to work on them. This comp just seems too much fun to pass up on. But then so far all of the comps have been too interesting to ignore… So I’ll probably never get to my own projects
.
Now to just come up with a cool subject. I liked KWAK’s idea for Rasputin, but that would be an easy way of coming up with a concept
.
Hmm… what to do…
