FXWars! TORNADO Jono, F3, FREEFORM

#35

i know it would be quicker, but i wont get light bounces, colour bleeding. and basically, vray looks better. unless i spent a week setting it up too fake it, its not going to happen.

http://graphics.pixar.com/IrradianceAtlas/paper.pdf

also vray works well with fume and ab, they recieve vray GI and stuff.

if i dont get the noise reduced im going to have to try and fake it :S

#36

What rig are you running with, and what are your vray settings (GI-wise), because while vRay is way better than max scanline, you should, by no means, be clocking 11 hours per frame. I cut off any renders of mine if they take more than 20 min a frame.

#37

whoh, no, not 11 hours per frame, 11 hours ALL UP for 250 frames. thats like, 4 mins per frame. im not a complete idiot lol.

#38

Oh, rofl, must’ve read that wrong. 4 minutes is solid.

#39

If you need realistic ocean splashes, find someone with Krakatoa/Pflow and use the method I came up with here…

Hey John,

I see you have your own thread for ‘your’ tornado - but you keep posting your work in other people’s threads?

I can understand your enthusiasm on this challenge, but you should probably keep your pics to your own thread…

#42

I´m sorry about that, this is the first time I participate on a challenge so I didn´t know what to do or how, I see now why people is writting me to stop Spamming etc…, I feel kinda dumb now!

Sorry again.

Thanks

JP

okidoke!

WOW did my post turn into a big rage fest lol. Anywho…

so i dont have anyhtign to show, kind of screwed with lack of time. Its not looking bad, but even if i had another week could make it better. Ill be comping over the weekend, and trying to fix it up, but just wanted to wish everyone good luck!!! very cool challenge, its just a pitty that work always seems to get hectic when other things are due lol ><

im sure you all know how it goes.

thanks for the support guys!

#44

Ok, so i think ive managed to comp my way out of this one, still rendering a few thigns. But all should be good.

Things i learnt from tornado FXWARS:

  • If your doing a tornado, drop the camera to ground level to hide the contact with the ground (i didnt do that)
  • Dont do tornados over water (yeh i did that)
  • Fume takes long to simulate, but not long to render
  • AB doesnt take long to set up, but takes AGES to render
  • People wont notice half the things i hand aniamted at all… ALL
  • Darker scenes to hide problems (didnt do)
  • People tend to think tornados dont loook right unless you ‘hollywood’ them up
  • Tornados should form in space, or in white rooms (wish i did)

#45

The still image looks really nice, can’t wait to see the final animation.

The textures on the oil rig are inspiring.

If people don’t notice the things you hand animated, you did it correctly. Its the subtle things that you don’t notice if they are there, but if they are missing, someone will quickly point them out

Okidoke,

Im not sure of the uploading process (i do remember reading it somewhere) and not sure how the submission works, so here it all is.

I finished it yesterday, but ive been uploading, finding hosting, then deleting, then converting all day, and time zones dont help.
Then i was hoping roberto would make a voting thread or somehting…

Anyway, lets get into it!

Wow, I like the sparks from the live wires and the Tornado has a lot of power in it in the last half of the vid, the top of the colomn really has a sense of rising turbulence. The damage on the side facing the cam after the Tornado hits is great, I suspect thats where you hand animated pipes and other fittings. This must have been a very difficult effect even if you know how its all put together, you modelled all this in the first week and spent the rest (time allowing) doing the effect, others seem to have had the same production curve.Great job, good luck in the vote.

#48

Post your final piece here:
FXWARS TORNADO! Post you Final Entry )

This is incedible work…
Good luck in the voting!

thanks dogbreath!

I didn’t even realize anyone would even notice the flickering sparks in the hole that the tornado leaves! Nice spot! (it is hand to see)

Yeah, that whole wall (bar a few bits that fall into the water) were all animated with bones, my scene has about 300 odd bones that I’ve used to animate things and break bits. Noise rotation and position controllers help a lot with adding secondary motion fast.

WTF,

"Your video ‘CGTalk FXWARS - Tornado F2 (1598890)’ has been removed from Vimeo because it violates our policies.

Vimeo does not allow porn, commercial videos, gaming videos, videos that incite hatred, or videos that you did not make yourself (“I have permission from the creator” does not count as making it)"

Youtube mirror will have to do untill i sort this out.

Try Veoh seems to be a good place to post, there alot of cg tutorials being put on there from the community.

Vimeo link back up, they thought it was some game intro or somehting ha ha.

guess i should take it as a compliment :curious:

okidoke,

i’m not sure if anyone will check this, probably not… but…

SO during this challenge i had a few small hurdles i came across and asked for peoples options on which is the best way to do it all.

Those main two things were:
Animating cables - whats the best way, cloth, flex, bone chains?
Splashes - quick and dirty way.

I don’t currently have much time to put together any form of detailed video, but i did string together a few preview videos that i’m currently loading to youtube (sorry you vimeo fans, but i was the only one who uploaded my tornado to vimeo, so be happy about that!). There not anything special, but they do (try) to show how i addressed both of hurdles mentioned above. Don’t expect a tutorial, its simply a 20 second clip, trying to show what the go was and how effective (well i think they were) that method was.

Wow, youtube quality is beyond horrible! Will upload some vimeo’s soon!

Ill be most happy to explain whats going on if anyone wants, im nto even sure if anyones going to watch them!

enjoy

i’ve checked it! And there is a lot more detail in your clip compared to the other entries. Thats one big reason for me why I voted for your entry.
