Game Art Challenge #11

Title: Historical vs Fiction /like/ Jack the Ripper vs CAPCOM’S finest!

 about: should please everyone ;)

For this competition we're going to make fighting game characters, that's right! huge tri count on this one. We're going all out on industry standard tech. But enough of that, I'll get to tech spec later. The base of this competition is rooted in the over flamboyantly designed Historical fighting game character, or in modern Ideological fiction. This competition is not so much as ' make the most original theme' as it is ' express in the most original way' and at the same time this should give your hard working imagination a rest. It should exercise your brains fundamentally designing strategy, so don't expect it to be too easy. In short, you need to focus on characters that already exist, spanning from a sick Jack the Ripper to some capcom game character, but you must design it in YOUR way not just some faniac copy. Also your version of the character must look playable, so as if you actually seen it in a game, that character would be your choice.

To simplify, make either a stylized historical character, or a purly fictional modern character reworked and redesigned.

 GUIDELINES:

 Modeling

We will be using a very generous max [edit] 15000 tries, with a note that 3d Fighter games speaking of characters are out of its nature the focus of the polies, and more must be spent on your character then anything else, and that should be plenty for one game character. I want to see creativity in the use of this share of tries. I don't want to see hundreds of tries wasted on nearly flat surfaces. Focus the tries on detail areas and in areas with heavy curvature. I want to see some nice faces ;) here, if you cannot use 15k tries feel free not to, keep in mind that these challenges should first and foremost be a learning experience.

 Textures

As I promised use modern standard tech, use what you like Diffuse, Alpha Transparency, Specula, Bump, and of course Normal Maps, but with a bit of warning, use normal mapping at your own risk, this is cool tech, but it it's not magic. I will allow three maps, first ones max can be from 1024 that's good for body, because of the high poly counts a 512 for the head, and another 512 for optional weapons etc as well.

 SUBMISSIONS:

A thread must be started in the appropriate forum, so that feedback and progress can be posted. As in the previous contest, multiple submissions will not be allowed, only one submission per contestant.

Your work in progress (WIP) thread should be named as follows:

GAC 11: (Character of your choice, a bit about)

 Examples:

GAC 11: Lord Sauron, Lord of the Rings

Make sure you post in your WIP-thread regularly, so you can get feedback as you progress. Half the fun of the contest is seeing the progression, but don't forget to submit your entry when the time comes.

Within your first post, please show some sort of concept or reference. Share more detail about the design that you are going for, also post some writing on the character, this should be easy to find on the net.

Submissions must be your work !

 DEADLINE

The contest begins with the posting of this thread, and ends February 28, almost 3 months. Somewhere in the middle of that time, I will post a "Game Art Challenge #11 Submissions" only post entries here, until the deadline. This challenge should and will be demanding, but it is no killer, you have plenty of time to do that collective thing. Also I don't think you should put off starting or finishing, plz for your own good, get it done! If you can do that before the dead line MORE POWER TO YA! Just think if you want to change something, rework a time consuming aspect, or just create/tweak the beauty render endlessly to perfection, you'll have the time.

 THE SUBMISSION THREAD

After I have created the submission thread, you may begin submitting your entries until the deadline is reached.

 SUBMISSION SHOULD INCLUDE

 In writing

 * brief about/history of your character.

 * A link to your original thread, showing progress.

 * The polygon count (in triangles) of your completed mesh.

 In images:

 1. Any ref or concept image that you may have used to dream up the design for your selected character.

 2. orthographic front, back, and side view screencaps of the model, and only the model. The captures should be of the viewport in solid wireframe view mode (or equivalent), with no texturing visible.Compile the 3 views into one image. if using normal mapping please include separate captures in solid shade, without wireframe.

 3. Selection of perspective images showing off your character at different angles, or in different states (if animated/rigged). Images should be compiled into one picture, and it must be no bigger than 1024x768.

 4. Show us your texture sheets for the character, color, alpha, norm, etc.

 5. The beauty shot. Pose your character somehow, and if you like, place it in an environment while still keeping the character the focus of the shot. Render it as you see fit, image no bigger than 1024x768.

