FXwars :SuperPowers! Ole Kristian H.H

Hi to all.

I am planing to do something with super strenght as I think that will be the easyest for me to do. Need to start something I can finish.

This is inspirated by things like “The Hulk” where a car hits the Man/monster and the car gets destroyed. Only the car will be CG, rest will be live fotage

Here is a qucik Pre-Viz, to show how it will look like.
Link

A WIP picture of the car:

It almost the same car is I have, thought that will maybe be useful in someway maybe.

Any ideas and inputs would be nice.

A few questions:
-Will it be hard to track when I have a “normal” camera and not a super one (mine is a Canon MV750i)

  • Should I use HDR lighting as I know nothing about rendering?

#2

Nice work so far.

My advice about the lighting is to keep os simple, because hdr rendering might take too long.

looking good (i kinda wanted to do the same thing). and it doesnt matter what kind of camera you have, tracking is just matching the movement. and if your camera moves i can garauntee you that tracking the shot will be the most time consuming part of this project. I would advise you to do a locked shot and perhaps add a bit of wobble in post, or move the camera before the cg element comes into play and then lock it when you need to add the cg, so it will appear to be a moving shot, but in reality the moving part has no cg in it.

#4

I will film all of it at the same time, but to make sure I will have something to show of I will do the CG in this order:

  • The crash, [no tracking just animation and blendshapes.]
  • The driving befor the crash, [tracking and animation]
  • The throw, [animation]

I am also thinking of having a shot form the inside of the car. If I do that, what would be the best:
Film from the inside of a real car or just walk with the camera and add the car in CG? Or something else maybe?

At this stage I am also very open to new shots and camera angles or other ideas. I am also looking for some referense for the shot. There is one clip that remindes a lot of what I am trying to do in the “fantasic four” film, but I am hoping to find other references also.

Thanks for your time

why would you do a fake cg car interior if you have a real identical version of the car that you could film in. that will save you countless hours of work.

#6

You are right, not really sure why I thought 3d would be better. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on my.

Anyway, I bought a tripod for my camera today, so I hope I can do the filming this weeked, but I guess I will be working insted :frowning:

The car model is almost done, just smoothing and shading left do to.

One more camera question:
I Have one normal lens, and one that is a bit wider. Will the wide one cause a lot of problem with paralax or distorsion (not sure of the therm here)

Thanks

Hi again, kind of feels like I am talking with myself here:P

My car is almost done, but my rendering skills are very limited.
I am looking for someone to help me setup a few shaders and some lights. It will be a quite easy task I think, as I only need the car to be rendered. So, if you feel interested and would like to be a part of this and turn my one man team into a two man team, send me a PM.

Thanks

H3ro, you might want to checkout the People Searching for Teams page. There might be someone there with the skills you are looking for.

Good luck, I’m excited to see how this comes along.

Agreed!

I am now finished with the car model. The model is not perfect, but I think it will do for this challenge.

I also found someone to help me out with rendering

Let me know what you guys think:)

Hi, I am going to do the filming today.

I was told to make a HDRI foto of the scene also, and I really need some help. And I kind of need it fast, as I will start filming right after I have picked my brothers motor bike up from an other city ( )

My Camera (hp photosmart) has something called AE metering, what should the settings there be when I take HDRI fotos?
Is it the F number that I should change, or is it the shutter speed?

I have looked at some online tutorials, but could not figure that out, and I also dont have acces to my camera manual.

Thanks in advance if someone knows the answare

Well, now I am done with the filming. I will post it here shortly, just have to edit it togather.
I did also take some photos to use as a HDRI image, but for some reason I cant find them on my camera, so I have to re-take them.

Here is a picture of the location:

And a image of my superb HDRI rig, when you dont have that much money, use what you have:)

Edit 1:
Here is one of the shots for the FXwar, this is the “main” shot, where ther car hits the man. Will this do? Or is there something I have done wrong and would I benefit from filming it again? different angel, different senter of veiw, zooming and so on. This is my first time doing something like this, so I really need some help.

Edit 2:
Thanks a lot to my friend Torstein who is the actor here.

Hey dude,

Couple comments:

[ol]
[li]The HDRI probe probably isn’t going to be super important, given that the day you shot on is very overcast. Just a simple GI Joe-style dome light setup with slightly blue tinted lights would probably do you just as well. You could use your HDRI photos for reflection purposes – or even futz with LDRI set photos to fake their HDRI-ness – but using them for lighting is probably unnecessary.[/li][li]For the car, I would definitely try using photogrammetry techniques to map pictures of a real car onto it. If you actually own that car, bring it on set and take multiple pictures of it from different angles, so it’ll have the correct lighting. Then use something like bodypaint to layer the textures on, and layer on different passes for specular hits, shadows, reflections, etc.[/li][li]Your initial previz was a little wonky in terms of its weight. It looks like you ditched the idea of the actor throwing the car, which is probably a good idea.[/li][li]If at all possible, have something in the scene for the actor to react with – preferably something the same color as the car, to get some color bleed on the actor. Maybe take a shopping cart and tie a cardboard box to the front of it. Do some passes with the cart and without, as a fallback.[/li][/ol]Good luck, dude! I’m looking forward to seeing how it comes together!

hi, thanks alot for the answare. Looks like most people here are just browsing, not taking the time to post.

The reason for me wanting to do the HDRI is that I was told to do so my the man who agreed to help me with the lighting. I have never done any rendering (not even a 3 point light setup) so I basicly have no idea about this one.

I dont think I relly understod what to do in point 2. Im am not that of an experiencd 3d artist (the FXwars might be abit over my head really). But the car I own is the 3 door edition, the model is a 5 door. My car does also have a really boring color, gray.

I know my pre-viz is bad, I am really bad at animating, and the pre-viz was made in a hurry. Never doen any pre-viz befor, so I did not know how good it had to be, mine is like a quick storyboard done by someone which cant draw. (like me)

I will try to do the throw, if I get time. I will do the “car hit person” shoot first.

Point 4 was interesting, I will look into that, thanks. It will give the actor some “reflections of the car”, right? But how should I do it, more info would be great. I am also unsure of if this really will be visible?

I will try to film it all again sometime this week, as next week is holiday:) going to travel to the sea with somefriends and steal my grandparents cabin there. So not much 3d the next week for me.

When I did the filming I did not take any mesurments or anything like that ( the gnomon DVD, which I watched later, said that I really had to to do that to get it right) so back to filming

Thanks again Bonedaddy

Edit:
I would really like to get some feedback on stuff like camera angles and the usfullness of the clip I posted. Should camera be closer to actor, more away, actor less in senter and so on.

Now I am done with all the filming:)
Here is the final fotage that I will be using:
Link to fotage

Here are some pictures, one of my info drawing, and one of my HDRI ball, which turned out to be useless, but luckily I also took a panorama picture.

Should I post the Fotage somewhere else also? Not sure…

Looking good H3ro, and way ahead of schedule too!

My guess is you’ll need it to track those shots though, good luck with that!

#20

Only One and and a half shoot needs tracking. I am going to do some of the shoots without tracking first, but I thought it would be a good idea to film something which needed tracking also. The main goal of this challenge for me is learning, so I will try to do a bit of everything
