FXWars! TORNADO, Aikiman, F1, FREEFORM

#1

Hey there,

Im a bit late but I have something on the go. Would like to do a water spout with emphasis on camera movement to add drama to the effect. I dont have any real footage to show as yet only because it has to be compt’d in passes so wont work as a single render. I am beginning the passes as I speak so I can update with some renders very soon.
EDIT…single render attached camera will pan to the right where tornado will form, not seen here. Back plate used with clouds and landform, Mayas oceans also.

Cheers

Hello Aikiman
Nice to see you here
Hope you will finish this challenge before the deadline

Hi guys, special hi to Heavy  thanks for the encouragement, just post up another screen shot. Having problems with my image sequences because I started my sim from -100 and causing minor inconveniences but should have the finished product done before D day, hope you enjoy it.

looks okay…

i think the scale needs a bit of tweaking though, the waves make the scene seem a bit minature.

I like that your trying to show the clouds more… I’d suggest a bit of tweaking to to polish it a bit - the ‘fade’ of your spinning cloud into the background dosen’t blend very convincingly, and the cloud shader itself looks very procedural. It’s also a bit weird that the wall cloud is in the distance - that’s where the tornado should be coming down from…

Yeah I almost agree on everything you said there, the handling of the clouds is a failure, it really needs to be done as one unit rather than trying to break it into separate elemnts. I also needed to slow the particles down as they got further up but I got fed up with the scene and rushed the end of it and tried to do the rest in post.

The only thing I disagree with you is the background plate, from resource material Ive seen there doesnt even need to be stormy clouds for a tornado to form and because this is a freeform entrance, I felt it was okay to have a bit of artistic license and create a bit of drama with such an image so far away from the action itself.

I wouldn’t call the clouds a failure, it’s just not a final iteration, and in my opinion, should definetly be broken up into more than one ‘unit’, it will take several layers of action to accomplish because theres several different things going on in the clouds during a storm.

As far as the anatomy of your scene, it depends on whether it is a tornadic or non-tornadic storm. They are formed by different atmospherics, and a true waterspout won’t have a wall cloud or the other features of a super-cell storm at all.

A tornadic waterspout on the other hand is simply a tornado that has formed over water (pretty rare) and would decend from the wall cloud as this is the zone of updraft in the mesocyclone. So I’d say either cut the wall cloud out, or change the positioning of your funnel…

#9

lol, dude I aint cutting anything out, like I said this is a freeform entry not scientific.

P.S. Thanks for your interest, doesnt look as though many others will get theirs done in time, Im glad I made the deadline… to me that was the achievement.

#11

And that will be noted on your entry…
Good Job.
