GAC#11 - Pierre Curie - Scientist

#1

Ive chosen Pierre and Marie Curie - the scientists that discovered radium in 1897.
Ive not had much experience modeling muscly characters, so im gonna make this guy HUGE, plus my weak point in the last few comps was the designs, so im thinking long and hard about this fella.

His history states that he was ran over by a horse and carriage, and his wife died of leukimia, but who am i to stick to history…
My idea is that due to a lifetime of handling radioactive material, or perhaps a horrific lab accident has turned him into an 8 foot tall monster that seems like a mix of The toxic avenger and hulk.

Ive had a few ideas on how to go about it, such as:

*Futuristic / mechanical look. Radioactive material has a half life of hundreds of years, so maybe he lived underground rebuilding his body and surfaces in the future to fight for good (this is the lamest of my ideas)

*Victorian style valves, pipes, glass tubes and mechanisms are fused to his mutated body. This could either be as a result of the accident, or some self-afflicted thing used to increase / help mobility or perhaps to make some kind of weapon. He could have a radioactive bio-cannon on his arm. He could also have victorian style steam valves on his chest or back to release heat generated by his body.

*His wife and collegue - Marie curie could be physically fused to his body. This could either be twisted genetics, an accident, or an assimilation (like in AKIRA and “the thing”). She could perhaps be assisting him, and her side has different abilities/ attacks to Pierre’s side. She could be involuntarily melded - trapped, if you will - to him, and has kept her human mind, unlike the beserk pierre. This would create conflicts within the character and affect his fighting style - much like Dizzy’s good and bad side in Guilty Gear X.

I was influenced by the Over the top 2d fighting game heavyweights like Zangief (street fighter) and Potemkin (guilty gear X)
If you can, i highly reccomend buying Guilty Gear XX Reloaded or Guilty Gear Isuka - it may not be as playable as Street fighter Alpha 3 (the best 2d beater ever in my opinion) but the sprites are HUGE, very hi-res and sublimely animated. Its as close as youll get to ‘playing’ an anime.

Ill probably just gather ideas and inspiration, and start modeling around, or after christmas.

You’re insane. This is wicked lol, should be fun.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie is polish. Don’t mess her up

#3

Awesome…just…awesome.

-K.

#4

I like this one the best, sounds very cool! It would be interesting to see what your crazy skills can do with the mutation between the two characters

#5

Finally started it!
spent about 3 hours knocking this up:

Its only a rough-out so i can guage the proportions, as well as see how to approach the mesh flow. Ive not really done much musclular modeling, so i need to tread carefully. The hands are nicked from a previous character and fattened up. Its taking shape now - im quite pleased with the OTT zangief / potemkin (see reference on 1st post) style proportions and i can now mess around with the mutation / mechanical ideas. Im completeley clueless as to how im gonna approach the face, textures and clothes on him.
Ill just keep adding to it as i go. 3 months is a long time…

Nice mock up so far. This should be ineresting, 3 months is a very Long time.

update:

Ive refined the geometry, but its still nowhere near completion. Id like to get stylised muscles with sharp edges and emphasised bone structure - like in the capcom drawings. I experimented (using a previous character of mine) with the marie curie melding idea.
Im not too keen on it at the moment - if i proceed with it, it would make a great asymmetrical design and would look pretty gruesome and resident evil-ish, but thats probably too scary, which of course makes life much harder. The capcom sketches for streetfighter, darkstalkers etc are vibrant, stylised, simplified and dynamic so making it look too realistic or gruesome will ruin the look.

If there are any glaring anatomy errors (except the stylised proportions) feel free to point them out.

As i said earlier - its still a very early idea and is still in development.

looking good Andy. I don’t really get into the ‘fused curies’ thing (sound like part of the preparation for a vindaloo when you phrase it like that), but maybe she could ride on his shoulders (possibly controlling him with levers, or swinging something around for extra attacking power). I definitely think there’s merit in keeping the team together though.

keep it coming. can’t wait to see how this one comes together.

cheers

BTW: Where’d you find those gifs? They’re awesome!

I like it, like all of Your works. What have You done with Marry?? Do You have any concept or like me You are making from the head?? Only one crit I have is that he have too flat face (LOL). Joke, make him more muscles on venter/stomach(I don’t know which is correct, in my dictionary was too many words).
Best

Hey Andy,
Nice work so far… I agree that if you go the way of melding both characters together it will make your life a lot harder, but than again, you have a few months and I can’t think of anyone more qualified to take of a zombie like character than you. Also, if you do go the rout of melding both characters together, than IMO Marry should be melded to his back, so that when he is facing one direction, she always sees what’s behind him, giving him like a 6th since to see behind him and block/counter attacks from behind.
Keep up the good work!