 JUDGING

Please PM me if you want to volunteer for judging - As always, the system is:

 3 points for 1st place

 2 points for 2nd place

 1 point for 3rd place

Judges are asked to give focused critiques in the areas of:

 1. Mesh construction, flexibility, topology, good and bad use of the tri limit.

 2. UVW mapping and texture painting, effective use of normal maps (if used).

 3. Presentation of the character, respective to fighting game play.

 Current judges are:

You may notice the great illustration that I used to plug the challenge. It is the character Guy from CAPCOM fighter legend. You will find more great illustrations just like that one here: [http://digitalninja.mk5.org/DNmain.htm](http://digitalninja.mk5.org/DNmain.htm) The artist's name is Robbie Reilly. Great art Robbie!

I’m going to post this over here for inspiration:

If you’re considering doing a Historical character:

we wouldn’t be doing just a generic time-period fighter, we’d be doing one of the many characters (kings, peasents, murderers, generals, artists, writers) from world history and exaggerating them and beefing them up in the style of a fighting game, Here’s a few cool examples…
[ul]
[li]Jack the Ripper - a dirty street fighter, dressed in a trench coat and a top hat, an apron sprayed with blood, his face is aged and scarred, his teeth are broken and yellow. He creeps in the arena, tosses his coat on the ground, and pulls a hacksaw and butcher’s knife from his bag of goodies. His special move could be decapitation, or he could bite somebody’s ear off.[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]Vlad the Impaler - a noble king, clad in gold armor and draped in a blood red sash, marches proudly into the arena, sheathed in his belt, a massive sword with a bat and skull emblem, in his hand, a 12’ long wooden pike. He’s a brutal fighter, not only with great cleaving sword, but he’s also been known to drive the pike through the skull of his enemies.[/li][/ul]
[ul]
[li]Vladimir Rasputin - a dirty, sinister looking mage floats ominously into the arena, his eyes closed, his hands pressed firmly together as though he was praying to some higher power. He’s lanky and muscular, and stands easily 7’ tall. Throwing off his coat of rags, he levitates high above the ground and blasts the other fighters with a bizarre stream of magic and fire.[/li][/ul]those are just some quicky ideas, here’s a list of other characters that could be done, most of these are from Western History, since I’m not really familiar with the historical figures of the rest of the world:

Caeser
Brutus
Ghengis Khan
Napoleon (leggo my eggo)
Billy the Kid
Leonardo da Vinci
Alexander the Great
Cleopatra
Tutankhamun
Caligula
Lady Godiva
Eric Bloodaxe
William the Conqueror
Henry the fifth
The Marquis de Sade
Snofru
Kaiser Wilhelm II
Lizzy borden
Edgar Allen Poe

Looks nice,
So lets the mortal kombat begin :stuck_out_tongue:

Brilliant Hanzo,
I’m in and I look forward to seeing some obscure characters from history that we all might not know about!

Eek - 3 months???

I bet theres still gonna be loads who dont finish in time

Not sure on this one myself. I really fancied making a ‘regular’ fighting character like the ones in Dead or alive 3 or Tekken 4, but the historical aspect is a bit off putting for me as im not much of a history buff. I dont really wanna make a butch, menacing henry the eighth or anything…!
Im gonna have a think. If i can find someone and make it into a soul calibur style fighter with weapons and stuff, then ill be happy.

Good poly limits and texture budgets too

Was there ever a frontpage plug for the final entries for the last comp? Better get this one plugged too - that way we can get loads of people on board who’ll give up after laying down a few polys  Also, the thread sorting thing should be sorted for this comp cos theres gonna be loads of applicants.

By the way, should the characters look serious or cartoony? Some of the ideas going around just sound comical in a ‘rival schools’ way. And surely youre not serious about using LOTR as a character example? I thought it was figures from actual history - not fictional.

Finally, i know it sounds petty, but could you change the guidelines to say that the “Game art competition 11” prefix on the thread title should now be “GAC11” ? The thread titles are going to be so long, we wont be able to see what the latest post is on the front menu

hey Andy, if you want to make something like soul calibur, go ahead you must only submit with in the guidelines of modern/historical, real/fiction of characters… hey so specific comic book characters as a base will even do, you just have to make sure the characters redesigned in your way.

