OMG, that’s awesome.
GAC 11: Richard the Lion Heart-Knight
dmonk, ArYeS, Gabe - Thanks for the support guys!
Here’s a bit more - His forearm guards are equiped with articualed lion claws for finishing death blows!

This is INSANE!!
I am really loving this.
I assume your going to make displacment maps for the low res version, but I would love to se renders of the hi poly model. This is turning into front page material.
(Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I am really impressed for such a short time spent.)![]()
dude…someone should give you a speeding ticket
you are doin a great job and its comin along very nice.
maybe you can tell us a bit about the method you are
using to creat those decorations over the shild parts,
and about the shader/render.
thanks
Wow man, very nice…
And at the speed youre going… dont what to think how many different costumes/weapons you could have in 3 months… LOL
Over all, nothing to criticize as far as I see…
PS: how are you rendering it? It almost looks like (from the reflections on the armor) that there is an inside of a house in the reflection
-Keep up the good work, DevilHacker
dmonk - lol - cheers dude!
cgg - lol - nothing special - just maya poly tools. I just picked random materials (as they won’t be used in the end) so just normal blinns and lamberts really.
DevilHacker - Thanks man! We have 3 months to do this?! DOH! The lighting is a random HDRI I found and a single spotlight - nice and fast for previews.
Did a bit more on the forearm guard claw.

Dude…I can’t believe you’re getting such praise for this…you realize that its CHEATING to use pre-existing models from Blizzard and call them your own right? …goddammut… Well, I am theoretically entering this contest, but dammit all, you are really failing to inspire my effort, seeing as I’ll just get trounced in the end by you anyways. Awesome work so far, can’t wait to see it come along to the finish…keep it up man.
ekhulser that post was really confusing ![]()
anyway, great work on the model andrew! i absolutely love what you doing so far…
ekhulser - ha ha - you should totally enter - I doubt I’ll finish my entry, if thats any consolation? - If any of you guys have tried generating normal maps in maya you’ll know the chances of me finishing this project are pretty slim
Ifx3d - Cheers bud!
Well I’m gonna get some sleep now (got to be up in a couple of hours
) then I’m gonna take a break from this project and get on with my uni work.
I’ll pick it up again in a few days
Later!
I don’t think I’ll be able to win either, but it’s still fun to test my skills. Its also more motivation to get new work in my demo reel.
So It’s all good…
Sorry if my previous post was confusing…jokes are hard to get across through typing…
LESS CONFUSING VERSION:
This is damn cool.
Yea, andrewley, I’m entering…I’m going to do Black Beard the pirate…I’m going to try normal mapping too, It’ll be my first try at it, but I figure I should learn it and this 3 month window seems like a good opportunity. Hopefully it turns out as cool as this is starting.
better and better… i love your creativeness.
just out of curiosity what version of maya are you using? i know maya 6 is supposed to have some nice normal mapping stuff… but the only tut i’ve seen for generating normal maps in anything lower than 6 was the one from drone.org ( http://www.drone.org/tutorials/normal_maps.html )
is that the sort of thing you’ll be doing?
forgive me if it is correct, but I am trying to understand why an English King would be brandishing a ‘Fleur de Lis’…
damn, I wish I had those modeling skills…so fast and so good! nice!!
Looks like it will be way too high poly unless you intend on making all of that a normal map??
-KDX-
agreed, fairly unlikely i think
looking amazing so far, except I think the actual lion head part of the armor could use some tweaking, it is definitely not up to par with the rest of what you’ve shown.
meh, I think he’s on the right track.
"In the twelfth century, either King Louis VI or King Louis VII (sources disagree) became the first French monarch to use the fleur-de-lis on his shield. English kings later used the symbol on their coats of arms to emphasize their claims to the throne of France. In the 14th century, the fleur-de-lis was often incorporated into the family insignia that was sewn on the knight’s surcoat, which was worn over their coat of mail, thus the term, “coat of arms.”
wow, i realy like ur work …
How do u model the details in the armor ?
Are they additional objects ? Or are the details extruded from the main mesh ?
Keep it up
this is pretty amazing-
i share Grashupfa questioin. I think i could probably do it, but it would look all jankity and the speed at which you create these details suggestes that you have some cool methods of higher modeling.
