Howdy!

If time etc permits, im going to do tornado fx with camera projection techniques and sprites.

Been working on a simple system in maya which shades the hw particles. It takes normal from a curve or surface with closestPointOnCurve or Mesh, and with dot product you can calculate the keylight. Red channel is hilight, green is matte or maybe some texture channel, blue is shadow.

Dont plan to do closeup because i think it could be time consuming to get decent look with sprites. Or maybe not if i recall correctly the tornado from Twister was done with sprites, but oh well...

This is the main reference for me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upnIBFvhdlM . Aiming for the look what is shot inside from a moving car. It would be nice to add some buildings what are being torn down but lets first see how the environment turns out, its not cool having a too much stuff on the plate and not finishing the meal.

Cool, good luck!

nice, I want to see who is the best.
good luck, FX rules.

I will do matte painting of a field and project it on the geometry to achieve nice parallax scroll. Then add tornado and additional clouds and lightning. So called Real Life Syndrome eats my time.

Been watching Twister, its amazing how they did the fx very very well.

Fooling around with PainFx. Converted to polygons and instanced around, works ok with mblur etc. Now doing the road. The animation is not yet locked except for the general idea.

inital setup of the field, very boring and stale. hopefully motion blur is my friend. its only a beauty render straight out from maya, it has to be divided into different layers and few different passes.

ill insert few sprite trees and check the distance is enough. i think there are some scale issues etc but i trust that the right camera motion and mblur will correct that. and of course the sky has to be there…

i probably should have resorted using more photos but ill trust in the miracle of compositing happening. or disaster…

Here’s a blatant ripoff - this is the idea im thinking of - the twister is in the horizon…

i applied a capture from the movie Twister to my sketch plate and tweaked it a bit. i think it can work, if the animation holds up, and if there is enough blur involved.

of course im think about bit different setting though, but this is the general idea.

(i dont know how legal it is to post this pic, so mods feel free to delete it)

Cool stuff!! I agree that the vfx on ‘Twister’ were really very good for ‘those old days’! Great to see you’re recycling some of that ‘greatness’ for this concept-art picture you posted. It’s interesting to see the form of it: this one really has a very long, sweepy ‘tube’!

Also very nice to see how you played around with Paintfx: looks great! I’m really looking forward for more

Allright, the grass seems to work ok, rendering is quite fast with mental ray rasterizer and 2d mblur. Here’s a slight test with lousy compression. The background is temporary. So, time to work with the stormy sky and proper background.

It aint’t exactly stormy now
