FXWars! TORNADO Sandro, F3, FREEFORM

Hi all,

First entry to CG Challenges and second post. I have been thinking about doing this Tornados for a while but never find the drive to finish a realistic one (I have started a few before) I have done one in production for Storm Hawks… the trailer one (lemme know if anyone wants to see it and I will post it).

Well … on to the challenge… Not sure at what stage to post stuff but I am interested in seeing if I can use the plate for the moving plants…

I chose one of the images provided and cleaned it up and made it stormy. I also painted some extra sky in case I want to pan up. I liked the houses so I can try destroying them but that tree was on the way so i removed it to add a CG one (hopefully)

I also animated the tornado the way I want it to move over 500 frames (unfortunatelly I may have to make it shorter due to render times). I am thinking 10 seconds would be a good duration (240).

My idea is to have the handheld feeling and pan the camera up as the tornado gets close. Possibly break the camera at the end but not so sure about that since it’s been done many times… I want to add rain as well…

Well … that’s it for now.

Cheers,
Sandro

Sounds like it will be pretty cool.

What are you using to make the final tornado? Also what did you use in that screenshot?

Thanks… After checking the other candidates I feel it’s actually a pretty simple one.

I am using Maya Particles running on a diplaced cone with clusters and offset. Using a lot of expressions to control ascent rate and rotation based mainly on UV values of the surface.

I’d rather keep it simple on my first attempt. Using Maya and Photoshop.

Not sure how I will be doing the plants yet… And indenting ground (making a hole)/ripping the trees/etc…

Feeling my composition seems weak … I may work on that more as well.
If someone was actually filming, they would be following the tornado around not keeping the camera steady in the middle. but for that I may need a lot more matte painting
