Game Art Challenge #10: Huge mining truck APC - insane gun turret

How odd. i’m sure i posted this thread last night. now its not here anymore…anyway…

i wanna do one of those massive off-highway mining trucks but converted into a rediculous APC/storage vessel. The idea will that there will be a huge turret on top for offencive and defencive strategies, and the payload area will be converted into somewhere that troops and stuff can be carried about in. if the polys allow it, i want to add 1 or 2 mini gun turrets in other places too. the driver will be visible in his cockpit.

theres a very quick concept for now. i will update with a proper picture later with a story.

ok, that image has just made my day :slight_smile: Can’t wait to see what the stuff is now. Also glad I’m not the only one who seems to be going slightly mad!

heres a better concept. i tried drawing this by hand but didnt manage. this gives an idea anyway. The stuff can be anything such a ammo, food, ripped leather jackets ( a must for post-apoc ) , spike belts, loot and prisoners. thats all kept in a basement type area. above that will be where the troops/renagades prepare for deployment to take over some township in the middle of a desert and plunder the area with an iron fist.

i really like the concept. it looks like the dumping bed (dunno what else to call it really lol) stays upright, considering the storage & troop cargo holds. that’s cool, but i think it’d be really cool if that could still utilize the dumping feature, like being able to plant itself in the sand and have the turrets swivel to shoot in that direction… if that makes any sense lol (sorry it sounded a lot easier to explain in my head). but basically the driver could pull up some where, pull the lever to raise the back & then you’d have a barricade (or if there were a couple of these guys, you could have a makeshift wall?) with mounted gun turrets, firing on who’s ever crazy enough to try to attack lol. just an idea i had. keep going though. this is an awesome concept.

yeah the paylaod area stays upright just cos of all the stuff in there, But thats not a bad idea at all for it to rise up and be like a defencive wall…hmmm…

now some 3d…

the wee orange guy is a zombie model from another project. jes just there for scale.

Nice! This is looking pretty fierce.

If you’ve got some more polys and want extra weaponry, you could put some smaller guns along the side with little eyeslits for the passengers.

thanks guys. yeah i was thinking of putting in small cut out bits for troops to shoot out of. kinda like a castle. i added them, but i dunno if’ i’ll bother with gun barrels sticking out. got enough stuff already. this is an Unwrapping nightmare cos i got a load of objects. takin a while so far. anyway heres what i have just now. added a few bits… Polycount = 3463 at the mo. leaves me anough to build a character. the 2 strap bits at the back will e rop ladders and the railings at the front will just be a plain with alpha texture.

Talk about CRAZY GUNS, thats gonna woop up on something. Cool shiz man, that thing textured is going to be off the hook.

havnt touched this for a bit but now the UV’s are done, Phew…but my worst fears about this model have proved true. Since this vehicle is so bloody big, trying to do details in the givin 1024 size, its proving difficult cos theres so many peices fighting for pixel attention.

heres a texture example i’ve been playing around with.

the main body colour is ok, since those bits are getting most texture. but check out that light. i have this crakin photo (500X500) which i used and shrunk down. same with the gril, and vents on the box thing. the detail goes way out the window of course when u shrink stuff! i could try painting it by hand, but i usually prefer using photo refrence for textures not sure what i can do here. maybe it was a bad design desision to go with this vehicle considering the texture size allowance? i wanted to save the 512x512 for a character as well, however i was thinking of using most of that for the huge gun turret but then the character will need a map of its own, cos i want to pose him in diffrent locations on the truck.
btw that guy in the orange is a zombie i made for a Mod, and he has a 1024x1024 map on him!

The first thing you can and should do is split your model down the middle, delete half, and re-unwrap. Then mirror it over. This will let you get twice the texture detail and since you’re not going to see the left and right sides at the same time, the mirroring will cause minimal problems.

The problem you’re going to have with this vehicle is the simple fact that you’ve got too much to NOT optimize and reuse texture space. Rethink your texture use and don’t be afraid to add extra polies to help you reuse texture space.
