GAC#11 - Zombie Napoleon + Mr. Sharpe the man-servant

#1

hey guys,

I went a-looking for my old thread, but it seems to have been deleted. So, as you can see, I’ve gone back to my original idea - but i’ve altered the back story a bit.

1812, Napoleon Bonaparte leads his men against Mikhail Kutuzov’s forces in Borodino, Russia. during the battle, Napoleon catches sight of Kutuzov on the battlefield, and challenges him to a dual, before Napoleon can raise his sword, Kutuzov begins to chant some ancient curse, moments later Napoleon is struck by unearthly lightning, and falls to the ground. Kutuzov, still chanting in some dead-tongue, levels his sabre and beheads Napoleon.

September 7th, 1822, 10 years to the day after Napoleon’s death, the ground has settled on the plains of battle, Borodino is peaceful, the dead have been buried and forgotten. Deep below the earth, under 6 feet of cold, dark dirt lies Napoleon Bonaparte’s lifeless, headless corpse…But there are mysterious forces at work - the spark of life still glimmers in Napoleon’s rotting, worm infested heart.

Lightning strikes again … 10 years to the day,
the air crackles with electricity,
the ground crawls and writhes,
and out of the cold, damp earth crawls the most horrific sight one might ever witness…Zombie Napoleon.

He scours the battlefield for days in search of his missing head, unaware that it now resides in Mikhail Kutuzov’s trophey room. Desperate, Zombie Napoleon digs a ancient skull out of the ground and places it upon his stump neck, eager to take revenge on Kutuzov…

Napoleon will be accompanied by his man-servant, Mr. Sharpe - a mute little goblin like creature…

more to come tomorrow when i start modeling.

wow, you found it, I was wondering where it went.

anway here’s the start of the model, just a quicky thing i knocked out tonight. Haven’t optimized it at all, right now it’s sitting at around 9.5k tris - I can easily knock it down to 7k - especially in the head.

this is heavily inspired by a character in Mike Migonla’s Hellboy: Wake the Devil.

ummm, tomorrow I’m gonna make his legs and finish the trench coat, then model up his accessories. I’m probably not going to be normal mapping this character…at least I’m not planning to, but who knows, I might break out zbrush and do a little sculpting when the low poly is done.

I’m gonna play up the proportions a bit tomorrow as well, make the arms and hands longer, I see him being very spider like, maybe even running on all fours.
cheers,

-K.

Outstanding, not really anything more to say. can see a real winner here!

I’m more or less done the model, so here he is, Zombie Napolean. I’ve got about 3k left, so I’m gonna spend that on Mr. Sharpe, Napolean’s tiny little man-servant. I’ve probably spent about 6 hours now, if anyone is interested.

simply amazing man !! you really made a clean and wonderfull model i like it alot !!

an idea : add medals and accessories used on that time, maybe a golden watch or an old pistol, it would be neat

#7

It looks GREAT!

but…aside from the outfit, there isnt anything “Napolean” about him imo. Maybe make him short? I mean, when I think Napolean I think short dude.

#8

here’s the sidekick, i just whipped him up. I’'m not for sure yet if I’m gonna keep the little guy, i might just invest the polys back into the napolean model.

deathtrip - the hat is the biggest ‘napoleon’-esque thing i got on him, the costume is loosely based on a costume I’ve seen in a painting. I’m not too worried about him being an exact representation of Napoleon. Thanks for the comments though  Also, according to some historical texts I’ve read, Napoleon wasn’t all that short, he was actually of average height, the whole short thing came about due to some mis-translation of a corenor’s report.

Looks amazing as usual kwak. Im not gonna dwell too long on the usual flawless modeling ive come to expect from you, so ill let rip with the hard-core crits!

I really dont like his head for a start - it looks a lot like a monkeys skull (perhaps the brows, large orbits, or the teeth?) and doesnt look human at all. I know hes meant to be an old zombie and all, but surely he could look more like these fellers?

You dont need sharp teeth and angry brows to look evil!

And… thats it for the bad things!

I dont really think he looks capcom ish, but if they made a tekken style game featuring the undead - hed be right up there!

Keep it up son, we could have a winner here… just dont abandon it! Get it finished!

Damn, with the speed your getting this done, youre motivating me to finish my entry… not long left now…

Holy Shmoly, Brilliant! y only crit would be to increase the volume of the head like you have the hands! thins will shorten him a little and add to his appeal.

could you do a tutorial of your modelling system as i’ve been sloggin away at games 7 years and never been able to work that fast! (i understand clear idea is needed in your head or on paper, but still so much in so few hours…wow!) or easier still point us in the direction of this poly by poly modelling technique, no idea whats it about but presumably it’s like unravelling a wooly jumper, but backwards!

you’re defo onto a winner here.

Im up for that!
Your models are always so clean, with perfectly flowing topology, unlike my slapdash vertex pulled meshes. Enlighten us!

#12

I find the fact you named the sideckick “Mr Sharpe” quite amusing…

#13

Oustanding!

You did say you’d get around to it. Exceptional modeling as always.

#14

yeah, I guess the head could use some revisions, I originally was trying to stick really closely to a character from Mike Mignola’s ‘Wake the Devil’, but I guess Mignola’s stuff doesn’t translate perfectly into 3d, I’ll revise the head tonight. I’m not trying to necessarily make him look capcomish, maybe more like guilty gear, or darkstalkers - I’m not too familiar with fighting games.

As for a tutorial, I might be able to whip something up, I’ve recorded a few vids of myself modeling (mostly high poly), but I seem to get a bit of stage fright when modeling on video…makes me nervous.

The idea behind Mr. Sharpe, is that he’s some kinda weird little mutant manservant, and when they go into battle, before Napolean can even draw his sword, Mr. Sharpe jumps into action and starts beating the snot out of the badguys, he’s just totally insane, and in order to get him to stop fighting you have to put your hand on his head.

cheers.

hehe i thought it was related to Bernard Cornwell’s historic/adventure novels (they are set in the times of Napoleon) … it’d be quite an effort to force mr. Sharpe from the novels to help Napoleon

#16

The modeling is great, speed is just unreal.
Only critic is that your Napolean is probably too tall. A shorter version would have been prefer.
Keep up the good work.

#17

I came onto the cgr alk gaming compition a little while ago- and was unaware of how kick ass you were. All I saw was tons of people eagerly awaiting your work.- I was skeptical to see if you lived up to the hype and all I have to say is GOOD GOD…

Your modeling is rediculios how spot on it is. - so do you model with edges?- you have to tell us.

#18

Ow MY!? hey KWAK great work as usual, just what I expected out ah ya. love the style in this character, the lil side dude is freakin the hell outa me…

keep up the great work

#19

i get it.
i thought that mr sharp was the tall guy.
anyway great work.

#20

^ me too

I was looking at the big buy thinking “…that is Napoleon?” and didnt even notice the little guy next to him.
