FXWars! TORNADO Cryptite/PixelMagic, F3 ,FREEFORM

Looks like Pixel and I are gonna put our heads and requisitely different skillsets together to see if we can’t make ourselves a swirly thingie. We’ll be posting some WIP’s over the next couple days just as soon as we iron out the details of our shots.

Software to be used: 3ds max 2008, vRay, Fume FX, Afterburn, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop.

First screengrab of our tornado WIP. This culminates about 6 or so hours of tweaking and setup. Some of you may notice the background and ‘general tornado funnel’ match those from Pete Draper’s tornado tutorial; and, indeed I used his tutorial as a start reference. The background plate is the only thing we’re really still using at the moment, just as something to practice lighting on etc. Pixel will be shooting some plates if we can get a cloudy day, so there won’t be any actual remnants from Pete’s tutorial.

HD 720p Version

At any rate, the dust is all Fume, particles are all there, scale seems a little small for our F3; but that'll likely be fixed by the new shot perspective and, when we get it looking good, our AB-powered funnel.

The actual thick particles in the middle will probably be changed around, as our entry should involve some car carnage on the road, so we'll be able to rip some debris of concrete, grass, electrical poles etc.

So, the to-do fix list includes: adding the AB funnel, adding a little thickness to the bottom swirl (probably fixable in comp), fixing some of the uncharacteristic 'wispyness' of the swirly bits, getting plates, and setting up a few more particle systems for upcoming shots.

Yeah, I’m going to try to shoot some plates for this tomorrow. Then we’ll be cookin’.

I’ve done that tutorial myself couple of weeks ago, and for a guy that really never much worked with the max particle system I was pretty happy with myself for finishing the tutorial correctly.

Why are you changing any of the configuration if I may ask? I understand it should fit in with the background plate etc., but your render (with al do respect) looks less good than with the tutorial’s settings.

Well our tornado will be larger than the one in Pete’s, for one thing. Two, that’s just the first WIP. The configuration’s changed because our tornado is likely gonna be pulling debris from random things, rather than kicking up clods of dirt, like in Pete’s tornado. As well, since this is just the first test of the tornado, we haven’t included our AB funnel, haven’t performed any comp on ‘thickening’ the dust, and i haven’t messed with the debris since Pixel hasn’t gotten to shoot any plates. Once he does, and I know where the location of our tornado will be, i’ll be able to rerig it to fit more accurately.
