WIP THREAD:here…

DESCRIPTION:
My main intention was to do something fairly different and to stand out. My initial feel for the challenge was to make the shot really cinematic and have an almost film quality to the final piece, again going against the dark and stormy atmosphere normally associated with tornados. I chose to do a waterspout with the hope not many other people would consider going down that avenue. I built all the assets for this challenge using 3D studio max, with pflow for particle effects and some simulations. The spires, cranes, ropes, barrels, boats, secondary buildings and most of the debris on the rig was hand animated to complete the final effect. Volumetrics were done with After burn, FumeFx and all rendered in Vray.

My primary focus was simply to make a dramatic and believable shot of a tornado. The background was a still image taken by Marie Smith. She graciously allowed me to use it for this project. Everything seen here was done in Maya using primarily maya fluids and particle sprites with custom expressions to get the appropriate motion. Compositing was done in After Effects. The LSD Group (www.lsdgroup.com) generously provided me with machine time for the project. Everything except the sprites were rendered in mental ray.

I highly recommend viewing the HD version over the youtube mirror.

The life footage was made with a Sony F828 camera on a rainy day.
The 3D was made in Maya 6.5 unlimited.
For compositing I used combustion 3.
The resolution is 640 x 400.
Time for creation is almost impossible to say as I did so many stuff side by side over the last weeks.

Self criticism: Tracing the awful quality footage was a horror. Next time, I use better q. with higher res. I traced with Maya Life, btw. First time I used this and not to bad.
I also don’t like the fluids. They have some nice results in between but break out to often into awful shapes. Next time I will use them only for subtle areal ground-dust. Time-management lol - nothing more to say but from 1500 frames (including the main area without trees to get a good view on the approaching tornado) only the first 550 rendered in time. So it was a little bit of a hack to get the already prepared sequences (like the car) into the time frame to get a useful final at the deadline.
I’m still happy so far. Beside learning to use maya life, the completly expression controlled tornado reminded me of some long forgotten behavors.

Being my first FXWars challenge, I was really just looking to complete it on time, and get some feed back. This project, like most, was a huge learning expierence for me, and I throughly enjoyed every minute of creating it (well, except for the 80 hour render time on the tornado). I hope you guys enjoy it, and I can’t wait for the next challenge.

Discription:
As stated in my WIP thread, my laptop with all my work on it was stolen and this is all that i have left of this project unfortunatly. This was a test render I did at low resolution. Its all I have to show for so I figured I’d submit it.
The idea for this was to go with something unique. Everyone else was doing life sized real tornados so I figured I’d try to make a smaller tornado devistating a small toy farm set. My intentio was to get it in some live footage in a living room but my plans when down hill with that theft. Anyway here it is!

DESCRIPTION:
Description: I wanted mine to be an integration of live action and cg. I used Maya fluid fx for the cloud base, the funnel and the foreground debris. the ground cloud was used as a force to drive the dust particles. Had to rerender three times. First time was a really bad composition, so picked a new background plate. Second time, I messed something up, third time, it finally came out decent. If I had more time, would animate destruction of the buildings and lots of debris stuff, but alas…

To me its Dan Chamberlin. Well executed overall.
Others are nice though, as already said above

Great work.

Was fun to watch them all. Great work!

My vote goes to Jonathan Freisler. I like how it affected the surrounding water and rig. It really sucked. (in a good way) Cool!
