Thanks, actually its not about giving up, its about the quantity of work I’ll have to do beside this. :D.
Right now I think I might try to recreate the effects in the scene from “the prestige”. I’ll probably use 2D sparks composited into a 3d environment.
I should be able to get good results with a few light passes and using 2.5d techniques to match the reflections/lighting of animated sparks. I collected a few references and there are a lot of youtube vids to help getting the timing of the sparks right.
I hope to be able to post an update for the end of the week.
I’m really interested in the ones going for a 3d way of generating lightning. Something with particles, particle generated splines or XSI’s ICE could maybe do the trick. I’ve watched some stuff describing how Lsystems works in houdini, and I’d say it is probably be the best way to get something animatable and with predictible parameters in 3d. Whatever the way of doing it, it is quite tricky and a good way to learn.