Just like Quirrel and Voldemort

Nice work so far. A bit odd, but nice.

#12

I always play the big wrestler types in fighting games, and potemkin from guilty gear is possibly the best fighting game character design I’ve ever seen…heck anyone from Guilty Gear is magnificent…

anyway, good work so far I can’t wait…

Love the idea, although like you said it might be bit too gruesome if the two were fused together. I like the big brute idea however.

You know maybe Marie Curie could stand on the sideline and control the big brute with a control stick or something, like some characters would have extra charaters that stand in the back of the screen and follow the player, for example Donovan with the little girl from Darkstalkers or the Crow/girl from Testament from Guilty Gear X2, there are a few others but I don’t really now their names. Anyway, just a thought.

As for your progress right now I like the look of it although I’m thinking that his neck might be a bit thicker which will pobably also make it look shorter. Also I think you could also beef up the shoulders and lower arms a bit more. His entire uppertorso shoulder area looks like it could use a bit more weight or mass to it right now it sort of feels a bit unbalanced if you know what I mean :D… Although of course it always comes down to personal taste.

Can’t wait to see some more updates!!!

Oh, and for the record, I love the Guilty Gear series.

Absolutely awesome work!!! I like the design! The idea of the mutated Marie is very very nice. However I am not sure about Piere’s back anatomy:
The Latissimus Dorsi seems much too big. And u definitely need a Sacrospinalis!
Good Luck

Andy H I’ve got Guilty Gear X2. It is one of the best fighters out there, Graphically the best you could get, though it’s way to easy to play, sadly . Kof is the most playable in my opinion, Street Fighter Alpha 3 also takes the cake for me, really excellent character design and playability.

very good idea of concept, though I don’t like the mutated idea much. I think you should go with a really classy look of the chick and go for mean mechanical brut, but please don’t make them molded together and also think reanimated like Frankenstein for Pierre, plz don’t make this a hulking zombie…

any way great work and I’ll be watching for updates… :buttrock:

Cheers folks.
Hanzo - i feel the same way - Guilty gear looks amazing and has excellent character design and animation, but my all time favourite 2d beat em up is street fighter alpha 3 for its mechanics, presentation, choice of characters and playability. Samurai showdown 4 is pretty excellent too.

Im at a loose end here, and all of your comments are really helping. I love the style of the rival schools characters - really chunky, clean and over the top. Id love to go for that, but i feel that i will be marked down or considered unskilled unless i do a super realistic texture job on him and make him all moldy and hideous. The radiation / melding aspect is gonna be a tough issue to resolve if im going for this look. I do like the idea of marie sitting on his shoulder controlling him - it seems more ‘capcom’ but i like the potential of a merging on the game design - she could have different moves to pierre or maybe she can cause conflict between the 2 sides.
I wish i wouldve picked someone simpler that i have more knowledge of, such as laurel and hardy or the 3 stooges… I still might!

This is such a fantastic idea. I love the way she is fused into his chest. I wouldn’t change that for any reason. Further levels of assymetry will give the character a real feeling of corruption and pain. I’m thinking elephant man stuff. Disproportionate length and girth in limbs, massive bone protrusions, large swelling welts. Perhaps machinery fused to the flesh.

#18

If you go down that road, you’ll have to pit them against my Rodney Dangerfield in “No Respect!”

Meantime, I don’t think you need to change direction here. You’ve got a really neat concept rolling here. It’d be a shame to give up on it. I say stop thinking and keep modelling.

Cheers

hey andy - looking very cool so far! if you are still searching for ideas:

perhaps marie could be riding him, instead of controlling from the sidelines? Pierre is looking like he is a sort of permanent Dr. Jekyll, and it’d be cool if Marie basically strapped a steampunk saddle to his back, stuffed a bit in his mouth, and used him as some kind of bipedal, radioactive warhorse. Pierre’s outfit would have to support Marie’s piloting apparatus - he’d be wearing basically a huge harness, and have all these reins and stuff so Marie can pilot him appropriately?

God that would be a pain to animate!!

#20

ooh! i like that a lot. ya gotta try it andy!
