FXWars! Tornado Dragons0088, F2, FREEFORM

#1

Hey guys. I’ve just recently started to activelyt participate in the CG Society forums. I recently did the Animals in Repose workshop in the anatomy thread. Doing so I realized how invaluable it is to actualyl participate. I learned a ton and did something I’m proud of for my first Zbrush piece.

I am going to school for VFX and Motion graphics so this should be right up my alley. I’m eager to get my hands dirty with the 3DS Max PFlow system. I know next to nothing about it but i think that would be the best way to go about making an effect such as this. I might be mistaken though… Anyway if anyone knows of any good pflow tutorials they could share it would be greatly appreciated.

I will rent out an HD camera from my school and shot a couple plates of Denver, Colorado (where my school is located) and hopefully I will put a tornado in there. Not sure how practical it is to have a tornado in the middle of a city but I figure i could get some expience composting and blowing out windows and throwing cars around while im at it. This might be a bit to ambitious of me considering my expience level.

Best of luck to you all, I’m eager to see all of your entries!

P.S. Im unfirmiliar of what TRIBUTE, FREEFORM, FORENSIC means but I figure mine will be freeform?

Hey, no replies but i have decided to change my project completely. I figure since everyone else is doing large life sized tornados causeing destruction and stuff how about if I make a tornado that is 2 foot tall terrorizing a house or cat. Would this be allowed? Tell me what you think.

Hey guys,

Here is a little update. I’ve decided to go with the small tornado scenario. I’m going to have a tornado terroize a small plastic barnyard set of toys. I’ve begun work on the barn yard have a look and tell me what you think. I think ill have all the piece move as one thing much like a toy would (not have tiles or planks peel off). The plastic animals and pumkins will blow away though. I’ll work on shooting a plate of the my living room and I will work on camera matching after that. I still need to finish the handle of the barn and some interior things and also add a few more farm land creatures. Have a look and tell me what you think

lol cool mate! This looks like a fun piece! Poor sheep! :’(

Hey! Nice modelling and very original idea! I like it! I’m curious what it will look like: will you film the footage as if you’re making a ‘homevideo’ of this event? I’m really looking forward to updates! All the best!

Thanks for the replies guys!

To tell you the truth I’m not sure what kind of camera movement i want. I really need to figure that out before i rent the camera out. I was thinking about doing a handheld shot like you said Dutchman and I was also thinking about doing it kinda of like a movie or commercial or something.
If you’ve seen Night at the Museum there is a shot in there where the two small guys are letting air out of a tire and when its zoomed in on them its all loud and chaotic but then when the camera is zoomed out its just a calm peaceful picture pretty much. I was thinking about doing something like that but I’m not sure what would have the best effect.
Tell me what you think!

P.S. I had no clue what i was getting myself into as far as particles go. I have no idea what to do lol. Anyone have any tutorials for Pflow? I figure Pflow should be the route i go down?

Hello Dragons0088, I think this is a really nice idea, though I think you should keep it all withing toy land instead of a real life footage… any how thats just a personal opinion keep going this is the most original and fun idea.

Here is my post please let me know what do you think

Thanks for the input guys! Unfortunatley my laptop got stolen which had my project file on it and all i have as proof of my tornado is this test render I did. I’m not very happy with the test render as this is my first test render with the tornado in it. I set the target camera to a dummy with noise applied to it and i realize that i should’ve applied it to the target too. Also the composition isnt as i expect, i wanted the horizon toward the lower third of the frame. And there are visible lines in the tornado from the vortex i applied. Either way… here it is lol. Forgive the poor resolution, i rendered really small and it stlil took 9 hours or so!
