FxWars! The Ocean : Jignesh Jariwala

HEY good one there  ill follow this one

#3

Nice, rolling motion!

I’d love to see a little more specular on the water’s surface, though, and a little more speckling in the foam.

What’s driving the surface in yours?

Thanks Lolec!!

tharrell :: i m using one displace modifier and one wave modifier to make the big waves…
yeah that foam is temporary.i might use particles, i m not sure yet. this is really hard to do in max without plugins.

#5

Just some R&D test!! man this is really fun and gr8 learning!! but it’s too hard…
i have done the foam geometry setup and it’s shader…will render and composite it combusion.

#6

hi , for the foam you can use the same noise with more saturation i use that and is good

#7

It’s starting to look really, really good! The shape, scale and motion are dead on now.

The foam is flickering a little bit to me… it almost seems like the resolution of your noise might be a little too low.

I’m still wanting to see a few really hot speculars on the water – I think my eye is wanting to see a little more contrast on the surface.

Keep it up!

Yeah i havn’t rendered foam yet.that’s flickering becoz of reflection.(dunno but noise scale is ok). and it would be cover with foams.

well as judging from reference movie i rarely see any specularity in water.it should be dark blueish with little murky reflection.yeah u r right about contrast on surface.i might darken the water surface in composition.
This is just R&D test.i m still confused what kind of fantasy i should add.
i m not going for ship.

#9

One trick is to rendered out foam seperatly so i can control it in compositing.
to render out simple make white foam material and rendered out with opacity map.so we would have foams only on big waves.
so breaking it into seprate passes…there would be lots of foams on big waves.and in rest of oceans there should be smaller foams and some irregular foams.

#10

added the foam .

#11

looks great, what app are you using?

[edit] nvm, I read 3ds max 8 hehehe

#12

:stuck_out_tongue: yeah 3ds max has inbuilt shader that can create foams too…check out this pic…

can anybody guess which shader? :stuck_out_tongue:

EDIT :: it’s mentalray ocean lume shader…anyone has tried this shader? if u use it over displaced surface with little higher steepness it gives pretty nice result only in still image.but when u render it it looks horrible…

#13

The contrast & spec are definitely looking right to my eyes now (in the most recent animation).

You mentioned you created the foam on a separate layer to control in comp? I wonder what an extremely high frequency ripple over a noise effect would look like on it – just to add a little bit of chaos. The color and generation both look great.

Keep it up!

#14

well guys,

i believe making “REALISTIC” stormy ocean in 3ds max(specially making foams).it’s not possible without plugins.(i wish we have cool inbuild fluid system in 3ds max) so i m not gonna do stormy ocean.i tried particles too but they kill my system adn can’t handle lots of particles on 512MB RAM.so i m not gonna do it.

i will think something else and give a try to next month.

Here is the most recent update.in this I positioned the foams little up on the waves.and also decreased the spread of foams.

Have you seen this?
http://www.particlefx.com/animation/intermedia/index.html
the crashing wave was helped with Afterburn, and realflow was used for the water running off the logo, but those are not necissary in the scope of most of this challenge.

#16

Thanks charley for encouraging me!!

yes i have seen that brandon devis site.that’s waht i m gonna do.tidal wave… but with different camera angle.

I m trying to get realstic result since two days and i got the result with wave motion.(not with FFD but with wave modifier ,it’s quiet easy)
but problem, i m getting with material.getting right SSS effect in tidal wave …

I m refering some gettyimages reference clips for “tidal wave”.

here is the test image.

#17

since the wave is taped in only one direction (up) you could try using an animated gradient map rather than SSS

#18

Well i m refering this gettimages footage. plz take a look at it.
http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/47758/821-2.mov
and here is the image.

how can i get the material like that? i m not getting satisfied result with reflection.u can see there fresnel reflection.

and here is the wave test i did.
http://www.myfilehut.com/userfiles/47758/scene.avi (4 MB)

EDIT :: i corrected URL to gettimages reference

#19

here is an update for wave rising…(it’s already rised though)…
I will add foams, mist etc later…right now i m concentrating on only waves motion and camera movement.

plz also check the reference footage in above post.

any suggestions r welcome…

Well I have come to realize that to get the color I want in my water, the important factor is the environment its reflecting especially the sky… since water is actually transparent apart from particles in it giving it more of a tint than an actual color… so what you could do if you like that getty reference so much is take apply an environment map to your water (keep your sky as the visible environment map if you like) and make it a gradient. Then assign the darkest color of the water in the reference as the top color then the lightest then a medium. You should notice that the colors are more grey then actually blue like we think. Maybe this can help!

BTW that is some great motion man apart from the color every thing is splendid! especially the speculars!

Are you still in this my man!?