 I could just see it! THE HULK (note: my way) in a tuxedo! vs soul calibur ! hehe jk…

dude very good idea on GAC11, I will change… ( that’s not a subject rule  )

#7

Hmm - im getting confused now.

The comp has wide enough scope to design things ranging from beefed-up battling napoleons and king arthurs to comic book characters or lord of the rings, yet i cant make a completeley original fighter based on certain martial arts and not based on any actual person?

Can you give us some examples? Just to give me an idea whats allowed and how far you can take it? Im stumped…

Hi all, been quite a while since I visited here.

I thought we have done fighting character before…hmmm. Historical character will be cool thou.

Btw, Hanso, I think it will save alot of confusion to indicated a fix number as the tris cap (as opposed to a range). I think 8000 tris will be damn cool, thats a lot of triangles for tonnes of details.

I won’t be joining the competition cause I already got a new personal project underway. (The WIP thread can be found in my signature). I’s a pity, if I was announced early, I may consider joining…since I was pondering whether to create a Diablo-style Rogue game character (which can fit in the competition well) or high polygon fantasy style maiden character (ala Arwen of LOTR). I choose the later of course.

However, I don’t mind being a judge…am I qualify, Hanso??

I encourage the use of Normal maps, as a learning experience…if time permitted. Its additional work of course, & chances are, you will spend alot of time battling with issues & such. But I believe it will be standard feature in future game engines & a valuable skill to own. Of course, if anyone have a question on Normal map, feel free to drop me a PM. I’m no expert but I will try my best to help, with the little experience I have with Normal map gained from the last competition.

Finally I wish this competition a success, with lots of cool entries. Good luck to all contestants…Let the tounament begin…

Think of Cervantes (pirate), and Mitsurugi (samurai)…it’s possible. Find something and make it your own. I could think of several pirates to remake in the style of Cervantes. Hmm…I may do that.

Good work hanzo. I can’t wait to get started. The guidelines still seem a little confusing, but you can’t please everyone. I hope no one tries to create existing Capcom characters. Originality is much more fun. And any orcs or elves will be…will be laughed at. We may even point at you, and insult your mother.

#10

Ok I’m getting a bit confused myself here, I thought it was based on a real person who existed from history rather than Sauron or the Incredible Hulk if you know what I mean. I skimmed over stuff so maybe I missed something?!
Andy I think it would be fairly easy to tailor a person from history to match something that would be along the style of a Dead or Alive/Tekken fighter? Law/Bruce Lee is a good example.

ow crap! darn PKD I know you would have really made a good one  ow well, I DEEM YOU JUDGE… general of hells army!

To simplify, make either a stylized historical character, or a purely fictional modern character reworked and redesigned.

Ok guys thanks for helping me tweak ;), I’ve just clarified what I meant…

And sorry Andy you cant make a completely original fighter, but you can twist the hell out of an existing character to meet your demands…

#12

Wow, great topic hanzo. Hopefully, I can comptete if I can think of something after I come back from vacation.

#13

So, we have to pick an existing person, from any time period, and remodel them in our own way to be in a fighting game? That’s how I understand it.

#14

Hanzo, you are a prince among men.

#15

I like it, count me in.

Now for some research.

#16

i am in to!

now for some research…

i’m freekin out man!

#17

I’m in too.

I’m thinkin’ Jack Torrance with some sort of twist…

Time to go read The Shining again

<also freekin out>

#18

Question…

Say I chose Abraham Lincoln, then I can keep what identifies him (hat, etc), but at the same time give him a biker jacker with the stars and stripes, etc?

cheers.

#19

yeah, I’m pretty certain that would be okay, actually that’s a really cool idea.

@Bent: I can’t wait to see what you come up with man

-K.

#20

Question:

Would it be possible for me to do a character which has 2 variations?

Like when you’re fighting you get to a certain “rage” level or something and he changes. Kinda like Bloody Roar but without the animals.

I don’t expect any extra texture maps/polygons for the other variation. I wouldn’t know what to do with 8000 tris anyway.

Essentially what I’m asking is, can I make 2 versions of a character with 4000 tris each and the 3 texture maps shared between them?

Thanks.
