Gallery acceptance

#1

If its not too much trouble could you please explain to me why this piece was rejected? I had figured i had guaged the level of the gallery here and really don’t think this falls below the quality requirement. Any explanation would be much appreciated.

I’ll start off by saying I actually really like the piece, I just felt that it was treading a strange line between rough unfinished and rough intentional. If you look at the flamenco piece that’s currently plugged on the front page, it has a really lovely rough brushwork but the roughness is very consistent and as a whole, it all pulls together very well to form the image. Whereas your work, on the other hand, is not as consistent which makes it feel unfinished by comparison. The head and shoulders of the grey character in your piece feel the most finished; the brushwork is rough but tight, but then it becomes, somehow, fluffier (for lack of a better word) as it goes down the body and this creates a strange inconsistency for me. Essentially, I feel the image could be tightened up a little more as a whole, so that the style is more consistent. The floor, in particular, is very visually dominant due to the dark tones, and it looks rushed compared to the rest of the image. Lastly, a minor nitpick - the little girl’s left foot appears to be in an impossible position. And while I realise that realism is obviously not your intent, it does look quite odd.

I also find your colour palette quite uncomfortable, but that’s really a personal thing and is probably intentional from your end.

thanks for the prompt reply. I agree about the brush strokes now that i consider it. The foot position i don’t find impossible though, as i used myself for reference. Maybe the lighting on it or the orientation is the problem. I’ll try working on the things you mentioned however and resubmit later. I’m not really sure what you mean when you say the palette is uncomfortable though.

I think you’re right that it’s the lighting and/or orientation of the foot. It’s a relatively small fix, really.

Regarding the colour palette, I just personally find it strange to look at. I think it’s the lack of complimentary tones. As I said, it’s purely a personal thing and not something that’s going to prevent your image from being accepted though.

Hi,
I don’t want to open a new thread that is why i am posting my query in this particular thread. I hope this does not create any problem.
My recent submission(This) has been declined from the gallery.
I’d like to know if this is because of the flat black background.
The reason for declining is “This work does not yet meet our standards”.
In any case, please let me know.
Regards
Azeem
