This will be my first CG Challenge, and it’s kinda ironic that this idea would be chosen because I’ve kinda been toying around with the idea for a while. I’m going for the tried and true futuristic race. I like that kind moreso because your not hindered as much by historical basis, so you can come up with anything you like. I’m still undecided as to the setting of the hovertrack, whether inside a cityscape (which a few tests in Maya proved alot harder to pull off then expected), or just out in the countryside, maybe an aquatic world. Here is a recent test I did in Maya, just trying different track curvatures. Also it was test to check render time, as the image below used a custom motion blur in Mental Ray. I’m excited.:slight_smile:WIP Thread:

Very hard to judge this since some of the films are so much longer than others. I think it might have been a good idea to have a set time on the movie length.
Great work done by everyone.

destruct007 - just looks the damn coolest, and that counts for a lot in this sort of contest I think.

mustan9 - the most ambitous with his animaton and it was all realistic.

Lightfreeze - I thought was too ‘star wars episode one’ derivative, and animating floating objects is generally a lot easier.

Russta - very good and promising start, but when he crashes, and all that stuff about floating in space really dragged the whole thing out and brought it down at the end. Didn’t make any sense to me, but then neither did the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which is what I thought of as I was watching it.

Yan - Great models and rendering, it’s looked very real, but there really wasn’t anything going on there, just a skid and a quite undramatic crash. I think you needed a bigger idea to show off your skills.

vrom - similar to Yan’s, it was very short and there wan’t really much excitment going on, just a rather tame slide down a bank. Some of the animation was a little awkward as well, but the modeling and rendering were great and I thought you had the best sound effects. You’re the only guy who didn’t go for an annoying thrash metal or techno soundtrack, and just had the sound of the cars, which gets a thumbs up from me.

powerdan - you has some cool iodeas in there, kind of like Wacky Races or something, but I think you were too ambitous for your level of skill and experiecne, so it doesn’t hang together very well. I think yoi might have been better going for an all cell-shaded look.

Oh, and come on you cgtalk browsers - this thread has had 500 views already and only 4 poeple have bothered to vote?
Some of you people are so damn lazy it’s a joke. These guys put a lot of work into this, the least you can do is spend a few minutes voting.

I agree with that %1,000, and to add, I think you guys ( when you do decide to vote ) should view ALL the entries. Don’t base your decision on the opening images you see here. There’s alot of hidden talent, so take the time.

with that said::

Best Composite Work : David Schoneveld (destruct007)

Best Animation : Mathew Foscarini (mustan9) and David Schoneveld (destruct007) both different, but very cool.

Best Editing : Mathew Foscarini (mustan9)

Best Visual Effects: David Schoneveld (destruct007)

Best Overall Entry: David Schoneveld (destruct007) and Yann Goument ( Yan )

About Mr. Schoneveld animation entry, I think the part of the car that’s left behind on the first tree doesn’t look right, I think without it, the animation will still hold true.

Mr. Goument, sorry there’s no texturing and/or lighting cathegory, you would of win that for sure.

GREAT WORK EVERYONE, INDEED!!! I CAN’T IMAGINE HOW MUCH WORK AND TIME WENT INTO THIS ONE.

I would vote if I actually could open some of these! 1 dead link video and the Etheridge(Russta) one I have no clue what to do… Why can there not just be one universal way to display these videos…geesh.

#19

OK fixed the dead links & posted a smaller mirror for Etheridge(Russta)

And for the future in terms of an unified format for the animations,
I am Working on it
Trying to get it working for the NEXT challenge.

Now people ,please continue to vote!

Volker römer (vrom)

–I too was expecting something more spectacular and I am unsure about the unnecessary camera moves. The flying car and backwards slide at the end kinda killed it for me as well; maybe some KF tweaks I liked the environment and the car models themselves.

Mathew Foscarini (mustan9)

–this DID kinda have an Akira feel to it (that’s a compliment). But I did not feel the energy you were trying to project. Very ambitious project; I hope you keep working on it, fine tuning and carrying over the secondary motions and other details that were in the final crash, to the rest of the movie.

David Schoneveld (destruct007)

–love the environment and the car’s interaction with the snow. I agree about the front end kinda falling off at the first tree it hits but I still like your over all scene, motion, and emotion. –great explosion too! -sweet job! you’ve got my vote so far…

Aaron Plath (Quantium) –file removed from uTube?

[b]Daniel Lezama (powerdan)
[b]–kinda fun and very ambitious as well; Even one car going through all that would have been a challenging project. I think I understand that you weren’t going for realism however, working on effects that are even a little closer to real-world effects will help sell this a lot –as would some good sound effects.

[b]Steven Cleland(LightFreeze) (man, that putfile takes forever! The avi link works fine, though)

[b]–unfortunately this does get compared to the pod races so you certainly had your work cut out for you. I think some intense camera shots would have helped, so would have some really good sound effects. I think some spectators, secondary motion and more particles are all necessary to make this more interesting. As it stands, only about 5 seconds of the crash are really interesting. Tweak some keys; things should thump! and smash! and crash! And throw up dust! Before skidding to a stop. I think you’re at a good starting point though, and hope you spend some more time on this –it has huge potential and could really turn out sweet.

[b]Yann Goument (Yan)

–well I thought the cars coming down the track was kinda intense but the wreck didn’t do it for me –too gentle; man, that thing could have made it to row 5 at least! (why does THE RACE always end in THE WRECK anyhow?). I agree with others; killer models, rendering, textures.

To be honest though, your unwarranted use of profanity without warning killed it –sorry, but you’ll not be getting any vote from me.

[b]Russell Etheridge (Russta) (114 MB! Are you kidding me!!!? –tell you what, if it downloads by the time I’m done with this, I’ll check it out
)

–say what? -liked the intro but sure missed the sound effects. You had something good going in the first 30-40 seconds. You actually seemed to be telling a story about THE RACE (kudos)! You had nice cars, and open road, nice set –I mean, there were all sorts of possibilities, but then THE RACE became THE HATCH and I was sad.

I liked the secondary motion of the cars and the drivers. Since the blowout seems to be a pivotal moment, spending some more camera time on that wouldn’t hurt either. And nothing personal -I do apologize if i just don’t ‘get’ your vision, but if you ever felt like just rolling credits at 0:00:38, it would be fine by me…
