FXWARS: THE RACE!: Alan Au

#1

Hi everyone:
I hope the forum will support me enough motivation to finish this project. I have modelled a few hondas in max 5 and 6. I will be rigging, animating, texturing in maya with mental ray to render.

The story will be a street race simular to Initial D. lots of sideways drift action. I just watched the HK movie with Jay Chou and Anthony Wong, and all 24 episodes of Fouthth stage. I must say I am atleast a bit inspired
The “Crash” will be a surprise near the end. I won’t unveil it just yet, but let’s just say for now that it’s a homeage to the 80’s. :wip:

A basic tunnel environment I have made. The textures are normal mapped. I designed this for animation and quick render times so I painted the lighting and shadows in photoshop. No shadow/light calculations = 50 second render time only needing antialiasing and slight glow for the florecent cylnders. The playblast also looks awesome because it has shadows and lights in the viewport!!! :bounce:

Main Car #1: Honda NSX

My first car with interior. 120,000 polys with 1 ilteration meshsmooth including the interior. Once again the goal is to keep things light and animatable. This was rendered in brazil r/s.

Placeholder for Main Car # 2: A Secret :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s a not a honda. It’s not Japanese. It’s not from this world.

Background Car #1: Honda DC2 Integra Xtreme/C-West

My second car. No interior and recycled parts (rims, brakes, exhaust) but it’s a background car so whatever!

More Renders: They are so big you can see all the corners I cut!

Two more background cars! They are siblings under from mother honda. RICE VS JDM!

Background car #2: Honda EG6 Civic Black Widow 2

99,000 polys. I am missing taillights though, so perhaps you will only see the front of this car or I could get off my lazy butt and model them. More recycled parts awesomeage!

Background car #3: Honda EK9 Civic JDM SPOON!

JDM goodness. No fast and furious body kit here. I have made several versions of this car: USDM civic DX, JDM Type-R. Spoon, HKS turbo. I would like to create a mugen version as well.

I do not have brazil for max 6 so no goodie carpaint (as I refuse to wait for the slow raytrace of scanline renders) I still have GI skylight thou!

You’re certainly off to a flying start, will watch to see how it progresses! :buttrock:

#4

Very nice cars! The first one is very cool.

Can you give me some tips on how you did the car paint?

Thanks,

#5

Neon lights!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

#6

Tibes: You’re flying race looks more complete than mine. A worthy advisary’s progress I will also need to watch. :stuck_out_tongue:

Mustan9: I used Brazil Rendering System’s carpaint material. I tweaked the settings only a little bit off the defaults and I had Global Illuminations turned on.

I will be using mental ray and it’s carpaint material for the animation renders though.

#7

oh… what car paint shader for MR are you using? Are you using Maya?

#8

you have good modeling texturing and lighting, but will the fx be as good? Nice work so far, you’ve got some great looking stuff, have you animated any of it yet?

#9

oh my god that looks AMAZING!!!

#10

Not bad! You just have all those models sitting around already? They look nice, esp. the tunnel. Curious to see the crash part.

BTW, you have licenses of Max, Maya, and Brazil at your school? I’m jealous! So many toys to play with! At my college, we had a couple licenses of Max and Lightwave, and it was hard to get into the lab to play with them.

Sorry for the slow reply by today was a hectic day. My instructors, fellow students and I were at the local pub getting drunk and celebrating the coming of summer break from 2pm-7pm. I am still a little tipsy as I write this. :bounce:

SOE digital: once again it’s rice vs jdm. I think neon lights is a major requirement for rice. :deal:

mustan9: The car shader I speak of is called mi_car_paint_phen and I access it in the Hypershade window. Under the create tab I change from create Maya nodes to create mental ray nodes and it is available under materials.

destuct007: I honestly do not know how well this will turn out. I am learning as I go. Although I have much experience with modelling, painting and lights, I must admit I have little practice in animation and simulation. But I hope to gain much experience from this challenge [and future ones too!] :buttrock:

Lman: Thanks, and my self esteem is greatful for you :bounce:

Bonedaddy: To answer your questions, yes, I do have a lot of stuff sitting arround. Aside from a studying cg, I also love cars. I combined my two passions and taught myself how to model cars in max 5 and 6. My modelling speed just about doubled each project and I have built up a small collection in the process.

  • The nsx was done in a 2 months and I made the interior in another 2 months
  • The integra was next, taking just under one month but I reused stuff from the nsx
  • The eg6 civic was third, taking two weeks and I reused stuff again.
  • The ek9 civic was the final car I made in max. I made 4 versions with different parts in about 4 weeks time but did not recyle anyparts except for wipers
  • I have a 5th secret car that I made when I learned to model in maya. I will unveil it in the darkess hour.
  • The tunnel was an UV unwrapping/texture painting assignment for my maya class at college. We were given a hallway model with the option to add geometry. I did like it so I opted to model my own. I also wanted an environment for my cars so I got two birds stoned.

Thanks for the comments and especially on the tunnel

My highschool used max 5 and 6 while I was there. We had the trial ver. of brazil installed there but for the early full sized renders I had done on a full license.

I am attending college now and we use maya 7 and mental ray. We use g4 laptops [yeah I know, it’s stupid] so I am able to work where ever I wish.

Next year we are receiving Zbrush, max8, combustion and additional maya training. For hardware we will get upgraded Boxx duo core laptops and wacom 17" cintiq lcd tablets.

The best part is that tuition for locals is only $4,500 CND/yr!

I only said that b/c you have great looking stuff, I’m sure it will get good reviews here already based on how good it looks modeled, textured and light! I already know your textures will be/are much better than mine!

#13

Woah been long for an update. I got a lot of final projects due for college so time is sparse. Stupid web and video stuff. I don’t even know why I took these things. :banghead: Oh well, next year it’s pure 3D!!! :deal: :buttrock:

Thanks for the kind words man. Yea modelling, materials and lights I have no problem with. Even my rigging is a lot stronger than my animation skills. I need to practice more. Well I got my ek9 Civic type R rigging, and it’s time to crash it into a few walls. Funny thing is, this is also an assignment for one of my classes. Buhahah recycling is awesome! :bounce:

And here’s a quick render of the type R with mental ray carpaint and an oclusion overlay. :applause:

And yeah I know… no headlights.

First off I must say that these cars are amazing…there reallly awsome…. I have a big, important question to ask you though, as i am from manitoba as well. How is the Red River course? Maybe some positives and negatives? I’ve just heard about the new animation courses that recently started and I’m interested in them, right now i’m a Grade 11 student trying to learn this stuff on my own and i really like it. It would be such a huge help to me if i had some comments from a student taking the course and i would be sooo gratefull:). could i get the exact course name that your taking so i can research some more information on it.

Thank you sooo much for your help! and good luck on the project I’m eager to see the final product
